Ford’s Next-Generation F-150 Lightning Will Be an EREV With a Generator

Ford’s next-generation F-150 Lightning will be an EREV, with electric motors and a generator. Ford estimates more than 700 miles but has not announced electric-only range, price, or launch timing.

Ford announced on December 15, 2025, that the next-generation F-150 Lightning will use an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) layout: electric motors drive the truck, while a generator is intended to extend its range. Ford estimates more than 700 miles with the generator-backed system, but has not published an electric-only range or test conditions. The future model is not yet a purchase-ready replacement with confirmed pricing or launch timing.

How the next F-150 Lightning’s EREV system is supposed to work

Ford says the next-generation Lightning will be propelled by electric motors, with a high-power generator adding range. That means the announced layout is not described as a conventional hybrid in which an engine mechanically drives the wheels. The announcement does not explain the generator’s operating logic or specify its engine, fuel, or output, so the precise energy flow beyond that broad description remains unconfirmed.

Ford’s stated rationale is to retain electric drive while reducing the need for charging stops on long journeys and while towing. That is the automaker’s product positioning, not independent evidence of real-world range or towing performance.

What Ford has—and has not—said about range

Ford estimates more than 700 miles of generator-backed range. The December 15, 2025, announcement does not identify a test procedure or provide a separate electric-only range. The figure should therefore be read as Ford’s estimate, not as an independently verified result or a promise of a particular distance in every driving condition.

How it differs from the current F-150 Lightning

Ford’s current product page describes the existing F-150 Lightning as an electric truck and distinguishes the next-generation model as an EREV. Ford’s December 2025 strategy update, filed with the SEC, says production of the current-generation Lightning has concluded. That is a production-status statement; it does not mean every existing truck has disappeared or that support for current owners has ended.

Do not assume current Lightning battery, charging, trim, price, towing, home-backup, or accessory specifications carry over to the EREV. Ford’s cited announcement does not establish compatibility of current-model accessories or manuals with the future truck.

Towing and exportable power: announced aims, not final specifications

Ford says the EREV will retain exportable electricity for work sites, campsites, and homes during an outage. It has not specified the future truck’s export-power rating or the equipment needed for home use.

Ford also promotes the EREV for towing and long-distance travel, but has not released a final towing limit or performance data. Doug Field, Ford’s chief EV, digital and design officer, said the truck “tows like a locomotive” and that heavy-duty towing and cross-country travel will be “as effortless as the daily commute.” Those are Ford executive claims, not quantified independent findings.

Where it will be built—and when it may arrive

Ford says the next-generation Lightning EREV will be assembled at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn, Michigan. Its December 15, 2025, announcement said further details and launch timing would come later; it did not provide a start-of-production date, price, trims, or retail availability. An announced assembly location is not a launch schedule.

What prospective buyers still need to know

The announcement establishes the broad EREV concept and Ford’s range estimate, but leaves several buying and capability questions unanswered:

  • Generator engine design, fuel, output, and operating strategy
  • Battery capacity and electric-only range
  • Fuel economy and the range-test procedure behind the 700-plus-mile estimate
  • Final towing capacity and exportable-power rating
  • Price, trim lineup, launch date, and start of production

Until Ford publishes specifications for the EREV itself, current Lightning figures and equipment should not be used as stand-ins for the next-generation truck.
