What GM announced about the Ingersoll plant
On October 21, 2025, General Motors announced it would end production of its BrightDrop electric delivery vans at CAMI Assembly in Ingersoll, Ontario. GM said the vans would not be moved to another site, while the plant would be assessed for future opportunities. That is a production decision, not an announcement that the facility had permanently closed.
GM attributed the decision to slower-than-expected growth in the commercial electric delivery-van market and said CAMI was operating below capacity. The company also cited broader market and regulatory factors, including the removal of U.S. tax credits, as making the business more difficult. Those are GM’s stated reasons, not an independent finding about the causes of the decision. GM’s October 21, 2025 announcement includes then-GM Canada president and managing director Kristian Aquilina’s statement that ending production was driven by market demand and did not reflect the commitment or skill of CAMI’s workforce.
What Ford reportedly said—and what is not established
A secondary Reddit post quoted Ford as saying, “If they breach the contract, we’re gonna sue them.” The wording is conditional: Ford’s reported threat depended on GM breaching its agreement with Ontario. The quote should be treated cautiously because the available record does not include a primary transcript or a reliable official account of the exchange.

The agreement’s wording and obligations are not established here. Without those terms, it is not possible to determine whether ending BrightDrop production violated the agreement. Nor does the reported threat show that Ontario filed a lawsuit. The available information does not confirm that a court action followed.
What happened to CAMI workers
Unifor reported that 1,050 members worked at the idled CAMI plant in 2026. In its August 30, 2026 ratification notice, the union said the majority of CAMI members were on indefinite layoff. The notice describes the workers’ status at that time; it does not establish a later change in employment or production.

As GM negotiations opened in 2026, Unifor said approximately 30% of its GM members in Canada were on layoff. That broader figure covers the union’s Canadian GM membership, not just CAMI. Unifor and GM Canada said more than 4,600 represented workers were covered in the negotiations. Unifor’s ratification notice gives the union’s account of the agreement and CAMI’s status.
Do the 2026 GM investments include a new Ingersoll assignment?
Unifor said the ratified GM agreements secured more than C$1 billion in investments across Canadian facilities. The union identified a next-generation transmission project at the St. Catharines Propulsion Plant and the return of next-generation Heavy-Duty GMC Sierra production to Oshawa. It did not identify a new product assignment or investment allocation for CAMI; its notice described Ingersoll as idled. The national investment total should not be read as a commitment to restart production at CAMI.

Will GM reopen the Ingersoll plant?
GM said CAMI would be assessed for future opportunities, but the available announcements do not specify a replacement product, a restart date, or a plan to resume vehicle production at the site. Unifor’s latest status located, dated August 30, 2026, described the plant as idled and most of its represented members as on indefinite layoff. That is the status documented on that date, not confirmation of what may have happened afterward.
