Formula E’s next car is officially specified to reach 335 km/h (208 mph), but the bigger change is how it makes and uses its speed. GEN4 adds permanent active all-wheel drive, more power and regenerative braking, and up to 55 kWh of race energy. It is scheduled to race in the 2026/27 season, so those figures are specifications—not yet results from championship races.
How fast are Formula E cars?
For the current GEN3 Evo, the FIA says the car can accelerate from 0–60 mph in 1.82 seconds, or 0–100 km/h in 1.86 seconds, and reach a top speed of 200 mph. The FIA described it at launch as the quickest-accelerating FIA single-seater; that is an attributed launch claim, not an independent comparison across every racing category. GEN3 Evo uses all-wheel drive only in selected phases, including qualifying duels, race starts and Attack Mode—not continuously throughout a race. FIA’s GEN3 Evo announcement.
Are Formula E cars faster than they used to be?
Formula E’s published generation specifications show a rising top-speed figure alongside changes in energy recovery and drivetrain layout. The figures below are official specifications, not a controlled lap-time comparison on the same circuit, with identical conditions and tires. Top speed alone cannot establish race pace or how competitive a car is.
| Generation | Published top speed | Technical distinction |
|---|---|---|
| GEN1 | 225 km/h (140 mph) | Rear-wheel drive; about 15% energy recovery |
| GEN2 | 280 km/h (174 mph) | Rear-wheel drive; about 25% energy recovery |
| GEN3 | 320 km/h (200 mph) | Front and rear powertrain; over 40% energy recovery |
| GEN4 | 335 km/h (208 mph) | Front and rear powertrain, permanent active all-wheel drive; over 40% energy recovery |
Figures and drivetrain descriptions are from Formula E’s GEN4 FAQ and generation comparison.

How fast is the GEN4 Formula E car?
Formula E publishes GEN4’s top speed as 335 km/h (208 mph), with approximate acceleration of 0–100 km/h in 1.8 seconds and 0–200 km/h in 4.4 seconds. The championship also expects qualifying pace to be around 10 seconds per lap faster than GEN3. That is an expectation, not a guaranteed gap: circuits, aerodynamic setup, tires and conditions all affect lap times. GEN4’s 2026/27 race debut is still ahead, so none of these figures should be read as measured championship-race performance. Formula E GEN4 FAQ.
What changes beyond top speed?
Permanent all-wheel drive
GEN4’s defining traction change is permanent active all-wheel drive. Unlike GEN3 Evo, whose AWD is available in selected phases, GEN4 is specified to use it continuously. More consistent traction can shape how drivers deploy power, particularly as they accelerate out of corners; the published specification does not establish a lap-time gain for every circuit.

More power and energy recovery
The FIA specifies 450 kW of standard race power and up to 600 kW in Attack Mode and qualifying. Maximum regenerative-braking power is specified at 700 kW, and race energy capacity rises to as much as 55 kWh. Together, these figures point to a car built around power delivery and energy management as well as outright speed. They are technical specifications, not a promise that every driver will use maximum output continuously. FIA’s GEN4 announcement.
Two aerodynamic configurations
The FIA describes a high-downforce setup for qualifying and a low-downforce setup for race conditions. The intent is to tailor the car to different demands: qualifying prioritizes pace, while the race configuration and energy strategy are part of a longer contest. The actual effect depends on circuit and conditions; the configuration labels alone do not provide a universal performance comparison.

What is next for Formula E in 2026/27?
The sporting format is also set to change around GEN4’s capabilities. On double-header weekends, the announced plan introduces two distinct race formats:
| Format | Aerodynamics | Pit Boost | Race length |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic Efficiency E-Prix | Low downforce | Yes | Not stated in the FIA announcement |
| Performance E-Prix Unleashed | High downforce | No | Shorter than the Classic Efficiency E-Prix |
The FIA says the event’s aerodynamic configuration will be confirmed 21 days beforehand and that qualifying points will be introduced for both the drivers’ and teams’ championships. These are announced changes for 2026/27, rather than a description of the current format. FIA World Motor Sport Council update.

What do GEN4’s sustainability specifications mean?
Formula E says GEN4 construction is designed to be 100% recyclable or reusable and to include at least 20% recycled content. Its tire specification calls for 65% renewable and recycled materials. These are material and design specifications; they do not, by themselves, quantify the car’s total lifecycle emissions or prove a whole-vehicle carbon saving. The FIA says manufacturers develop powertrain and energy-management technology, but the published specifications do not establish which specific race innovations will reach consumer cars, or when.
