Ford’s planned budget EV is a midsize electric pickup, the first vehicle on its Universal EV platform. The company says assembly is planned to begin at its Louisville Assembly Plant in 2027. Alan Clarke, a former Tesla engineer, leads the California-based team behind the platform; Ford named him vice president of Advanced Development Projects in April 2026. Ford has not announced the pickup’s final name, price, detailed specifications or retail availability.
What Ford has announced
Ford describes its Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform as the basis for a family of smaller, efficient, affordable electric vehicles. The first vehicle it has identified is a fully connected midsize electric pickup, with assembly at Louisville planned to start in 2027. These are company plans, not confirmation that the truck is in production or available to order. Ford’s August 2025 platform announcement and its 2026 update on Louisville production describe the program.
Ford’s affordability pitch is about how the vehicle is engineered and built, rather than a disclosed sticker price. The company says the team treated the vehicle as an integrated system, balancing cost and efficiency across components instead of optimizing each part in isolation. Its account describes simplifying the structure, reducing wiring and changing assembly methods.
Who is leading the project?
Alan Clarke leads Ford’s California-based Advanced Electric Vehicle Development team, which developed the UEV platform. Ford’s April 2026 organizational update named him vice president of Advanced Development Projects and said he would continue leading the team. Clarke previously worked at Tesla, but that history does not establish a Tesla partnership, endorsement or transfer of Tesla technology. Ford’s April 2026 leadership announcement also said Doug Field, then Ford’s chief EV, digital and design officer, planned to leave after a transition over the following month.

Ford’s account of the program’s origin, published in August 2025, says Clarke began the effort with a small, hand-picked group of Ford veterans and external hires in California. Ford characterized the approach as a small-team or “skunkworks” effort, with autonomy before the work moved toward industrialization. The company’s account of the platform quotes Field, who was then leading Ford’s EV organization: “Physics is not proprietary.”
How Ford says it is reducing cost and complexity
Ford’s reported design choices focus on removing material, parts and manufacturing steps. In its 2025 account, the company said the pickup body would have three-quarters fewer body parts, two-thirds fewer welds and half as many fasteners as a traditional pickup body. Ford also said it removed more than 4,000 feet of wiring compared with its first-generation electric SUV. These are Ford’s comparisons, not independently validated measurements. Ford’s 2025 explanation of the UEV engineering approach calls out large structural castings, or “unicasting,” as part of the manufacturing rethink.
In 2026, Ford said the first UEV vehicle would use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells and that its wiring harness would be more than 1,200 metres (4,000 feet) shorter and nearly 10 kilograms (22 pounds) lighter than one of Ford’s first-generation electric vehicles. The company also said it brought high-voltage power-electronics design in-house, drawing on engineers from its acquisition of Auto Motive Power. These are Ford-reported design details, not results from a road test. Ford’s 2026 account of the platform and production plans describes the changes.
What Ford’s efficiency claims do—and do not—show
Ford said in 2025 that it expected the platform’s battery to be up to one-third smaller than competitors’ batteries for a similar range. That is a company projection, not a verified comparison between production vehicles. The cited announcement does not identify specific competitor models, test conditions or a completed vehicle test that would establish the result. Ford’s platform announcement also attributes about 40% of a vehicle’s total cost and upwards of 25% of its total weight to the battery as industry context; the page does not identify an independent study behind those estimates.

Ford’s stated logic is that lower complexity and a more integrated design could make an affordable electric vehicle easier to build. The disclosures cited here do not provide enough final vehicle data to determine how that strategy will affect the pickup’s retail price, range, charging time or performance.

The announced vehicle is not yet a consumer specification sheet. Ford’s cited announcements do not establish a final model name, price, detailed range, charging rate, towing capacity, cargo dimensions or date when customers can order or take delivery. They also do not specify connector details or whether a particular retail home charger will be compatible.

Ford has discussed home charging and bidirectional power in connection with the platform, but the reviewed announcements do not establish the pickup’s final equipment, feature availability or implementation. When Ford releases production specifications, buyers will be able to assess the truck on practical measures such as price, range, charging time and compatibility, passenger and cargo utility, towing, and actual delivery timing.
