Yes, there is a documented limitation drivers should take seriously—but the evidence does not show that BlueCruise always fails to detect every stopped vehicle. NHTSA says Ford designed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) to inhibit responses to reported stationary objects when the Ford approaches at 62 mph or faster, partly to avoid false detections at long distances. NHTSA also says performance may be limited when poor illumination reduces visibility. Those findings do not calculate an individual driver’s risk. BlueCruise is partial driving automation, not a self-driving system: the driver must keep supervising and be ready to take over.
Can BlueCruise see stopped cars?
It may not respond to a stopped vehicle in some circumstances. In the opening summary for Engineering Analysis EA25001, NHTSA says Ford designed ACC to inhibit responses to reported stationary objects when the subject vehicle approaches at 62 mph or faster. The stated reason was to address possible false detection of stationary objects at long distances. This is a description of ACC’s design behavior—not proof that every BlueCruise-equipped vehicle will miss every stopped car, or that every approach below that speed will be detected. NHTSA’s EA25001 opening resume.
NHTSA also says performance may be limited when visibility is poor because there is insufficient illumination. The finding concerns stationary-object response and specified operating conditions; it should not be treated as a complete account of how the system handles every road hazard or moving vehicle.
What happened in the two fatal crashes?
NTSB investigated two 2024 fatal crashes involving 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E SUVs with BlueCruise engaged. In both, the Mach-E struck a stationary vehicle at highway speed, and investigators recorded no driver-applied or system-initiated braking or steering before impact. NTSB findings describe driver conduct, circumstances, and system performance together; they do not reduce either crash to a simple claim that the driver or the vehicle alone caused it.

The Mach-E was traveling east on I-10 at a system-recorded 74.7 mph when it struck a stationary 1999 Honda CR-V. The Honda driver died; the Ford driver had minor injuries. | NTSB identified the Ford driver’s failure to respond to the stationary vehicle due to distraction, likely from the navigation system, stemming from overreliance on the hands-free system and disengagement from driving, as the probable cause. It also found that the Ford’s partial automation system, including automatic emergency braking, could not detect and respond to the stationary vehicle. NTSB investigation HWY24FH006. |

The Mach-E was traveling north on I-95 at a system-recorded 72.4 mph when it struck a stationary Hyundai Elantra, which was propelled into a stationary Toyota Prius. The Elantra and Prius drivers died. | NTSB identified the Ford driver’s failure to respond due to alcohol impairment that may have been worsened by cannabis use, likely cell-phone distraction, overreliance, and misuse of the system as the probable cause. The driver was traveling about 27 mph above the speed limit in a work zone. NTSB also identified inadequate integration of active speed management with partial automation as a contributing factor. NTSB investigation HWY24FH008. |
NTSB also found the driver-monitoring systems involved in these cases ineffective at detecting distraction or disengagement. In its March 31, 2026 release, NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy said: “We cannot take a ‘hands off’ approach to hands-free driving technology. Lives depend on it.” NTSB’s March 31, 2026 release.
Is BlueCruise safe at highway speeds?
The two investigations and NHTSA’s documented ACC limitation identify real hazards, but they do not establish a risk rate for an individual driver or prove that every use at highway speed will fail. NHTSA’s opening resume lists 32 crashes and 2,004 non-crash reports identified across manufacturer and agency data sources for subject and peer Ford vehicles. Those are report counts in the investigation record—not confirmed system-caused failures or a rate of failure. NHTSA’s EA25001 opening resume.

BlueCruise is a partial driving-automation feature available on certain mapped roadways. Its camera-based driver-monitoring system does not remove the driver’s responsibility to supervise the driving task and respond when conditions exceed system capabilities. Do not treat hands-free operation as permission to stop watching the road.
Which Ford vehicles are in NHTSA’s investigation?
NHTSA opened Preliminary Evaluation PE24012 on April 25, 2024, after receiving notice of two fatal collisions, then upgraded it to Engineering Analysis EA25001 on January 17, 2025. The June 18, 2025 information request defines the U.S.-market subject vehicles as model year 2021–2025 Mustang Mach-E vehicles equipped with Co-Pilot360 Active 2.0 and/or BlueCruise. Other U.S.-market Ford and Lincoln BlueCruise vehicles are defined as peer vehicles; that does not mean every Ford or every BlueCruise generation has been shown to share an identical finding. - Find your vehicle identification number (VIN), usually visible at the base of the windshield or on vehicle registration and insurance documents.
- Open NHTSA’s recall lookup and enter the VIN to check for unrepaired recalls listed for that vehicle.
- If you want broader records, search by year, make, and model; NHTSA says that search can show investigations, complaints, recalls, and manufacturer communications.
- Contact a Ford dealer or Ford customer service about any applicable notice and the next steps for your vehicle.
A VIN lookup checks records associated with a specific vehicle. It cannot establish how the system will perform in a particular, untested road scenario.
