Ford is scaling back selected large electric-vehicle programs because, the company said in December 2025, their long-term business cases had weakened. It is redirecting investment toward trucks and vans, hybrids, extended-range electric vehicles, more affordable EVs, and grid-scale battery storage. That is a major change in product mix and capital allocation—not an end to Ford’s EV plans.
Why Ford changed course
Ford’s December 15, 2025 announcement attributed the weaker business case for certain larger EV programs to lower-than-expected demand, high costs, and regulatory changes. Those are Ford’s stated reasons; the company’s announcement and financial reporting do not independently quantify how much each factor contributed.
Ford said it no longer saw a path to long-term profitability in its EV business without making changes. CEO Jim Farley described the response as a reallocation of capital: “The operating reality has changed, and we are redeploying capital into higher-return growth opportunities: Ford Pro, our market-leading trucks and vans, hybrids and high- margin opportunities like our new battery energy storage business.” That is management’s characterization of the opportunity, not an independent finding that the new investments will earn higher returns.
What Ford is changing in its vehicle lineup
The shift is not simply from EVs to hybrids. Ford is narrowing where it puts its pure-EV development money while offering more powertrain choices across its lineup.

- ✅Batter dimensions: 10.75" L x 6.81" W x 8.98" H, Terminal: Tapered terminal (Left negative (-), Right positive (+)). ✅Please ensure to verify the dimensions and terminal position before making a purchase to guarantee compatibility with your vehicle to avoid any fitment issues.
- With a 70AH capacity and 710 cold cranking amps (CCA). Provides reliable performance and long service life, Up to 2 times the cycle life of conventional batteries. If your car's original battery is an AGM type, you must continue using an AGM battery, as your car will not accept a "downgrade" to a flooded battery. Nominal Voltage:12V. Charging Voltage:14.4~15.0V. Acceptable Charging Current:0~21A. Operating Temperature Range: -22°F~158°F.
- Heat / Cold Resistance: The materials used in the construction of AGM batteries (such as glass fiber mats and specialized separators) have better heat resistance. This allows AGM batteries to maintain their performance and capacity even in the hottest climates, They are also more resistant to extreme temperatures, making them ideal for hot or cold regions.
- Low Self-Discharge: AGM batteries have lower self-discharge rates compared to flooded batteries. Self-discharge refers to the loss of capacity that batteries experience over time when not in use. In hot climates, when the battery may need to be stored for extended periods or not frequently used, AGM batteries can better maintain charge, providing higher voltage output and easier engine start-up in any climate.
- Enhanced Safety: AGM batteries have a lower risk of acid leaks and spills compared to flooded batteries. This is because the acid is absorbed and held within the glass fiber mats, reducing the risk of corrosion or damage to surrounding components, this makes AGM batteries more durable and long-lasting, is also two to three times longer than flooded batteries. AGM batteries also have a lower risk of explosion and are safer to handle, making them ideal for high-performance vehicles.
| Powertrain | Ford’s stated direction | What the distinction means |
|---|---|---|
| Hybrid | Expand hybrid options, including in trucks and other vehicles. | A hybrid combines an internal-combustion engine with electric propulsion; it is not a fully electric vehicle. |
| Extended-range EV | Add extended-range electric choices. | This is a separate category from a conventional hybrid and a fully electric vehicle. Ford groups it with hybrids and EVs in its volume target. |
| Fully electric vehicle | Continue EV development, with a North American focus on smaller, more affordable vehicles using the Universal EV Platform; stop selected larger programs whose business cases had eroded. | Ford is concentrating its pure-EV effort on a different price and vehicle segment rather than abandoning all battery-electric models. |
Ford’s stated goal is for hybrids, extended-range EVs, and fully electric vehicles combined to make up about 50% of its global volume by 2030, compared with 17% in 2025. The 50% figure is a combined electrified-vehicle target; it is not a target for hybrids alone.
A current hybrid example: the F-150
Ford’s 2026 F-150 product information lists an available 3.5L PowerBoost full-hybrid V6. Ford’s page gives up to 430 horsepower and 578 lb-ft of torque in one listing, but detailed ratings can differ by trim and configuration. The truck also offers Pro Power Onboard on available configurations. This illustrates that a full hybrid remains part of Ford’s current truck range; one model does not establish whether the broader strategy will succeed.
How large are the announced charges?
Ford forecast about $19.5 billion in special items related to the strategic shift in its December 2025 announcement. The company expected most accounting charges to be recorded in the fourth quarter of 2025, with the remainder in 2026 and 2027. It forecast about $5.5 billion in cash effects, with most cash outflows expected in 2026 and the balance in 2027. These were forecasts at the time of the announcement, not a statement that all of the charges or cash outflows had already occurred.

Ford’s reported 2025 diluted earnings per share were negative $2.06, while adjusted diluted earnings per share were $1.09. Its adjusted EBIT margin was 3.6%, down from 5.5% in 2024. These company-reported figures provide broader financial context; they are not a standalone measure of losses from EVs.

What Ford Energy will sell—and who it is for
Ford introduced Ford Energy in May 2026 as a wholly owned business serving utilities, data centers, and large commercial and industrial customers in the United States. Its announced product, the Ford Energy DC Block, is a utility-scale battery energy storage system assembled in the U.S. It is not a residential battery intended for homeowners.

The DC Block is a standardized 20-foot container built around 512 Ah lithium iron phosphate (LFP) prismatic cells. Ford announced two variants:
- FE-250: designed for a two-hour discharge.
- FE-450: designed for a four-hour discharge.
Both variants use liquid-cooled thermal management and a battery management system. Ford describes the system as designed for 20-year performance; that is a product design claim, not independently verified evidence of service life. The announced information distinguishes the models by discharge duration but does not establish which offers better total cost, lifecycle value, or real-world performance.

Ford said it would repurpose battery manufacturing capacity in Glendale, Kentucky, and planned to deploy at least 20 GWh of annual capacity, with first customer deliveries planned for late 2027. These are production and delivery plans, not confirmation that the facility has already reached that operating rate or begun customer deliveries.

Ford and EDF power solutions North America also announced a five-year framework agreement under which EDF could procure up to 4 GWh of DC Block systems per year, or up to 20 GWh over the agreement. Deliveries were expected to begin in 2028. The maximum volume is a procurement ceiling under the framework, not evidence that EDF has bought the full amount. Ford cited renewable integration and grid resilience as potential applications.

The decision shows Ford changing how it allocates capital after concluding that selected larger EV programs did not offer a viable long-term business case on the terms it expected. The announced plan combines a narrower pure-EV focus with continued development of affordable EVs, more hybrids and extended-range options, and a new stationary-storage business.
It does not yet establish that the revised mix will be more profitable. Ford’s forecast charges, Model e outlook, production plans, and profitability goals are company estimates or targets; results will depend on execution, demand, costs, and other conditions. Ford said it was targeting a path to Model e profitability by 2029, with annual improvement beginning in 2026. That remains a management target, not an accomplished turnaround.
