Formula E’s GEN4 car is scheduled to debut in the 2026/27 championship. It brings substantially more power, active all-wheel drive and two aerodynamic configurations—but the series’ published figures do not support calling it lighter than GEN3. Formula E lists GEN4’s minimum mass as 950 kg, compared with 856 kg for GEN3, and separately gives a GEN4 figure of 954 kg without a driver.
What changes with Formula E’s GEN4 car?
GEN4 is the next Formula E race-car generation, planned for the 2026/27 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. Its headline changes are higher power, active all-wheel drive, configurable aerodynamics and increased regenerative-braking capability. The figures below come from Formula E’s published GEN4 specifications; they describe official specifications or projections, not independent tests of a final race car.
Power: 450 kW in race mode, 600 kW in ATTACK MODE
Formula E lists GEN4’s maximum race power at 450 kW, rising to 600 kW in ATTACK MODE. The series compares those figures with GEN3 Evo’s 300 kW race power and 350 kW peak output. On that basis, Formula E describes GEN4 as having 50% more race-mode power and 71% more peak output in ATTACK MODE. Formula E’s GEN4 launch announcement sets out the power figures and planned debut.
Active all-wheel drive and two aero configurations
GEN4 adds active all-wheel drive and an active differential. Those systems can help manage how power reaches the wheels and how the car puts its output down; they are meaningful changes to the traction and handling package. The car also has two aerodynamic configurations: a high-downforce setup for qualifying and a low-drag setup for race conditions, according to Formula E’s launch announcement and published specifications.

- A racing car gift project for adults – This Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 E Performance set makes a rewarding gift for adult fans of motorsport who enjoy challenging projects
These features give a plausible basis for expecting different grip and cornering behavior, but they do not establish a measured improvement in agility. “More nimble” is not an official quantified metric, and handling will depend on setup, track and conditions as well as the car’s mass.
Regeneration and usable race energy
Formula E lists up to 700 kW of regenerative braking and up to 55 kWh of usable race energy for GEN4. Regeneration recovers energy under braking; the usable-energy figure describes the amount available for the race. These are separate specifications, not a promise that every braking event will recover energy at the maximum rate or that every race will use the full stated amount. Formula E’s specification page gives both figures.

Is GEN4 lighter than GEN3?
No—not according to the comparable minimum-mass figures Formula E publishes. Its table lists GEN4 at 950 kg minimum mass and GEN3 at 856 kg, so the stated GEN4 minimum is 94 kg higher. The same GEN4 specification page separately reports 954 kg “without driver.” Because the page presents both 950 kg and 954 kg with different labels, they should not be treated as one interchangeable figure or silently reconciled. Neither supports describing GEN4 as lighter than GEN3. Formula E’s GEN4 specifications are the source for both mass statements.
Mass alone does not determine whether a car feels responsive: drivetrain control, tires, aerodynamic load and setup also shape its behavior. But without a published neutral handling measurement, the defensible distinction is clear: GEN4 has new systems that may affect traction and cornering, while the available official comparison shows a higher—not lower—minimum mass.

How fast is GEN4 expected to be?
Formula E lists a top speed above 335 km/h (208 mph) and an approximate 0–100 km/h time of 1.8 seconds. It also projects GEN4 to be an average of 10 seconds faster per lap than GEN3 in qualifying mode. That 10-second figure is an anticipated comparison, not a reported race result. The FIA’s April 2026 report makes a separate distinction: the current GEN4 mule car was reported at least five seconds per lap faster than GEN3 Evo, while the faster manufacturer-developed performance is prospective. The mule-car test result and the series’ qualifying projection are different comparisons and should not be conflated.
