Timing-belt work on a Yamaha-powered Ford Taurus SHO starts with identifying the engine. The early SHO uses a 3.0L DOHC V6, while 1993–1995 SHO models use a 3.2L V6. Their access steps, tensioner procedures, and parts fitment are not interchangeable. Set No. 1 cylinder at top dead center (TDC), align the crankshaft and both camshaft marks, install a displacement-specific belt kit, and verify the marks again after turning the engine by hand before attempting to start it.
Identify the SHO engine before ordering parts

Do not identify the engine by body style alone. Confirm the displacement and model year from the vehicle identification information and parts catalog. A belt that physically resembles the old one can still have the wrong tooth count, tensioner design, or seal package.
Timing-belt replacement interval
Gates lists a 60,000-mile recommended replacement interval for the Taurus 3.0L V6 with the SHO engine (Gates, 2014). That figure is the documented interval for the listed 3.0L application, not a universal rule for every SHO.

The retrieved 3.2L service pages describe how to perform the repair but do not publish a separate replacement interval. For a 3.2L, use the exact vehicle’s Ford service literature, maintenance schedule, and operating history to decide when the belt is due. If the belt’s age or mileage cannot be verified, treating it as due is the conservative maintenance decision rather than assuming it is still serviceable.

The 3.2L service-manual tool list is specific because the damper, seal, cover alignment, and hydraulic tensioner all require controlled work. Modern equivalents are acceptable only when they perform the same function safely and fit the engine.

Do not substitute a general puller, pry bar, or improvised damper driver simply because it is available. A tool that loads the wrong part of the damper or cover can distort the component and create a belt-tracking problem.

Replacement parts
Use a vehicle-specific timing-belt kit matched to displacement and model year. Verify the belt tooth count, tensioner design, seals, and included components against the vehicle catalog before opening the engine. Decide in advance whether the job will include the applicable crankshaft seal, cover seals, and tensioner; replacing a contaminated or worn component while the covers are already removed avoids installing a new belt against a leaking or damaged part.
Safety and belt-handling rules
Disconnect the battery before beginning. Support the vehicle securely before working through the right-front wheel and splash-shield area, and keep removed hardware organized by cover and location.
The service information gives an explicit contamination warning: “Do not allow timing belt to come in contact with gasoline, oil, water, coolant or steam.” Keep the belt clean and dry during removal and installation. Do not turn it inside out, twist it, hit it with a hammer, or squeeze it with a screwdriver or other tool.

The hydraulic tensioner stores energy. The service information warns: “USE CAUTION WHEN COMPRESSING TIMING BELT TENSIONER IN VISE TO ENSURE THAT TENSIONER DOES NOT SLIP FROM VISE.” If the engine-specific instructions require compressing it, use a stable vise and controlled pressure; keep hands out of the release path and do not improvise a method that allows the tensioner to spring free.
Replacement procedure
The outline below combines the common sequence shown in the 3.0L and 3.2L service information. Cover and tensioner details differ, so follow the procedure for the confirmed engine when a step calls for a gauge, compression method, installer, or torque value.
- Disconnect power and clear access. Disconnect the battery. Remove the battery, engine roll/support damper, intake crossover or air-inlet components, and accessory drive belts as required by the engine-specific procedure. Label electrical connectors and hoses so they return to their original locations.
- Set the engine to its reference position. Put the transmission in neutral. Turn the engine only in the normal direction of rotation until No. 1 cylinder is at TDC. Confirm that the crankshaft mark and both camshaft marks agree with their indexed marks before loosening the belt. Photographing the aligned marks can provide a useful record, but it does not replace the physical mark check.
- Open the timing-belt area. Raise the vehicle as necessary and remove the right-front wheel and splash shield for access. Remove the crankshaft vibration damper, lower and upper timing covers, belt guide, and tensioner as specified for the engine. Use the listed puller and holding equipment rather than prying on the damper or cover.
- Remove the old belt carefully. Once tension is released, remove the belt without rotating either camshaft independently. Inspect the complete belt path, crankshaft and camshaft sprockets, seals, tensioner, belt guide, and covers. Look for oil or coolant contamination, damaged teeth, abnormal wear, cracked covers, or a tensioner that does not operate smoothly.
- Prepare the replacement belt. Compare the new belt with the removed belt and the catalog information before installation. Keep the belt clean and orient it exactly as directed; never twist it or turn it inside out.
- Install with the timing marks aligned. Place the belt over the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets with the belt and pulley marks aligned. Keep the tension side tight while the tensioner is released or set according to the engine-specific instructions. Slack on the wrong side can move a cam mark when the tensioner takes up the slack.
- Set the tensioner. Use the specified gauge, tensioner tool, or controlled compression procedure for the engine. The 3.2L list includes the Rotunda offset belt-tension gauge and timing-belt tensioner tool; the 3.0L and corrected 1989 sequence may specify a different method. Do not guess at tension from belt feel alone.
- Reinstall covers, seals, and damper. Install the covers and crankshaft seal using the appropriate installers and cover-aligning equipment. Install the vibration damper with the specified procedure and torque values from the applicable service information. Keep the belt free of sealant, oil, coolant, and cleaning fluid.
- Rotate and recheck. Turn the engine by hand through at least two complete crankshaft revolutions. Stop if resistance suddenly increases. Return to the reference position and recheck the crankshaft and both camshaft marks. Confirm belt tracking and tension before any electrical power is reconnected.
- Complete reassembly. Reinstall the accessory belts, intake crossover or air-inlet parts, battery, engine roll/support damper, splash shield, wheel, and all removed fasteners. Check wiring, hoses, grounds, and connectors for routing or pinching problems.
- Start only after the final inspection. Verify that every timing mark, fastener, belt, cover, connector, and support component has been checked. Start the engine and listen for abnormal belt, cover, or tensioner noise. Shut it down immediately if the belt walks, a mark was lost, or an unusual mechanical noise appears.
How to set and verify TDC
Before belt removal
With the transmission in neutral, rotate the crankshaft until the No. 1 cylinder reference is at TDC. The crankshaft mark must line up with its indexed mark, and both camshaft marks must simultaneously line up with their respective indexes. If one cam is off, do not loosen the belt and assume the error will correct itself during installation. Determine whether the engine was previously assembled out of time and restore the documented reference position first.

After belt installation
Keep the tension side tight while setting the tensioner, then rotate the crankshaft by hand through at least two revolutions. Recheck all three timing references at the specified position. A mark that moves by a tooth after hand rotation indicates that belt slack, tensioner setup, or sprocket alignment must be corrected before reassembly is considered complete.

The procedures share the same critical logic—TDC, aligned marks, controlled tension, clean belt handling, and a hand-rotation check—but the physical parts and tensioner instructions must remain engine-specific.

Ford TSB 89-5A-14 states that the 1989 3.0L SHO timing-belt procedure in the shop manual was incorrect and supplies a replacement procedure. For a 1989 car, use the bulletin’s timing-mark and tensioner sequence instead of relying on an uncorrected manual page. This is a model-year exception, not a reason to apply the 1989 sequence to later 3.0L or 3.2L engines.

Common failure points and recovery checks
The marks do not agree before removal
Stop and document the position of the crankshaft and both cams. Do not remove the belt and rotate a cam independently. Establish the correct reference position using the applicable engine procedure before proceeding.
The new belt will not sit correctly
Recheck displacement, model year, tooth count, sprocket seating, and belt orientation. Inspect the guide and sprockets for damage and confirm that the tension side is tight while the tensioner is set.
The belt is contaminated
Because the service information prohibits contact with gasoline, oil, water, coolant, and steam, replace a belt that has been contaminated rather than attempting to wash it in place. Find and repair the leak before installing the replacement.
The tensioner slips during compression
Stop the operation, secure the tensioner correctly, and inspect it for damage. The warning about vise compression means the component must be treated as stored energy; do not continue with an unstable setup.
A mark moves after hand rotation
Do not start the engine. Release tension according to the correct procedure, realign the belt and sprockets, reset the tensioner, and repeat the two-revolution hand check. Investigate belt slack or an incorrectly positioned tensioner before closing the covers.
