Ford says its next-generation F-150 Lightning will be an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV): electric motors propel the truck, while a high-power generator provides additional range. Ford estimates more than 700 miles of total range, but that is not an EPA-certified figure in the announcement. Price, launch timing, battery-only range, towing ratings and other key specifications remain unannounced.
What Ford announced
On December 15, 2025, Ford announced that the next-generation F-150 Lightning will use EREV technology. The company says electric motors will propel the truck and a high-power generator will provide generator-backed extended range. Ford has not described the detailed component configuration. Ford’s announcement calls it a truck with electric drive and an estimated range of more than 700 miles.
Ford also says the truck will offer exportable electricity for work sites, campsites and home backup during an outage. It plans to assemble the next-generation model at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn, Michigan, and says more details and launch timing will come later. A production location is not an on-sale date.
How an EREV differs from a conventional hybrid
In Ford’s description, the EREV’s wheels are driven by electric motors; the generator supplies electricity to extend range. A conventional hybrid can use an engine to mechanically propel the vehicle as well as electric motors. Ford executive Doug Field described the distinction this way: “Unlike a traditional hybrid, the F-150 Lightning EREV is propelled 100 percent by electric motors.”

The distinction is about how the truck is propelled, not a complete specification of its hardware. Ford has not identified the generator or engine type, explained the component layout, or published battery capacity and charging details. Those specifics should not be assumed from the EREV label alone.
What the 700-mile estimate means
Ford estimates total range at more than 700 miles with generator-backed operation. This is Ford’s estimate from its December 15, 2025 announcement, not an EPA rating or an independently validated range test. The announcement does not give a test cycle or explain the conditions behind the estimate.

It also does not state how far the truck can travel on battery power alone, how much fuel it would use, or what range to expect while towing. Field’s statement that it “tows like a locomotive” is promotional language; Ford did not accompany it with a towing rating or test evidence in the announcement. The estimate therefore cannot yet be used to compare battery-only driving, fuel consumption or towing performance with another pickup.
What Ford has not announced
The announcement and Ford’s current U.S. product FAQ do not provide the specifications a shopper would need to price or compare the EREV. These details remain unannounced:

Ford’s FAQ says it is not prepared to announce a specific availability date. Until Ford publishes the missing details, buyers cannot make a like-for-like comparison of operating costs, charging, towing capability or configurations. Ford’s U.S. F-150 Lightning page and FAQ is the company’s current reference for product and availability updates.
Is Ford discontinuing the electric F-150 Lightning?
Ford’s SEC-filed strategy announcement says production of the current-generation F-150 Lightning has concluded. Ford’s current U.S. FAQ says that version is no longer available in its current form and reiterates the plan for a next-generation EREV. In other words, the announced successor changes the powertrain approach; it is not a promise that the next-generation truck is already available to buy. Ford’s December 15, 2025 SEC filing provides the production and strategy context.
For current owners, Ford says software updates and replacement parts will continue to be available. That support statement applies to the current Lightning; it does not establish that existing accessories or parts will fit the future EREV.

Ford’s December 15, 2025 SEC-filed announcement gives the company’s expected share of global volume from hybrids, extended-range EVs and fully electric vehicles as approximately 50% by 2030, compared with 17% in 2025. These are Ford’s expectations, not independently verified outcomes. The company presents the EREV Lightning as part of a broader mix of gas, hybrid and electric powertrains.

What prospective buyers can evaluate now
The announcement establishes the basic drive concept, a Ford-estimated total range above 700 miles, exportable power and a planned assembly site. It does not yet establish price, availability or enough performance data to decide whether this truck is a better fit than a battery-electric or conventional hybrid pickup.
When specifications arrive, the useful comparison points will include electric-only range, total range and fuel consumption, towing range and rated towing capacity, charging time and access, exportable power, price and operating cost, payload, cab and bed configurations, and actual availability. For now, buyers considering whether to wait should treat the EREV as an announced future model—not an orderable truck with confirmed specs.
