Oscar Piastri’s rise in Formula 1 has brought major results, but the Melbourne-born McLaren driver has described racing at home as something personal as well as professional. His second season, in 2024, delivered his first Grand Prix wins; by March 2026, he was still clear that a victory at Albert Park would mean something special—and that it would depend on the car beneath him.
What made Piastri’s 2024 season a breakout?
In his second Formula 1 season, Piastri took his first two Grand Prix victories and added six more podium finishes, McLaren said in a 6 March 2025 interview. He also completed every racing lap of the 2024 F1 season, according to the team.
The year was significant for McLaren as well: the team won the Constructors’ Championship for the first time in 26 years. Piastri’s individual results were part of a broader team achievement, rather than a story of national identity alone.
How did Piastri assess his own progress?
Looking back in the March 2025 interview, Piastri called 2024 “a good step up” from his rookie season, while making clear that he saw room to improve: “Last year, for the most part, was a good step up from my rookie season, but I still need to improve.”

He pointed to consistency and continued development as priorities. That self-assessment gives useful context to the results: a breakout season, in his view, was progress rather than a finished product.
What does representing Australia mean at the Melbourne Grand Prix?
Piastri is from Melbourne, and Albert Park’s Australian Grand Prix is a home event in a direct sense: he returns to race in the city where he grew up. Formula1.com described the event as special to him in its 6 March 2026 profile.

At the FIA’s Thursday press conference before the 2026 Australian Grand Prix, Piastri said: “Every driver wants to win their home race and that’s no different for me.” Asked what a win would mean, he replied, “It would be really special,” while noting that the outcome depended on the team’s performance. The aspiration is plainly personal, but his qualification recognizes that a driver cannot separate a race result from the competitiveness of the car.
How did he describe handling pressure?
In the March 2025 interview, Piastri singled out Baku as a high-pressure race that tested him. “There were some pretty high-pressure races last season – Baku is the immediate one that springs to mind, so I think it [my ability to handle pressure] was definitely put to the test at certain points last year,” he said.

His comment is specific to his experience in the 2024 season. It does not claim that pressure disappears with success; instead, it shows that he viewed managing it as part of the learning curve.

In a 6 March 2026 profile, Formula1.com reported that Piastri had taken seven wins in the preceding 2025 season. That is a dated account of the 2025 campaign, not a statement about his current standings or results beyond that season.

The same profile reported a Melbourne fan event in 2026 that included memorabilia, merchandise, racing simulators and replica mini-helmet prizes. Piastri described lending memorabilia from recent years as “a really cool event.” It offered a visible connection between his growing career and the Australian fans who follow him at home.
