The company announced the change on July 18, 2024, and said production was scheduled to start in 2026. This is a change to Oakville’s production plan—not an announcement that Ford is abandoning all electric-vehicle programs.
What is Ford building at Oakville now?
Ford’s current global plants listing identifies Oakville’s products as F-250–F-450 Super Duty trucks. That listing reflects the plant’s current product assignment; Ford’s 2024 announcement described a planned start in 2026, not proof of a particular production volume or a day-by-day account of current output. The July 2024 plan called for an initial capacity of 100,000 F-Series Super Duty trucks. Separately, a Government of Canada project record describes refurbishment for up to 100,000 units of annual capacity and an onsite stamping facility. Both are capacity figures, not evidence that the plant is producing that many trucks. Ford’s July 2024 announcement; Government of Canada project record
How did Oakville’s plan change?
The shift followed a series of announcements about the facility and Ford’s vehicle timing:

Why did Ford switch from EVs to Super Duty?
Ford’s stated reason: demand for heavy-duty trucks
Ford framed the expansion as a response to demand for Super Duty trucks and growth in Ford Pro, its commercial business. CEO Jim Farley said in the July 2024 announcement: “Super Duty is a vital tool for businesses and people around the world and, even with our Kentucky Truck Plant and Ohio Assembly Plant running flat out, we can’t meet the demand.” This is Ford’s explanation for the decision, rather than an independent finding about market demand.
Unifor’s stated concern: the EV delay and its effects on workers
Unifor presented the retooling as a response to the disruption created by the delay in new vehicle production at Oakville. National President Lana Payne said the delay was “too long, too disruptive, and too harmful to accept.” The union’s account emphasizes workforce concerns; it does not establish a measured employment or economic outcome resulting from the new plan. Will Oakville build an electric Super Duty?
Ford and Unifor described electrified versions of Super Duty as a future plan later in the decade. The available announcements do not establish a final launch date, vehicle configuration, or how any electrified models would fit into Oakville’s production mix. The plan should therefore be understood as a future intention, not a confirmed product specification or launch schedule.

What the change does—and does not—mean
- It does mean: Oakville’s previous battery-electric vehicle production plan was replaced by the Super Duty assembly plan.
- It does not mean: Ford announced the cancellation of all its EV programs. The cited change concerns the Oakville plant.
- It does not establish: actual annual output, the number of workers affected, or the environmental and economic results of the switch. Announced capacity and stated rationales cannot by themselves answer those questions.
