Performance wagons can pair serious acceleration with a long-roof cargo area, but the available figures do not prove they do everything better than SUVs. The BMW M5 Touring and Mercedes-AMG E 53 HYBRID Wagon are plug-in hybrids with US-market specifications; the cited Audi RS 6 Avant performance sheet covers a 2025 model-year version without establishing current US availability. The right choice depends on where you live, what you carry, and whether you can charge at home.
What a performance wagon does better—and what it does not
A wagon’s defining advantage is its car-like long-roof layout: it can combine a low, performance-oriented body with a load area that extends behind the rear seats. That makes the format compelling for drivers who want speed and practical cargo access without choosing an SUV. But “better” depends on the job. The available manufacturer figures document power, acceleration and some cargo measurements; they do not establish a universal wagon advantage in comfort, handling, efficiency, space or ownership cost.
Nor do the cited figures form a controlled comparison. They come from different model years, markets and measurement contexts. Treat them as a starting point for narrowing choices, not as a head-to-head verdict.

Figures in the first two rows are manufacturer-published and are not results from one test. For BMW, the global release separately lists 727 hp, 1,000 Nm, 0–100 km/h in 3.6 seconds and electric range up to 67 km. Those global figures should not be blended with the US announcement’s horsepower, acceleration or range estimates as if they were one specification sheet. BMW M5 Touring: the high-output plug-in hybrid
BMW’s US announcement describes the 2025 M5 Touring as the first M5 Touring offered in the United States. It gives 717 hp, 738 lb-ft and an estimated 0–60 mph time of 3.5 seconds, alongside an approximately 25-mile projected electric range. These are US launch-announcement figures, not a promise of real-world range or a current quote.
The strongest documented utility case is its cargo capacity. BMW estimates up to 57.6 cubic feet in the US announcement; its global technical information gives luggage capacity from 500 to 1,630 litres. These are different market materials and units, so keep each with its source rather than treating them as interchangeable measurements. The technical sheet also lists a 100 kg maximum roof load and staggered tire sizes: 285/40 ZR20 front and 295/35 ZR21 rear. Confirm fitment for the exact market, model year and wheel package before replacing tires.

The launch announcement listed a base MSRP of $121,500 plus $1,175 destination and handling in August 2024. It is historical launch pricing, not a current transaction price. Check current local inventory or a build quote for the actual model year, options and fees. Mercedes-AMG E 53 HYBRID Wagon: a lower launch price and longer announced US range
Mercedes-Benz USA’s September 11, 2025 announcement describes the 2026 E 53 HYBRID Wagon as using an AMG-enhanced 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six and an electric motor. It lists 577 hp combined, or 604 hp with optional RACE START, a 0–60 mph time of as little as 3.8 seconds and up to 41 miles of all-electric range. The range is the US announcement’s maximum figure; it is not directly comparable with BMW’s approximate projected range without matching test conditions.

Price and performance figures have since differed across Mercedes’ own materials. The launch release said $93,350 starting price and expected arrival at US dealerships in early fall 2025. The US model page accessed October 8, 2026 displays a $95,200 starting price and 4.0-second acceleration. Check a current configurator or dealer quote for the exact vehicle and price. The launch arrival statement is dated and does not establish present inventory. The US launch release and current US model page show those separate contexts.
Mercedes-AMG’s European Estate page gives an electric range of up to 90–97 km under the European EAER method. That is a different market and test basis from the US announcement’s 41-mile figure; do not substitute one for the other. The European model page identifies its context.

Audi RS 6 Avant performance: verify the market before comparing
The available Audi source is a manufacturer specification sheet for the RS 6 Avant performance in a 2025 model-year context. It is useful as a technical reference, but it does not establish current US availability, local pricing or a directly comparable set of US figures. Confirm the country, exact version and model year before treating it as a shopping option. Audi’s MY2025 specification sheet is the cited source.

Start with local availability and the real price
Confirm the exact model year and trim in your market, then compare current base price, destination charges, options and dealer inventory. The BMW and Mercedes figures above are tied to dated US materials, and the Audi reference does not establish a US price. A launch MSRP is not the same as the price of a vehicle available now.

Decide whether plug-in charging fits your routine
The M5 Touring and E 53 HYBRID Wagon are plug-in hybrids. If you expect to use their electric capability regularly, check the vehicle’s market-specific connector and charging specifications, then verify charger compatibility and your home electrical service before installation. BMW’s global release states AC charging up to 11 kW; that is global information, not a guarantee of identical charging equipment or performance in every market. A Level 2 home charger may suit some owners, but it is not included by implication and installation needs vary. BMW’s global release provides the cited charging detail.
Measure the cargo you actually carry
BMW publishes cargo figures, but the sources here do not provide matching measurements for all three wagons. Compare the exact measurements and loading method in the local specifications, and bring a stroller, luggage or other bulky item to a dealer if it is central to the decision. Do not infer that one model has the largest cargo area from a three-way comparison that has no consistent data.
Separate specification claims from driving judgments
Horsepower and acceleration are manufacturer claims in different contexts, not controlled comparative test results. Ride comfort, handling, cabin quietness and real-world efficiency require a named independent road test or your own drive; no like-for-like road-test evidence is established here. Arrange a test drive on roads similar to your daily route before deciding that the performance advantage outweighs the practical trade-offs.
Are performance wagons a better SUV alternative?
They can be the better fit for a driver who values a fast, long-roof car, wants useful cargo access and does not need the body style or capabilities of an SUV. They are not proven universally superior. The cited evidence does not compare these wagons with equivalent SUVs under the same cargo, price, acceleration, comfort or efficiency tests, and it does not support a claim that wagons are better for every buyer.
