The forgotten Oldsmobile powerhouse behind this title is not a big-block V8: it is the 2.3-liter Quad 4 in the 1991 Quad 442 W-41. The front-wheel-drive performance car was reportedly rated at 190 horsepower, and a 2022 account estimates that about 200 W-41 cars were built. That makes it a rare Oldsmobile performance model, but the available figures do not establish it as one of the rarest production engines in the company’s history.
What engine powered the 1991 Oldsmobile Quad 442 W-41?
The W-41 used a 2.3-liter Quad 4, a dual-overhead-cam inline-four developed for GM’s smaller front-wheel-drive cars. It powered the 1991 Oldsmobile Quad 442, a performance version based on the Cutlass Calais. The arrangement was a sharp departure from the large-displacement V8s associated with many earlier 442s.
ClassicCars.com, in an article republished by Motor Authority in 2022, reports the W-41’s output as 190 horsepower. The same account gives the 1990 W-40’s output as 180 horsepower, making the W-41 a 10-hp step up according to those reported ratings. These figures are secondary-source claims, not period GM specifications documented here.
How rare was the W-41?
The 2022 account estimates that about 200 W-41 Quad 442 cars were built and reports that they were assembled in March 1991. Treat the figure as an approximate count of cars, not a verified total of engines produced. The available evidence does not include a primary GM production record confirming the number.

That estimate supports calling the W-41 a rare model. It does not prove that its engine ranks among the rarest Oldsmobile production engines: no comprehensive comparison of Oldsmobile engine production totals is established here. The car count and engine-production count are not interchangeable.
How the Quad 442 differs from the classic 442
The 1991 Quad 442 revived a familiar name in a very different package: it was based on the front-wheel-drive Cutlass Calais and used a four-cylinder engine. By contrast, GM Heritage describes the 1970 Oldsmobile 442 W-30 as a V8 muscle-car package with a 455-cubic-inch engine rated at 370 horsepower.

| Model and source | Engine and reported output | Application and transmission | Production figure and scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1991 Quad 442 W-41; ClassicCars.com/Motor Authority, 2022 | 2.3-liter Quad 4 inline-four; 190 hp reported | Cutlass Calais-based, front-wheel-drive performance car; five-speed manual, with no automatic offered according to the account | About 200 W-41 cars estimated; not a verified engine-production total |
| 1970 442 W-30; General Motors Heritage | 455 CID V8; 370 hp | V8 muscle-car package; the cited production count is specifically for automatic-equipped cars | 1,542 W-30 cars with automatic transmission |
The production figures are not directly comparable: the W-41 estimate covers W-41 cars generally, while GM Heritage’s W-30 count is limited to cars with automatic transmissions. The comparison illustrates how different the two 442 applications were; it is not a like-for-like rarity ranking.
What made the W-41 more than a badge change?
The 2022 account describes a five-speed manual, specific gearing, and suspension tuning for the road car. It also recounts an origin story through owner Jeff Szafraniec: GM had begun building Quad 4 Calais race cars for SCCA competition, and the W-41 road car followed objections to the use of non-production engines. That history is attributed to the secondary account rather than presented as a directly verified GM or SCCA statement.

The same article distinguishes the competition engines from the production road-car engine. It reports forged crankshafts, titanium connecting rods, and 240 horsepower for race versions. Those details and that output belong to the race engines; they should not be attributed to the production W-41.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the Quad 4 W-41 still matters
The W-41 captures a late, unusual chapter in Oldsmobile performance: a compact, front-wheel-drive Cutlass Calais derivative with a high-output four-cylinder and a manual gearbox, rather than the V8 formula most often associated with the 442 name. Its reported production of about 200 cars explains its scarcity as a model, while the evidence supports a more careful claim than calling its engine definitively one of Oldsmobile’s rarest.
