No. Ford is not abandoning internal-combustion engines. Its announced strategy keeps gas-powered vehicles and hybrids in the mix alongside extended-range and fully electric vehicles, while narrowing its North American all-electric development focus to a flexible platform for smaller, more affordable models. The plan is a shift in emphasis—not a reversal of electrification.
What Ford’s strategy says about gas engines
Ford says internal-combustion and hybrid vehicles remain important to its business. The company expects internal-combustion vehicle volumes to decline as electric-vehicle adoption grows, but it also anticipates strong U.S. demand for gas and hybrid vehicles in the near future. Ford says it is working to improve the fuel economy and regulatory-emissions performance of its gas powertrains, including through EcoBoost technology. Its current portfolio also includes full and plug-in hybrids (Ford’s 2025 Integrated Sustainability and Financial Report).
That combination matters: Ford’s position is not that gas engines will remain dominant indefinitely, nor that electric vehicles are no longer part of its plans. It is keeping several powertrain types available as it responds to changing demand and directs investment among its vehicle businesses.
Which powertrains Ford plans to offer
| Powertrain | Role in Ford’s announced strategy | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Gas/internal combustion | Continued choice for vehicles including a planned affordable truck and commercial van. | Part of Ford’s current portfolio; new plant production is planned for 2029. |
| Hybrid and plug-in hybrid | Part of the expanded range of options Ford says it intends to offer. | Hybrids are in Ford’s portfolio; broader future availability is a company plan. |
| Extended-range electric | Another planned option in Ford’s mix of powertrains. | Included in the December 2025 strategy announcement. |
| Fully electric | Continues as part of the portfolio, with North American development focused on a flexible platform for smaller, more affordable models. | Ongoing development; Ford’s announcement does not describe an end to EVs. |
Ford’s December 15, 2025 announcement says it plans to expand gas, hybrid and extended-range electric choices, while focusing North American pure-EV development on a flexible platform for smaller, more affordable models (Ford’s December 15, 2025 strategy announcement).

What the 2030 electrified-vehicle forecast means
Ford forecasts that hybrids, extended-range EVs and fully electric vehicles together will account for about 50% of its global volume by 2030. The company gives 17% as the comparable figure for 2025. Both figures refer to those three categories combined; the 2030 forecast does not mean Ford expects half of its global volume to be fully battery-electric vehicles (Ford’s December 15, 2025 strategy announcement).
Ford’s 2026 integrated report summary also says total electrified sales rose 30% in 2025 compared with 2024. That is a company-reported year-over-year change, not proof by itself of a lasting growth trend or a forecast. The summary does not make that figure interchangeable with the forecast’s combined global-volume measure (Ford’s 2026 integrated report summary).

What Ford has announced for trucks and commercial vans
Affordable gas-powered truck
Ford says production of a new affordable gas-powered truck at its Tennessee Truck Plant is planned to begin in 2029. The announcement describes an intended future launch, not a vehicle already in production or a confirmed delivery date for buyers.
Gas- and hybrid-powered commercial van
Ford says a new commercial van with gas and hybrid powertrain options is planned for Ohio Assembly Plant beginning in 2029. The company also says it plans to offer a hybrid or multi-energy powertrain choice on nearly every vehicle by the end of the decade. That is a stated plan, not a guarantee about every model currently on sale or its eventual availability (Ford’s December 15, 2025 strategy announcement).

Why Ford says it is making this shift
Ford president and CEO Jim Farley described the change as “a customer-driven shift” intended to make Ford “stronger, more resilient and more profitable.” He said the company was redeploying capital toward areas it views as higher-return opportunities, including Ford Pro, trucks and vans, hybrids, and battery energy storage. Those statements explain management’s rationale; they are Ford’s judgments about customer demand and returns, not independently established findings (Ford’s December 15, 2025 strategy announcement).
How this fits Ford’s emissions goals
Ford says electrification remains central to its carbon-neutrality goal, while also including lower-emission gas-powered vehicles in its range. A gas vehicle is not zero-emission, and that company framing does not provide a model-by-model comparison of full lifecycle emissions.

Ford’s 2026 integrated report summary says absolute greenhouse-gas emissions from vehicle use were down 40% since 2019. This is Ford’s reported vehicle-use measure; it should not be read as a 40% reduction in manufacturing emissions or in emissions across the full vehicle lifecycle (Ford’s 2026 integrated report summary).

The strategy signals that Ford intends to preserve a wider range of powertrains rather than require every buyer or fleet to move to a full EV. It does not tell a shopper which current model is the best fit: the cited announcements do not supply model-by-model prices, fuel economy, towing capability, charging access or availability. Those details need to be checked for the specific vehicle and market rather than inferred from Ford’s corporate plans.
Quick Recap

- EXPOSED DOHC V8 ARCHITECTURE: This model presents a V8 layout with two angled cylinder banks, four exposed overhead camshafts, dual timing-chain drives, a central intake section, and outward-facing exhaust headers. The open arrangement makes the major mechanical structures easy to identify before and during operation.
- PRECISION METAL CONSTRUCTION: Built from precision-cast and machined components in anodized aluminum and stainless steel. Defined surfaces, exposed fasteners, timing assemblies, and front pulleys reflect key structures found in modern V8 engine architecture while giving the completed model a detailed industrial finish.
- 500+ COMPONENT ASSEMBLY: Build the model from more than 500 labeled components, including precision metal parts, screws, and assembly hardware. Custom foam trays help organize and protect the parts, while the included tool set and full-color manual guide the approximately five-hour assembly process.
- MOTORIZED FOUR-STROKE MOTION: An electric motor concealed inside the starter housing drives the crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons, and valvetrain through a four-stroke mechanical sequence. Viewing openings reveal the internal movement, while the exposed camshafts, timing chains, and belt-driven pulleys show how motion is transferred across the assembled engine.
- MECHANICAL DISPLAY FOR HOME OR OFFICE: Measuring approximately 7.80 × 6.69 × 7.09 inches when assembled, the DM118 combines visible mechanical motion with detailed metal construction. Intended for ages 14 and above, it is suited to model builders, automotive enthusiasts, engineering fans, and hobbyists for display in a home, office, study, studio, or workshop. A metal gift box is included.
