Formula 3 (F3) sits below Formula 2 (F2) on the modern single-seater ladder. F3 is a third-rung development championship where drivers prove speed, race craft and tyre management before moving up. F2 is the penultimate stage and the final series described by its organiser as preparation for Formula 1. Both use controlled, one-make equipment, but F2 has substantially more power, more F1-oriented systems and a later-career grid. Neither a strong F3 season nor an F2 title guarantees an F1 contract: seats, funding, timing and team selection still decide who advances.

F3 and F2 at a glance

Comparison Formula 3 Formula 2
Place on ladder Third rung; preparation for F2 and, ultimately, F1 Penultimate stage and final step described by the series before F1
Common specification One-make category with 30 identical cars One-make category; 22 cars share the Dallara/Mecachrome specification
Engine specification in the cited material 2025 car: naturally aspirated 3.4-litre six-cylinder, 380 HP at 8,000 rpm Current car: turbocharged 3.4-litre V6, 620 HP at 8,750 rpm
Technical purpose Builds speed, race craft and tyre-management skills in a feeder environment Closer simulation of F1 safety, systems and operating demands
2026 calendar 10 events 14 rounds
Published progression support Five highest-placed drivers can share a €1 million fund if they race in F2 the following season; the champion also has a €300,000 Pirelli prize No comparable individual seat-payment figure published in the official material reviewed
Seat cost Official comparable season price: not stated Official comparable season price: not stated; the series only says its operating cost is around 2% of running an F1 team

The table compares figures from different model years where necessary. The 380-HP specification belongs specifically to the 2025 F3 car, while the 620-HP figure is the current F2 specification. Horsepower is not a lap-time comparison: circuit layout, aerodynamic trim, tyres, fuel, weather and regulations all affect speed.

The categories are also different in scale. F3’s 30-car field creates a large group in which qualifying margins and traffic management are constantly tested. F2 has 22 cars, but each round carries greater attention because it is the final organized step identified by the championship before F1. Neither grid is an identical test of talent: team preparation, setup decisions, reliability and a driver’s experience all influence the result.

Is F3 below F2?

Yes. F3 is normally the third major step after karting and earlier junior single-seater categories. F2 follows it and is intended for drivers who are closer to an F1-ready standard. A driver may enter either series through a different route, but the championships’ stated roles are clear: F3 develops the fundamentals needed for F2, while F2 is the final proving ground before Formula 1.

Both championships run as support categories at selected Formula 1 weekends. That gives drivers access to F1 teams, engineers and broadcasters, but exposure is not a contract. A quick F3 driver still needs a suitable F2 seat, and an impressive F2 season still depends on an available F1 opportunity.

The ladder should therefore be read as a development structure, not an automatic promotion queue. A driver can be ready for the next technical challenge while no suitable seat is available, or can have the required budget without the results a team wants. Timing, funding and the number of openings matter at every transition.

How different are the cars?

Engine layout and output

The current F2 car uses a turbocharged 3.4-litre Mecachrome V6 rated at 620 HP at 8,750 rpm. The 2025 F3 car uses a naturally aspirated 3.4-litre Mecachrome six-cylinder producing 380 HP at 8,000 rpm. The displacement is similar, but the turbocharged F2 engine delivers a much higher output and a different throttle and energy-management workload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On the published figures, F2 has 240 HP more than the 2025 F3 car. That arithmetic is useful for illustrating the step in engine output, but it does not establish a fixed acceleration or lap-time advantage. Chassis balance, aerodynamic drag, tyre condition, fuel load and the driver’s ability to use the power all matter.

F2’s official technical figures include 0–100 km/h in 2.90 seconds, a 335 km/h maximum in a Monza aerodynamic configuration with DRS, and a mass of 795 kg with the driver aboard. The top-speed number is configuration-specific; it should not be treated as a normal speed at every circuit. The Monza reference also shows why a headline maximum is not a universal performance rating: a low-drag setup and DRS are part of the stated conditions.

Why horsepower does not tell the whole story

It is tempting to calculate a fixed F2-versus-F3 lap-time gap from the engine figures, but that would be misleading. Downforce levels, tyre compounds and operating windows, fuel loads, DRS use, track temperature and race regulations change from venue to venue. The official information does not provide a directly comparable lap-time test, so no universal seconds-per-lap advantage can be stated responsibly.

Acceleration also depends on gearing, traction and the corner preceding a straight. A car with less power can be competitive in a technical section, while a higher-powered car gains more on a long straight. For that reason, use the engine numbers to describe the technical step, not to promise a particular time gap at every circuit.

One-make equipment

Neither championship is an open engineering contest. F3 supplies 30 identical cars, while F2 fields 22 cars built to the same Dallara chassis and Mecachrome power-unit specification. Standardisation limits differences in engines, aerodynamics and development budgets, making driver performance, setup choices, tyre preparation, pit work and team execution more visible. It does not make every car perform identically: engineering quality and operating decisions still matter.

One-make does not mean one setup. Teams still choose suspension settings, aerodynamic trim, tyre preparation and race strategy within the rules. Drivers must explain what the car is doing, use limited practice time effectively and deliver a clean qualifying lap. Those skills are part of why the series can function as a comparison platform even when the hardware is controlled.

How each series prepares a driver

F3: learning to manage speed and tyres

F3 is designed as a training ground. Drivers must extract performance from a less powerful car, protect tyres over a race stint and fight in close traffic. The 2025 generation moved closer to F2 and F1 in safety and systems, and its 16-inch tyres are intended to teach the tyre-management techniques needed higher up the ladder.

  • 100% Satisfaction: Our products have quality assurance, if you have questions or are not satisfied after receiving the product, don't worry, please contact us as soon as possible, we provide after-sales service.

That makes F3 performance broader than a single qualifying lap. Teams can assess starts, overtaking judgement, consistency, technical feedback and the ability to preserve performance when the tyres lose grip. A driver who is fast but repeatedly overheats the tyres or loses positions in traffic has a different development need from one who can manage a race but lacks qualifying speed.

F2: the closer F1 rehearsal

F2’s current-generation car was introduced in 2024 and was developed to align more closely with F1 safety regulations and technology. Drivers encounter higher power, turbocharged-engine procedures, DRS operation, pit-stop strategy and a working environment that more closely resembles the demands of an F1 weekend. The goal is not to make F2 identical to F1, but to reduce the technical and operational jump.

F2 therefore tests whether a driver can combine speed with professional execution under greater power and attention. Results remain central, but teams also watch how a driver handles feedback, strategy changes and the pressure of being one step from the top category. The controlled specification helps teams compare those behaviors without an unlimited development race obscuring them.

The next F2 car package

For the 2027–2029 seasons, the FIA has announced an updated F2 package that retains the existing chassis while revising the front and rear wings and adding an onboard starter. The 3.4-litre turbo V6 remains rated at 620 HP. FIA F2 Championship CEO Bruno Michel said: “When working on this new car, our first goal was to ensure it remains the perfect tool to prepare drivers for F1.” He also said retaining the chassis and redesigning the wings helps keep costs managed.

The dates matter. The current-generation F2 car began in 2024, while the announced changes apply to the 2027–2029 seasons. A specification listed for one period should not be presented as if it describes every F2 car ever raced or every future package.

2026 calendars and race-weekend exposure

The 2026 calendar announcement lists 14 F2 rounds and 10 F3 events. It does not provide corresponding total race counts in the material available here, so those event figures should not be converted into an assumed number of races.

For context only, the 2025 Formula 1 guide recorded two F2 races at each of 14 rounds, or 28 races. The official 2025 F3 calendar announcement recorded 10 rounds and 20 races. Those are 2025 figures, not a substitute for an unreported 2026 race total.

Using the year beside every number prevents a common comparison error. The 2025 F2 count of 28 races and the 2025 F3 count of 20 races describe that season’s formats; the 2026 announcement gives rounds or events, not a confirmed race-total breakdown in the published material cited here.

F2 and F3 support races place junior drivers in front of F1 teams and a global audience. The commercial and sporting value of that setting is real, but it remains an opportunity to be evaluated rather than a promise of promotion. A driver still has to turn visibility into results, useful feedback and a credible case for the next seat.

How much does an F2 or F3 seat cost?

There is no reliable, like-for-like official price for a driver’s F2 or F3 season in the material available. Published internet estimates often combine different teams, testing programmes, crash bills, management fees and currencies; presenting one number as a universal seat price would create false precision.

What is documented What it means
F2 says its operating cost is around 2% of running an F1 team This is a series-level comparison used in the context of cost controls, not an individual driver’s invoice and not a comparison with F3
F2 uses centralised purchasing, limits team personnel and testing, and bans individual development costs These rules constrain escalation, but they do not reveal what a driver or sponsor pays for a seat
Official comparable F2 and F3 seat prices Not stated

Therefore, a prospective driver should request a team-specific written budget that separates the race seat, official tests, private tests, simulator work, travel, insurance, damage liability, management commission and tax. Two offers with the same headline price may cover very different programmes.

Ask whether the quotation covers every scheduled event, replacement parts after an accident, the number of test days, engineering personnel, data access and any performance-related bonuses. Clarify which costs are paid directly to the team and which are paid to outside suppliers. A lower quote can become more expensive if major items are excluded or charged after an incident.

The absence of an official price is itself important information. It means a responsible comparison can explain the structure of costs and the published controls, but should not turn the F2 percentage figure into a driver budget or claim that F3 has a universally established cheaper price.

What funding is available for moving from F3 to F2?

From the 2025 season onward, the five highest-placed F3 drivers can receive a progression fund totalling €1 million, provided they race in F2 the following season. The published allocations are:

  • Champion: €300,000
  • Second place: €250,000
  • Third place: €200,000
  • Fourth place: €150,000
  • Fifth place: €100,000

The fund is additional to the existing €300,000 Pirelli prize for the F3 champion. These are published awards, not claims that a driver’s entire F2 season is paid. Eligibility depends on the driver actually progressing to F2 in the next season, and the amounts may cover only part of a negotiated programme.

The condition also explains why the award is progression support rather than a general cash bonus. A driver cannot treat the amount as an unconditional payment while remaining in F3 or moving to an unrelated category. The next-season F2 requirement ties the fund to the stated purpose of helping drivers climb the ladder.

How career progression really works

From karting or junior single-seaters to F3

F3 gives a young driver a common platform in which speed, qualifying performance, starts, overtaking, consistency and tyre preservation can be judged against a large international field. Results matter, but so do the quality of the team, the driver’s technical feedback and the ability to convert limited practice into race pace.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

From F3 to F2

Promotion usually requires more than a championship position. F2 seats are limited, budgets must be assembled and teams select drivers according to performance, timing, relationships and available backing. The new F3 fund can reduce the financial gap for eligible drivers, but it does not create an automatic seat.

A sensible progression review looks at the whole season: qualifying trend, race starts, tyre life, incident rate, wet- and dry-weather performance, feedback quality and how the driver responds when the setup is not ideal. One strong weekend is useful, but teams need evidence that performance can be repeated across the calendar.

From F2 to Formula 1

F2 is the closest step to F1, yet an F2 title is not a guaranteed contract. F1 teams have a finite number of race seats, existing junior-driver agreements and changing competitive needs. A driver can be fast enough for F1 and still wait for an opening, move to a reserve role or pursue another professional category.

The FIA Formula 2 Championship’s role was summarised by FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem: “The FIA Formula 2 Championship continues to prove itself as a vital platform for developing the next generation of top drivers, and the 2026 calendar reflects our commitment to delivering a competitive and globally diverse series.” “Vital platform” describes the championship’s purpose; it is not a promise of placement.

Car generations, fuel and sustainability

F3’s 2025 technical change

The 2025 F3 car introduced larger 16-inch tyres and revised systems alongside its safety and performance updates. FIA Formula 3 Technical Director Pierre-Alain Michot said: “In 2023 and 2024, we were using 55% sustainable fuel and in 2025, we move to 100% advanced sustainable fuel.” The fuel change is part of the category’s staged move toward the FIA’s 100% sustainable-fuel standard.

The move to larger tyres is relevant to driver development as well as equipment. The stated aim is to teach management skills that carry into faster categories, so the tyre specification is part of the training philosophy rather than merely a visual change.

F2’s development path

F2’s move toward the FIA 100% sustainable-fuel standard is also described as a multi-step effort that began in 2023. Its 2024 car generation continues through the announced 2027–2029 package, which changes aerodynamic components and adds the onboard starter without replacing the chassis.

Keeping the chassis while changing wings and adding the starter is also a cost-management decision. It allows the championship to update the car’s preparation and operating characteristics without requiring a wholly new chassis for the announced period.

Which series is the right target?

  • Choose F3 as the immediate target if you are still developing qualifying execution, wheel-to-wheel judgement, tyre preservation and the consistency required over a full international season.
  • Target F2 when your results, technical feedback and race management already demonstrate that you can handle a more powerful turbocharged car and an F1-style professional environment.
  • Evaluate the programme, not only the badge. Ask what testing, engineering support, simulator time, data access and damage coverage are included. A well-supported F3 season can be more valuable than an underfunded F2 appearance.
  • Plan funding early. The published F3 awards help eligible drivers, but neither series provides a universal, publicly stated seat price, and progression still depends on available opportunities.

When comparing offers, put the same questions to every team. Which car specification will be used? What mileage is included in official and private testing? Who pays for damage, travel and insurance? How many engineers attend each round? Is simulator work included? Which performance clauses can change the price? Written answers make two programmes genuinely comparable.

Frequently asked questions

Is Formula 3 slower than Formula 2?

F3 has substantially less published engine output: 380 HP for the 2025 car versus 620 HP for the current F2 car. That indicates a major performance step, but official material does not provide a universal lap-time comparison. Track, tyres, fuel, aero trim and weather prevent a single fixed time gap.

Are F2 and F3 cars identical?

No. Both are one-make championships, but they use different cars and specifications. F3 has 30 identical cars, while F2 has 22 cars using the Dallara/Mecachrome specification. Standardisation controls the equipment comparison; it does not make the two categories interchangeable.

Does winning F3 guarantee an F2 seat?

No. Results help, and the five highest-placed drivers can qualify for the published progression fund if they race in F2 the following season, but seats, budgets and team choices still determine who moves up.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does winning F2 guarantee Formula 1?

No. F2 is the penultimate stage and the final preparation step described by its organiser before F1, but the number of F1 seats is limited. Team selection, timing, existing contracts and available opportunities remain decisive.

What is the official cost of an F3 or F2 seat?

No comparable official season-seat price is stated. F2’s claim that its operating cost is around 2% of an F1 team’s cost is a series-level cost-control comparison, not a driver’s invoice and not an F3 comparison.

How much is the F3 progression fund?

The total is €1 million for the five highest-placed drivers, allocated as €300,000, €250,000, €200,000, €150,000 and €100,000. It is conditional on racing in F2 the following season and is additional to the €300,000 Pirelli prize for the F3 champion.

How many events are on the 2026 calendars?

The 2026 announcement lists 10 F3 events and 14 F2 rounds. It does not provide corresponding total race counts in the material cited here. For 2025, the published figures were 20 F3 races and 28 F2 races, so those numbers should remain year-labeled.

What changed on the F2 and F3 cars?

F3 introduced a new car for 2025, including larger 16-inch tyres and revised systems. F2’s current generation began in 2024; its announced 2027–2029 package keeps the chassis, revises the front and rear wings, retains the 620-HP turbo V6 and adds an onboard starter.

Bottom line

F3 is the controlled proving ground below F2: less powerful, younger and focused on building the fundamentals. F2 is faster, turbocharged and explicitly shaped as the final preparation step before Formula 1. The cars’ common specifications make driver and team execution easier to compare, while the ladder’s limited seats make progression competitive rather than automatic. Use the published technical, funding and calendar figures as season-specific reference points, and treat any claimed seat budget as a team-specific quotation rather than a universal price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is F3 below F2?

Yes. F3 is the third rung and normally prepares drivers for F2; F2 is the penultimate stage before Formula 1.

How much more powerful is an F2 car?

The current F2 car is rated at 620 HP, compared with 380 HP for the 2025 F3 car. That is a 240-HP difference, not a guaranteed lap-time gap.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much does an F2 or F3 seat cost?

The official material does not publish comparable season-seat prices. Ask teams for itemized, written budgets rather than relying on a universal estimate.

Can F3 prize money pay for F2?

The five highest-placed F3 drivers can share €1 million if they race in F2 the following season, but the awards are contributions, not proof that a full F2 programme is funded.

Does an F2 title guarantee F1?

No. F2 is the final preparation step described by its organizer, but F1 seats, timing, funding and team selection still control progression.

The Bottom Line

F3 develops the fundamentals; F2 applies them in a faster, more F1-oriented car. Compare seasons and car generations carefully, and treat costs and promotion as team- and opportunity-dependent rather than automatic.
