Two Lincoln V-12 sedans are being confused
The title does not identify a year, chassis number, or construction record, so a collector must resolve the identity question before treating any car as a Ford prototype. The Henry Ford’s museum record concerns a 1936 Lincoln Zephyr sedan manufactured by the Lincoln Motor Company division of Ford Motor Company in Detroit. Ford’s historical account describes the Zephyr’s V-12 lineage and separately places the development of the Lincoln Continental prototype near completion in early 1939. Decades later, RM Sotheby’s catalogued two 2002 Lincoln Continental concepts with materially different levels of function.

1936 Lincoln Zephyr: a production luxury sedan, not a prototype
The Zephyr was Lincoln’s streamlined production car. Its 267-cubic-inch L-head V-12 was a special version of Ford’s flathead V-8 converted to twelve cylinders. A surviving Zephyr can be historically important and exceptionally collectible, but the museum-recorded car is evidence of a production model rather than proof that every V-12 Lincoln is a factory prototype.
2002 Lincoln Continental concepts: two separate cars
RM Sotheby’s records two 2002 Lincoln Continental concept cars. One was a semi-functional V-12 sedan. The other was a static display model built as a rolling display with a partial interior and no engine or drivetrain. A complete-looking body, V-12 styling cues, or a concept-car badge therefore cannot establish that a particular example runs, can be registered, or contains the projected powertrain.

What the documented 1936 Zephyr actually was
The Henry Ford identifies its artifact as a 1936 Lincoln Zephyr sedan manufactured in Detroit. The artifact was made in 1935 and is displayed in the museum’s Driving America exhibit. Those dates can look contradictory until the distinction is understood: the museum identifies the model year as 1936 while recording manufacture in 1935.

Ford’s history account attributes the Zephyr’s streamlined form to John Tjaarda and explains that the V-12 grew from the company’s flathead V-8 architecture. That history is important for authentication: a genuine production Zephyr should be evaluated against period Lincoln construction, serial-number practice, body details, and drivetrain evidence rather than marketed as a one-off Continental prototype.
What the 2002 Continental concepts were supposed to be
RM Sotheby’s describes projected production specifications for the 2002 concept as a 6.0-liter DOHC V-12 producing 414 horsepower, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. The projected chassis specification included multi-link independent suspension and four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes. “Projected” is the critical qualification: those figures describe the planned concept or production direction in the catalog, not proof that every surviving display car received those parts.

The available auction record does not identify the current owner or location of either 2002 concept. That absence matters when a seller claims a car is one of the two: ask for a continuous ownership trail and reconcile the physical vehicle with the catalog photographs and descriptions.
Why prototype status changes the purchase decision
A production Zephyr can be approached as a known model with period service practices, while a concept car is an individual artifact. A prototype’s identity, construction method, missing parts, one-off electronics, and restrictions on use can dominate its value. There may be no ordinary parts interchange, no factory repair procedure, and no assumption that a component shown in a brochure was ever fitted.
- Identity risk: A V-12 emblem, custom body, or concept-like interior does not prove factory origin.
- Function risk: A static concept may roll only because it was built for display; it may have no engine, transmission, brakes, or production wiring.
- Documentation risk: Unsupported statements about a factory prototype are claims until maker, show, construction, and ownership records support them.
- Use risk: A car designed for a motor show may not meet road-registration, lighting, braking, emissions, or safety requirements in your jurisdiction.
- Cost risk: Bespoke glass, trim, controls, body panels, and electronic modules can require fabrication rather than catalog replacement.
Buyer’s verification process
Complete these checks before paying a deposit. Treat the inspection as an identity and completeness investigation, not merely a mechanical pre-purchase inspection.

- Record the exact identity. Obtain the maker or show documentation, chassis or construction records where they exist, serial numbers, body numbers, and every prior ownership document. Photograph plates, stampings, welds, fasteners, and distinctive body details. Do not rely on a verbal description such as “Ford V-12 prototype.”
- Match the car to historical records. Compare the vehicle with auction catalog photographs, written descriptions, museum or show records, and invoices. Note changes in paint, glass, wheels, interior, engine, and dashboard. Ask the seller to explain every discrepancy and retain copies of the answers.
- Establish whether it is the semi-functional or static 2002 car. For a claimed 2002 Continental, require documentation that distinguishes the running-capable sedan from the static display model. If the car has no engine or drivetrain, classify it as display-only unless a later installation is fully documented and inspected.
- Inspect the powertrain in person. Confirm that the engine is physically present, identify its manufacturer and casting or fabrication marks, inspect lubrication and cooling systems, and verify that the transmission is connected to the driveline. A projected 6.0-liter DOHC V-12 specification is not evidence that such an engine is installed.
- Test the chassis systems safely. With a specialist, inspect suspension attachment points, steering, hubs, brake hardware, brake lines, tires, fuel system, battery installation, and wiring. A car that starts or moves a few feet is not necessarily safe for road use. Record cold-start behavior, fluid leaks, warning lights, charging voltage, brake pressure, and transmission operation if testing is authorized.
- Inspect bespoke body and interior work. Check panel alignment, corrosion, repairs, composite or aluminum construction, glass availability, seals, seat mounting, instrument function, switchgear, and trim. Compare materials and fasteners with period photographs; replacement work can affect both authenticity and future repair cost.
- Reconcile title and provenance. Trace ownership from the documented sale or factory/show history to the present seller. Confirm that the name on the title or equivalent registration document matches the seller and that there are no liens, export restrictions, salvage annotations, or unresolved customs issues.
- Commission an independent appraisal. Use an appraiser experienced with concept cars or significant classics who is not representing the seller. The report should value the specific identity, completeness, condition, documentation, and legal usability of the car, not an imagined production specification.
How to inspect a claimed Zephyr
Engine and transmission checks
For a car represented as a 1936 Zephyr, compare the engine architecture and external details with the museum-recorded 267-cubic-inch L-head V-12. Verify that the transmission is the expected three-speed manual arrangement and that synchromesh operation on the upper two speeds is plausible for the installed unit. A later engine swap, modern transmission, or undocumented conversion does not automatically make the car undesirable, but it changes originality and value.
Body, chassis, and model-year evidence
Confirm that the body, wheelbase, and major chassis features are consistent with the 1936 model rather than a later Lincoln or a custom body placed on another frame. The 122-inch wheelbase, 202.5-inch overall length, and 3,349-pound museum figures are reference points for the recorded sedan; modifications, replacement bodies, and measurement methods can produce differences. Use period serial-number and production records where available instead of treating dimensions alone as authentication.
Service information
A 1936 Lincoln Zephyr repair or service manual can be a useful physical reference when the vehicle is actually a production Zephyr or when researching that lineage. Confirm the exact year and edition before purchasing, and do not present such a manual as compatible with the 2002 Continental concept. The concept’s bespoke construction and projected specifications require vehicle-specific documentation.

Historical sale prices: context, not a current appraisal
The documented auction results show what two different 2002 concept listings brought at their respective historical sales. They do not establish today’s value for either car or for a third vehicle with similar styling.

Because the cars, dates, condition, completeness, and market circumstances differ, the figures should not be averaged or applied as a price guide. An appraisal should adjust for whether the car is the semi-functional sedan or the static model, what components remain, the quality of any subsequent work, the strength of the title and provenance, and whether the buyer can legally operate or must preserve it as a display artifact.
Questions to put in the purchase file
- Which exact Lincoln is this: a production Zephyr, the semi-functional 2002 Continental concept, or the static 2002 display model?
- What document ties this physical car to a factory, show, museum, or auction record?
- Is the engine installed, and can its identity and condition be independently verified?
- Does the transmission, driveline, braking system, and electrical system function, or is the vehicle only movable as a rolling display?
- Which parts are original, which were fabricated later, and who performed the work?
- Are the title, customs records, ownership chain, and seller identity consistent?
- What restrictions apply to registration, road use, transport, public display, or export?
- Has an independent specialist inspected the car and documented current condition?
- Which historical sale record is being cited, and does it describe this exact vehicle rather than the other concept?
Common identification mistakes
Calling every Lincoln V-12 a prototype
The Zephyr’s V-12 was a production-engine development based on the flathead V-8. Prototype status must be tied to a specific chassis and documentary record, not inferred from the engine layout.

Assuming a concept brochure describes the surviving car
The 2002 Continental’s 414-horsepower, 6.0-liter DOHC V-12 and related chassis details were projected specifications. They should be treated as a design target until the offered car’s components are physically confirmed.
Confusing later Continental concepts
Ford’s 2015 Lincoln Continental concept was a different vehicle and was described with a 3.0-litre EcoBoost V6. Its specification should not be transferred backward to either 2002 concept or to the 1936 Zephyr.
Using an old auction price as a present-day value
A recorded price is evidence of a past transaction under particular conditions. It is not a guarantee of current market value, especially when identity, completeness, condition, and documentation vary.
