Ford’s all-new chassis cab lineup was a 2020-model-year launch, not a current introduction. The February 4, 2020, report described F-350, F-450 and F-550 models in XL, XLT and Lariat trims, with three engine choices and a new 10-speed automatic. A chassis cab is delivered without a factory pickup bed so a buyer can add a work-specific body or equipment.
What Ford introduced for the 2020 model year
Successful Farming reported on February 4, 2020, that Ford was debuting F-350, F-450 and F-550 Super Duty Chassis Cab trucks in XL, XLT and Lariat trims. The report’s powertrain, PTO, payload and launch-price details below describe that historical lineup; they are not current specifications or prices.
Engines and transmission
The report listed three engine options: a 7.3-liter gasoline V8, a third-generation 6.7-liter Power Stroke turbocharged diesel V8, and a 6.2-liter gasoline V8. It also described a new 10-speed TorqShift heavy-duty automatic transmission. These are figures and descriptions attributed to the 2020 report, rather than independently verified Ford specifications.
Power take-off
The 10-speed transmission was available with a live-drive power take-off (PTO), according to the report. It said PTO was standard on diesel-equipped models. Buyers evaluating a work truck should confirm PTO availability and requirements for the specific model year, engine, transmission and intended equipment.

Payload and launch prices
Successful Farming reported a maximum payload of 12,750 pounds for the 2020 lineup. It also gave these launch starting prices:
| 2020 model and trim | Reported launch starting price |
|---|---|
| F-350 XL | $34,600 |
| F-450 XL | $39,270 |
| F-550 XL | $40,365 |
Those are historical reported starting prices, not current MSRPs. The 12,750-pound payload is likewise the report’s stated maximum, not a rating for every cab, chassis, engine or completed upfit configuration. The report does not provide a complete configuration-by-configuration comparison.

What a chassis cab truck is
Ford’s F-Series FAQ defines a chassis cab as the cab, frame, drivetrain and front bodywork without a factory pickup bed. Its open rear platform can accept a body or equipment selected for the job. Examples include:
- Dump bodies
- Service bodies
- Flatbeds
- Ambulance bodies
That flexibility is the reason to choose a chassis cab rather than a conventional pickup: the rear portion can be configured around the work instead of using a standard pickup bed. The finished truck’s usable capacity depends on the exact truck and upfit; the 2020 report’s headline payload should not be treated as a universal completed-vehicle rating.

What later model years tell buyers
2026 Canadian-market figures
Ford Canada’s 2026 Super Duty Chassis Cab page lists maximum available payload of 15,140 lb and maximum available conventional towing of 20,000 lb. These are Canadian-market, model-year 2026 claims for available configurations, not direct substitutes for the 2020 report’s payload figure. Ratings depend on configuration, so confirm the figures for the exact truck being considered.
2027 Platinum trim announcement
In an update dated March 10, 2026, Ford said Platinum trim would be available on 2027 Super Duty F-350, F-450 and F-550 Chassis Cab models, with leather seating surfaces and SYNC 4. This is a later model-year development; it was not part of the 2020 launch lineup.

How to compare F-350, F-450 and F-550 chassis cabs
The model name alone is not enough to determine whether a truck suits a job. Compare the actual configuration and the body that will be installed, rather than relying on a single maximum figure. Check:
- Model, cab and chassis configuration, model year and market.
- Engine and transmission, including whether the intended equipment needs a PTO.
- Payload and towing ratings for that exact configuration.
- The planned body or equipment—such as a dump, service, flatbed or ambulance body—and its compatibility with the chassis.
- Trim and required features for the work and operating environment.
What the 2020 report said about capability
The report quoted Greg Stout of Ford as saying: “From the 6.2 V-8 to the 7.3L V-8 to the heavy-duty 10-speed, these powertrains are always in the sweet spot of the power band for maximum efficiency and capability in towing and hauling.” The statement is Ford’s promotional characterization as quoted by the report, not an independent test result.
