Ford says Escape production began in 2000, but the SUV debuted on North American roads as a 2001 model. Ford also identifies 2013 as the start of the third generation. Its published material does not establish the complete model-year spans for every generation, so a fully verified all-years chart cannot be built from those official sources alone.
Ford Escape timeline: confirmed milestones
| Year | What Ford says |
|---|---|
| 2000 | Ford says Escape production began in 2000. Ford Media Center Mexico, April 2, 2019 |
| 2001 model year | Ford’s historical summary says Escape debuted on North American roads as a 2001 model. Ford Media Center Mexico, April 2, 2019 |
| 2005 | Ford dates the Escape Hybrid launch to 2005 and calls it the “first hybrid SUV.” That characterization is Ford’s, rather than an independently established industry-wide finding. Ford Media Center Mexico, April 2, 2019 |
| 2013 model year | Ford says it introduced the third-generation Escape for model year 2013 and notes styling shared with its global Kuga counterpart. Ford Media Center Mexico, April 2, 2019 |
Why a complete generation-by-generation year chart is not confirmed here
The official Ford material cited above confirms the third-generation introduction, but does not expressly verify the start and end model years for every generation. That means the exact boundaries for generations one, two, and four should not be inferred from the milestone dates alone. A complete chart needs an additional source that explicitly documents those spans, ideally Ford model-year literature or a clearly identified secondary reference.
Production start and model-year debut are different dates: the 2000 production figure does not make the first Escape a 2000 model. Ford places its North American debut in the 2001 model year.
Powertrains and trims depend on the exact model year
Generation labels are a useful starting point, but they do not tell you which engine, hybrid system, trim, or drivetrain a specific Escape had. Ford’s 2025 order guide shows different combinations across Active, PHEV, ST-Line, ST-Line Select, ST-Line Elite, and Platinum configurations. Ford 2025 Escape Order Guide

For the 2026 US model year, Ford’s product page lists plug-in hybrid, hybrid, 1.5L EcoBoost, and 2.0L EcoBoost options; it identifies the plug-in hybrid as front-wheel drive. These are 2026-specific details, not specifications that should be applied to earlier years. Ford 2026 Escape product page
- Check the model year, not just the generation name.
- Confirm trim and powertrain together; similar trims can have different engine and drivetrain combinations.
- Verify FWD or AWD availability for the exact year and configuration before comparing vehicles or parts.
What Ford’s current pages say about Escape availability
Ford’s US product page lists a 2026 Escape, while a separate Ford shopping page describes the Escape as “taking a breather for now” and directs shoppers to other vehicles. Those pages establish what Ford was presenting on its site when checked, not a guarantee of future production, inventory, or continued sales. Confirm current regional availability directly with Ford.
