The roughly $30,000 figure was the target Ford announced in August 2025; on August 6, 2026, Ford announced a $28,350 starting MSRP for the standard-range version. Ford says pre-orders are expected to open in early 2027, with customer vehicles planned for later that year. Its Formula 1 partnership and efficiency-bounty program are part of the engineering story—not evidence that a specific race-car part has gone into the truck.
What happened to Ford’s $30,000 electric-truck target?
The price has moved from an early target to a named vehicle’s announced MSRP. Ford’s August 11, 2025 announcement described a midsize electric pickup with a target starting MSRP of about $30,000. On August 6, 2026, Ford named the truck Fathom and announced a $28,350 starting MSRP for its standard-range version. That MSRP excludes taxes, title, registration and fees.
| Ford announcement | Price and what it means |
|---|---|
| August 11, 2025 | About $30,000 target starting MSRP for the planned midsize electric pickup; this was a target, not a final Fathom price. |
| August 6, 2026 | $28,350 starting MSRP for Fathom with the standard-range battery; taxes, title, registration and fees are excluded. |
Neither announcement means the truck is available to buy now. Ford said pre-orders were expected to begin in early 2027. Its August 13, 2026 plant update said production-qualified prototype builds were on track for the first quarter of 2027 and customer vehicles were expected later that year; those are planned milestones, not completed ones.
How does Ford plan to make the truck less expensive?
Ford’s cost argument combines a new vehicle platform and assembly process with an effort to use energy more efficiently. The company says Fathom will be the first vehicle on its Universal EV Platform, a planned foundation for a family of electric vehicles. Ford has described the platform as a way to rethink both vehicle engineering and how the vehicle is assembled.

A different assembly sequence
In Ford’s announced process, front and rear vehicle subassemblies and the structural-battery assembly are built separately, then brought together. Ford says the Fathom is planned for Louisville Assembly Plant. Its original 2025 plan also specified LFP batteries assembled in Michigan. These are company plans, not confirmation that production has begun.
Efficiency instead of a bigger battery
Ford says it is addressing the range expectations of some customers—around 300 miles—through aerodynamics, weight reduction and energy management, rather than relying on a larger, more expensive battery. That is Ford’s stated engineering strategy, not a certified range for Fathom. The company has not announced an EPA range rating in the materials cited here.

Ford says the truck’s footprint will be comparable to a Maverick, while its design will be distinct, and that passenger space will exceed that of a 2025 Toyota RAV4. Those comparisons describe Ford’s intended packaging; they do not establish final dimensions or other vehicle specifications.
What does Ford’s Formula 1 partnership have to do with the truck?
Ford’s F1 role is a technical partnership with Red Bull Powertrains, not a claim that the pickup is a race-car derivative. Announced in 2023, the partnership is for a next-generation hybrid power unit for Oracle Red Bull Racing and Scuderia AlphaTauri from 2026 to at least 2030.

Ford has named battery-cell and electric-motor technology, power-unit control software, analytics and combustion-engine development as areas for collaboration. CEO Jim Farley described F1 as a platform to innovate and share ideas and technologies. Those areas make the partnership relevant to Ford’s broader engineering work, but the available announcements do not establish that a particular F1 component or innovation has been transferred to Fathom—or that F1 alone accounts for its price.

What has Ford announced about charging and power features?
Ford’s February 2026 Universal EV Q&A says the planned truck will have a NACS charging port. Ford says adapters are intended to enable CCS DC fast charging and J1772 AC charging. The Q&A does not state charge rates or a 10–80% charging time, so those figures cannot yet be used to compare Fathom’s charging performance.
