Ford issued the warning on August 9, 2024. The “9-year-old” wording refers to the earliest of the recall campaigns covered by that advisory, not to a new recall issued in 2026. The campaigns identified in Ford’s announcement were 15S21, 17S42, and 19S01. The warning remains relevant whenever an individual vehicle still has an unrepaired applicable recall.

This is not a blanket determination that every vehicle in those model-year ranges is unsafe or has an open recall. A model, year, and trim are not enough to establish recall status. You must check the individual vehicle identification number (VIN) using NHTSA’s recall lookup or Ford’s recall system.
Why is the Takata airbag recall dangerous?
The affected component is a Takata passenger frontal airbag inflator. If the supplemental restraint system deploys in a crash, the inflator can rupture instead of operating normally. A rupture can propel metal fragments into the cabin, increasing the risk of serious injury or death.
The danger does not mean that every affected airbag will explode during ordinary driving. The rupture risk is associated with airbag deployment in a crash. According to NHTSA, non-desiccated Takata inflators can become more hazardous after prolonged exposure to high heat and humidity. Vehicle age, climate, and exposure history therefore affect the risk, but they do not provide a reliable way for an owner to decide whether it is safe to continue driving.
NHTSA says approximately 67 million Takata airbags have been recalled in the United States. The only dependable way to determine whether your vehicle is included in this warning is to check its VIN and follow the recall instructions for that vehicle.

What to do if your Ford shows an open Do Not Drive recall
1. Check the VIN, not just the model year
Find the 17-character VIN and enter it into the official NHTSA recall lookup and Ford’s recall system. The VIN is commonly visible through the windshield on the driver’s side of the dashboard and on vehicle paperwork.
A lookup can distinguish an affected vehicle from another vehicle with the same model and year. It can also show whether a recall has already been completed. If the result is unclear, contact an authorized Ford or Lincoln dealer and ask the service department to verify the VIN.
2. Stop driving a listed, unrepaired vehicle
If the VIN confirms an active Takata “Do Not Drive” recall, do not drive the vehicle to the dealership. Call a Ford or Lincoln dealer and explain that the vehicle is covered by an unrepaired Do Not Drive airbag recall. Ask what transportation support is available, including:

- a loaner vehicle; or
- mobile service, if available for that vehicle and location.
NHTSA’s guidance says Ford and Mazda will provide towing and loaner vehicles for affected owners in applicable circumstances. Confirm the details with the dealer before paying for outside transportation. If manufacturer-provided help does not apply or is unavailable, ask the dealer what safe transport options it recommends.

3. Have the repair completed at no charge
Ford’s recall remedy is replacement of the passenger frontal airbag inflator by a Ford or Lincoln dealer. The recall repair is free. Ford’s documentation says the replacement component does not contain the ammonium nitrate used in the recalled component described in the safety report.
After the repair, keep the repair order or recall-completion paperwork. You can also recheck the VIN later to confirm that the recall is recorded as completed.
4. Do not attempt an airbag repair yourself
Do not buy an aftermarket inflator, remove the inflator, install a generic replacement, or use a consumer diagnostic device as a substitute for the official recall lookup and dealer repair. Airbag restraint systems contain pyrotechnic components and require the correct vehicle-specific part and service procedure.

Do not remove an airbag fuse or otherwise disable the system while waiting. NHTSA warns that disabling an airbag guarantees that it will not provide protection in a crash. The safe interim choice for a vehicle confirmed to have an unrepaired Do Not Drive recall is not to drive it.

What if the VIN lookup shows no open recall?
A “no unrepaired recall” result means the lookup did not identify an applicable open recall for that VIN at the time you checked. It does not mean every Ford in the model-year ranges above is affected, and it does not replace normal maintenance or safety inspections.
NHTSA recommends checking a vehicle’s VIN at least twice a year. Recall campaigns can be added in phases, and a vehicle scheduled for a future phase may not appear until the recall is formally issued. Recheck after buying a used vehicle, moving to a different region, receiving a recall letter, or learning that the vehicle has a different repair history than expected.

No. Ford’s Do Not Drive advisory was issued on August 9, 2024, and owner letters were scheduled for late August 2024. The “9-year-old” reference comes from the age of the earliest campaign, which was first issued in 2015.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

As of the research date, August 12, 2026, NHTSA still maintains a current Do Not Drive list and directs owners to verify their VIN. The status of a particular car can change only when its VIN is checked and the required repair is completed or otherwise recorded.

Bottom line for Ford owners
The warning concerns specific unrepaired Takata recalls—not every Ford from the listed years. But if your VIN confirms that your vehicle is covered by an active Do Not Drive campaign, take the warning literally: do not drive it. The correct remedy is a free, dealer-installed inflator replacement, with towing or loaner support potentially available through Ford or the dealer.
