The evidence does not support a definitive list of five Chinese motorcycles that tried to beat Harley-Davidson at its own game. It does support a more useful distinction: one documented Harley–Qianjiang collaboration, plus Chinese cruiser models that motorcycle journalists have compared with Harley designs. A styling resemblance is not proof of copying, a stated attempt to compete, or commercial success.
Why the “five times” claim needs qualification
To call a bike an attempt to beat Harley-Davidson requires more than a similar silhouette. A defensible example would need evidence of the maker’s intent and a clear account of the model’s design, launch, market availability, and commercial position. The available evidence does not establish a five-model sequence on those terms, nor does it show that any of the bikes below outsold or outperformed Harley-Davidson.
There are, however, three distinct kinds of evidence worth separating: an announced manufacturing partnership, an official Chinese cruiser lineup, and two models that motorcycle publication RideApart compared to Harley-Davidson designs. They are not interchangeable claims.
1. Harley-Davidson and Qianjiang: a real partnership
In 2019, Harley-Davidson announced a plan for a small-displacement motorcycle and engine aimed at improving access to its products in Asia. The company said production would take place at a Qianjiang facility in China, using Harley-Davidson quality standards and testing processes. Harley-Davidson’s announcement describes this as a collaboration—not an unrelated Chinese company copying a Harley.

- 2014 Harley Davidson Sportster Iron 883 Motorcycle Model 1/12 by Maisto 32326
Zhejiang Qianjiang Motorcycle’s company history lists a strategic cooperation with Harley-Davidson in 2019 and the formation of a joint venture in 2021. Qianjiang says it was founded in 1985 and that its portfolio includes QJMOTOR, Benelli, Qianjiang, and electric brands. Those company statements establish the group’s history and brands; they do not demonstrate that every Qianjiang model was designed with Harley-Davidson or competes directly against it. What the X350RA record establishes—and what it does not
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s manufacturer database includes “Harley-Davidson X350RA” in Zhejiang Qianjiang Motorcycle’s makes-and-models record. The NHTSA listing is evidence of a manufacturer database entry. By itself, it does not explain the full division of design responsibility, establish where the motorcycle was sold, or report its commercial performance.

2. QJMOTOR SRV cruisers: an official lineup, not proof of a Harley challenge
QJMOTOR UK groups the SRV 600 V4 and SRV 600 V2 under its “Cruiser” category. The UK catalog confirms those model names and that market’s catalog classification. It does not establish that either bike was intended as a Harley imitation or provide a like-for-like case that it beat Harley on price, performance, or sales. Specifications and availability can differ by market, so the UK listing should not be treated as a global specification sheet.
3. Benda: several cruiser families, but no verified imitation claim
Benda’s official site lists cruiser families including Chinchilla, Dark Flag, Grey Stone, and Napoleon. That supports the narrower point that a Chinese manufacturer offers a range of cruiser models. It does not, on its own, show that Benda intended to copy Harley-Davidson or displace it. A lineup category is not evidence of a design brief or a competitive result.

4. Dayang TMV 450 Timo: a media comparison to American V-twins
RideApart described the Dayang TMV 450 Timo as drawing on American V-twin styling and compared its appearance with the Harley-Davidson Nightster and Indian Scout Bobber. That is the publication’s visual analysis, not a statement from Dayang about the bike’s design intent. RideApart’s coverage of the TMV 450 Timo

RideApart characterized the Xiang Shuai XN650N as an imitation of the Harley-Davidson Sportster 883. That wording belongs to the publication; absent a manufacturer statement or other model-specific evidence, it should not be presented as Xiang Shuai’s own description or as proof of a legal or commercial relationship. What would prove that a Chinese bike actually “beat” Harley?
Similarity in styling can prompt a comparison, but it cannot answer whether one maker beat another. That claim requires comparable evidence tied to the same year and market.
- Intent: a manufacturer statement or credible design documentation that explains the bike’s intended rival or target customer.
- Market and timing: a confirmed launch date and availability in the same geography, rather than a catalog entry from one country standing in for worldwide sales.
- Price and performance: same-market, same-year prices and comparable specifications or independent tests.
- Commercial results: sales or other clearly defined measures that show a competitive outcome.
- Responsibility: clear attribution of who designed, branded, and manufactured the individual motorcycle.
The available material does not provide comparable prices, performance tests, or sales figures for these examples. It therefore cannot establish that a Chinese cruiser beat Harley-Davidson commercially or technically.
