There isn’t enough comparable evidence to rank the Ford Edge’s two North American generations by reliability. The first-generation Edge spans 2007–2014 and the second 2015–2024, but those date ranges do not establish which is more dependable. For a used Edge, focus on the specific vehicle: its engine, maintenance and repair records, inspection results, and VIN-specific recall status. Two documented concerns deserve particular attention on certain 2015–2018 models: a rear brake jounce-hose recall and a 2.0L EcoBoost coolant-intrusion condition.
Can the Ford Edge generations be ranked reliably?
Not on the evidence available here. A defensible generation ranking would require comparable reliability data—such as exposure-adjusted failure rates or survey results for both generations. Consumer Reports describes its reliability history as based on subscriber surveys, but accessible information does not provide comparable generation-level scores for the Edge. Complaint totals are not a substitute: they reflect reports, not failure rates, and are affected by how many vehicles are on the road, their age and mileage, and owners’ reporting behavior. NHTSA says it considers complaints alongside other information when assessing possible safety issues and defect trends.
The broad North American generation groupings are useful for organizing a search, not for declaring a winner:
| Generation | Model years | What the available evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| First generation | 2007–2014 | No generation-level reliability ranking is established. Age, mileage, maintenance, condition, and vehicle-specific recall status matter. |
| Second generation | 2015–2024 | No generation-level reliability ranking is established. Specific concerns are documented for certain 2015–2018 vehicles, not for every Edge in those years. |
These groupings describe the North American model-year ranges. They do not imply that all vehicles within a generation share the same engine, condition, repair history, or risk.

What to inspect on a 2015–2018 Ford Edge
Rear brake jounce-hose recall
NHTSA recall 25V544 covers certain 2015–2018 Edge vehicles because a rear brake jounce hose could rupture and leak brake fluid, increasing pedal travel and stopping distance. The recall filing lists 414,717 potentially involved Edge vehicles; that is the population potentially covered, not a count of confirmed hose failures. Recall status and remedy completion are vehicle-specific, so check the VIN rather than assuming a particular model year is or is not affected.
Ford’s recall report, submitted in 2025, said that as of June 9, 2025, it was aware of 64 warranty claims, three field reports, and 16 customer complaints related to rear brake jounce-hose leaks. Those are separate reporting categories, not a verified total of failed hoses. Ford also estimated a 0.12% predicted 10-year/150,000-mile cumulative failure probability for the covered Edge/MKX population based on its investigation at that time. That was a forecast, not an observed owner failure rate; NHTSA’s filing nevertheless documents a recall. For the official filing and scope, see NHTSA recall 25V544.

2.0L EcoBoost coolant-intrusion concern
Ford technical bulletin 19-2208, dated June 26, 2019, describes a condition on some 2015–2018 Edge vehicles equipped with the 2.0L EcoBoost. Low coolant, white exhaust smoke, or rough running may be associated with coolant entering a cylinder; the prescribed repair for qualifying cases may involve a long-block engine assembly. This is a specific engine-and-condition concern, not evidence that every 2.0L Edge—or every Edge from those years—has the problem. Ask about coolant top-ups, overheating, smoke, rough running, engine replacement, and diagnostic or repair records. The bulletin is available from NHTSA’s copy of Ford TSB 19-2208.
How to evaluate a first-generation Edge
A 2007–2014 Edge is now an older used vehicle, so its current condition and documented maintenance are more useful to a buyer than a blanket reliability label. Request service and repair records, compare the vehicle’s mileage with its condition, and have a qualified mechanic inspect it before purchase. NHTSA’s Takata airbag recall spotlight includes 2007–2010 Ford Edge vehicles among the listed vehicles; inclusion does not establish that a particular VIN has an open recall. Check the individual vehicle’s status.

How to check recalls and records before buying
- Get the VIN. Use the vehicle’s VIN, not only its model year or trim.
- Check open recalls. Enter the VIN in NHTSA’s recall lookup. Ask the seller for dealer documentation showing completed recall work.
- For a 2015–2018 Edge, verify recall 25V544. Confirm whether the VIN is covered and whether the required hose inspection, readjustment, or replacement was completed.
- For a 2015–2018 2.0L EcoBoost, review coolant and engine history. Ask about coolant loss, overheating, white exhaust smoke, rough running, relevant diagnosis, and any engine replacement.
- Arrange an independent inspection. Give the mechanic the VIN and the vehicle’s known symptoms and records; ask for findings specific to its engine and condition.
What coolant-loss symptoms can—and cannot—tell you
Low coolant, white exhaust smoke, or rough running on a potentially affected 2.0L EcoBoost warrants qualified diagnosis; symptoms alone do not prove coolant intrusion. A cooling-system pressure tester can help investigate a suspected coolant leak, but a home pressure test cannot certify the engine as healthy or rule out every internal problem. If you are not mechanically experienced, have a qualified technician perform and interpret the test. Ford’s bulletin describes the condition and repair path; NHTSA’s cooling-system guidance explains the role of pressure testing.

The evidence here does not justify labeling an entire Edge generation—or every 2015–2018 example—as one to avoid. Instead, treat an unresolved recall, unexplained coolant loss, white exhaust smoke, rough running, missing maintenance history, or a poor inspection as reasons to pause and investigate that particular vehicle. A documented repair or completed recall is different from an unaddressed concern; verify the paperwork and have the vehicle assessed rather than relying on a model-year list.
