Formula 1 runs two season-long championships. A driver scores for that driver’s finishing results, while a constructor (team) scores the points earned by both of its cars. Grand Prix races and eligible Sprints feed both standings. At season’s end, the highest total wins each title, with countback rules deciding a tie.
The figures below follow the FIA 2026 Formula One Regulations, Section A, Issue 03, Article A2, issued 25 June 2026. The FIA regulations index listed that as the current Section A issue when checked on 13 October 2026; a later amendment would take precedence.

What the two championships measure
Drivers’ Championship
Each driver accumulates points from that driver’s classified results in Grand Prix races and eligible Sprints. The title goes to the driver with the highest total after the competitions that actually took place. The FIA describes the rule this way: “The Drivers’ Championship title will be awarded to the F1 Driver who has scored the highest number of points, calculated in accordance with Article A2.2, taking into consideration all results obtained during the Competitions that have actually taken place.”

A constructor’s total combines the results of both cars entered by that team. If both cars finish in scoring positions, both scores are added; it is not a one-car competition. The FIA awards the title to the team with the highest combined total from the competitions that actually took place.

The same race and Sprint points are entered in both tables. The difference is whose results are added: one driver’s results for the Drivers’ Championship, versus both cars’ results for the Constructors’ Championship.
Grand Prix points for a full-distance race
When the race leader completes at least 75% of the scheduled distance, the normal top-10 scale applies:
| Finishing position | Points |
|---|---|
| 1st | 25 |
| 2nd | 18 |
| 3rd | 15 |
| 4th | 12 |
| 5th | 10 |
| 6th | 8 |
| 7th | 6 |
| 8th | 4 |
| 9th | 2 |
| 10th | 1 |
Those values are regulatory points, not a bonus calculated from elapsed time or fastest lap. A driver classified 11th or lower receives no Grand Prix finishing points under this table.

Reduced points when a Grand Prix is shortened
The race table is selected by the percentage of scheduled distance completed by the leader. The percentage is not based on the distance completed by each individual car. Before any race points can be awarded, at least two complete, consecutive laps must be completed without a Safety Car or Virtual Safety Car procedure.
| Leader’s completed distance | 1st | 2nd | 3rd | 4th | 5th | 6th | 7th | 8th | 9th | 10th |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 75% or more | 25 | 18 | 15 | 12 | 10 | 8 | 6 | 4 | 2 | 1 |
| 50% to under 75% | 19 | 14 | 12 | 10 | 8 | 6 | 4 | 2 | 1 | 1 |
| 25% to under 50% | 13 | 10 | 8 | 6 | 5 | 4 | 3 | 2 | 1 | Not awarded |
| At least two laps but under 25% | 6 | 4 | 3 | 2 | 1 | Not awarded | Not awarded | Not awarded | Not awarded | Not awarded |
| Fewer than two eligible consecutive laps, or otherwise below the minimum | No points | |||||||||
For example, a race in which the leader completes 60% of the scheduled distance uses the second row: first place is worth 19 points and tenth is worth 1. A race reaching 30% uses the third row, where ninth receives 1 point and tenth is outside the scoring positions. These are illustrations of applying the distance bands; they do not describe a particular event.
Why the Safety Car wording matters
The minimum is not simply “two laps shown on the timing screen.” The regulation requires two complete, consecutive laps without a Safety Car or Virtual Safety Car procedure before points can exist. If that requirement is not met, the race is treated as producing no points even if cars have circulated for other laps.

Sprint points
Sprints award points to the top eight finishers:
| Finishing position | Points |
|---|---|
| 1st | 8 |
| 2nd | 7 |
| 3rd | 6 |
| 4th | 5 |
| 5th | 4 |
| 6th | 3 |
| 7th | 2 |
| 8th | 1 |
For any Sprint points to be awarded, the leader must complete at least 50% of the scheduled Sprint distance and at least two complete, consecutive laps must be completed without a Safety Car or Virtual Safety Car procedure. If either minimum is not met, no Sprint points are awarded. Sprint points count toward both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships, so a team adds the Sprint scores of both its cars just as it does for a Grand Prix.

Two cars, one constructor score
Suppose one team’s cars finish a full-distance Grand Prix in second and seventh. The constructor receives 18 plus 6, for 24 points. Each driver receives only the points for that driver’s own finish: 18 for the driver in second and 6 for the driver in seventh.
The same arithmetic applies to Sprints. If the two cars finish third and eighth in a Sprint, the team adds 6 and 1 for 7 constructor points, while the drivers receive 6 and 1 individually.

What does not happen
- The constructor does not receive a separate bonus for entering two cars.
- A driver does not inherit a team-mate’s points.
- Race and Sprint scores are not kept in separate championship totals; they are added to the relevant season total.
How the season standings are decided
After each competition, the official classification updates each driver’s and constructor’s cumulative total. At the end of the season, the highest total wins. The FIA wording refers to all results from competitions that actually took place, so an event that never occurs does not contribute hypothetical points.
There is no fastest-lap point in the current Section A Article A2 tables. Do not add one to a driver’s or constructor’s total when checking the standings.
What happens when points are tied
Drivers or teams tied at season’s end
The FIA resolves a championship tie by comparing race results in descending order of finishing position:

- Count race wins for each tied driver or team.
- If still tied, compare second-place finishes.
- Continue through third places and subsequent race positions until the order is separated.
- If the race-result comparison still cannot decide the tie, apply the same comparison to qualifying results from the season.
This countback applies to the final championship order. It is different from how points are handled when cars share a position in an individual event.
Cars tied for a position in one event
If two cars are classified as tied for the same event position, the points assigned to the tied positions are added together and shared equally. For instance, if two cars dead-heat for a position that would otherwise receive 10 and the next position would receive 8, the 18 points are divided equally, giving each car 9. The shared points then enter the relevant driver and constructor totals.
Worked season example
Consider a driver who wins one full-distance Grand Prix (25 points), finishes fourth in another (12), and takes second in a Sprint (7). That driver’s total from those three results is 44 points. If the driver’s team-mate scores 10 and 4 in the same Grand Prix events and does not score in the Sprint, the team’s combined total from those competitions is 25 + 12 + 10 + 4 + 7 = 58 points. The driver’s 44 remains an individual total; the team’s 58 includes both cars.

Now change the second Grand Prix to a race stopped after 60% of the scheduled distance. The winner receives 19 rather than 25, and fourth receives 10 rather than 12. The driver’s total becomes 19 + 10 + 7 = 36, demonstrating why the completed-distance band must be checked before adding a result.
How to read a points table after a disrupted weekend
- Identify whether the session was a Grand Prix or a Sprint.
- Check the leader’s completed percentage of scheduled distance for a Grand Prix, or the 50% Sprint threshold.
- Confirm that at least two complete, consecutive laps occurred without a Safety Car or Virtual Safety Car procedure.
- Select the applicable row and assign points by official finishing position.
- Add each driver’s result to that driver’s total.
- Add both cars’ results to the constructor’s total.
- If totals are equal at season’s end, use race-win countback, then successive race positions, then qualifying results if necessary.
Common mistakes
- Using 25 points for every Grand Prix win: 25 applies only when the leader completes at least 75% of scheduled distance.
- Applying a driver’s distance instead of the leader’s: the race table is chosen by the leader’s completed distance.
- Counting a Sprint as a miniature full race: the Sprint scale is 8 to 1 for the top eight, with its own 50% and two-lap conditions.
- Giving the team only the lead driver’s points: both entered cars’ results count for the Constructors’ Championship.
- Adding a fastest-lap bonus: the current 2026 Article A2 tables contain no fastest-lap point.
- Confusing an event dead heat with a championship tie: a shared event position divides the combined position points; a season tie uses countback.
Which rules control if the wording changes?
The controlling document for the figures in this article is the FIA 2026 Formula One Regulations, Section A [General Provisions], Issue 03, Article A2, issued 25 June 2026. The FIA index checked on 13 October 2026 listed Section A Issue 03 and Section B Issue 09, dated 1 October 2026, as the latest relevant documents. Because regulations can be amended, verify the current issue when calculating a live championship or an event held after a new publication.
