Choose the Volkswagen Amarok if its published price, automatic 4MOTION system, payload and established trim range fit your work better. On the headline figures, neither is a clear winner: both are advertised with up to 3,500 kg braked towing, while the available fuel and price data are not a matched, same-date comparison.

Ford Ranger MS-RT vs. Volkswagen Amarok: the short answer
- Pick the Ranger MS-RT for design-led appeal: Ford describes it as a motorsport-inspired double-cab pickup with bespoke exterior and interior treatment, 21-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, noise-reducing tyres and a 12-inch SYNC 4 touchscreen.
- Pick the Amarok for a clearly published entry price and work-focused headline capacity: Volkswagen lists a starting price of £48,140 excluding VAT (£57,685 including VAT), payload up to 1,050 kg and towing up to 3,500 kg.
- For power, the MS-RT offers two different stories: the current Ford UK page lists a 3.0-litre V6 EcoBlue diesel with 240 PS and 600 Nm, and also presents a 2.3-litre EcoBoost plug-in hybrid with a 75 kW battery motor, 281 PS and 697 Nm.
- For towing, the headline result is a tie: Ford’s 26MY GB list gives the MS-RT diesel up to 3,500 kg braked towing, and Volkswagen advertises up to 3,500 kg for the Amarok.
- There is no defensible current price winner yet: Volkswagen publishes an Amarok starting price, but the current Ford material available does not provide a usable MS-RT price on the same VAT and equipment basis.
What the Ranger MS-RT is
Ford positions the MS-RT as a high-visibility version of its double-cab Ranger: a commercial pickup with styling intended to look and feel closer to a road-going performance derivative. The manufacturer’s current UK model page highlights bespoke MS-RT design rather than presenting the vehicle as a generic Ranger with an appearance pack.
Diesel powertrain
The listed diesel is a 3.0-litre V6 EcoBlue producing 240 PS and 600 Nm. Ford’s 26MY GB price-list result, effective from 16 July 2025, gives this MS-RT diesel a WLTP fuel-consumption range of 21.4–30.7 mpg, 277 g/km CO₂ and up to 3,500 kg braked towing. Those are manufacturer figures, not independent real-world test results.

Plug-in-hybrid option shown by Ford
Ford’s current MS-RT page also presents a plug-in-hybrid configuration combining a 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine with a 75 kW battery motor. Ford rates that system at 281 PS and 697 Nm. The page does not establish that every MS-RT trim or model year can be ordered with that powertrain, so ask the dealer to confirm the exact UK specification, lead time and towing limits before treating it as an available build.
Equipment and appearance
The MS-RT specification called out by Ford includes 21-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, noise-reducing tyres, bespoke front and rear aerodynamic details, bespoke seating and a 12-inch SYNC 4 touchscreen. These features explain the MS-RT’s appeal to buyers who want a work vehicle that makes a deliberate visual statement. They do not, by themselves, establish a higher payload, towing rating or lower running cost than another Ranger configuration.
Ford Media Center’s 13 February 2024 launch announcement described the V6 diesel with a 10-speed automatic transmission and full-time e4WD. That is useful launch context, but it is not proof that every current UK MS-RT powertrain or model year has exactly the same equipment. Use the current build sheet or dealer order form for the vehicle you are actually buying.
What the Volkswagen Amarok is
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles presents the Amarok as a double-cab pickup with automatic 4MOTION transmission and a range that includes Style, Dark Label, PanAmericana and Aventura variants. Volkswagen says Dark Label is open for order; availability, standard equipment and pricing should still be checked when you request a quote.
Published work-capacity figures
The current Amarok model page lists payload of up to 1,050 kg, a load length of 1,624 mm and towing capacity of up to 3,500 kg. “Up to” matters: a particular engine, trim, wheel, accessory package, passenger load or trailer specification can reduce the usable figure.

Detailed Style specification
Volkswagen’s technical layer gives detailed dimensions for an Amarok Style 3.0 TDI 240 PS 10-speed automatic. The data are identified as accurate as of October 2024, so do not automatically apply them to every current Amarok trim.

Volkswagen warns that options and accessories can change unladen weight and therefore the payload available to you. If you plan to carry tools, a canopy, a hard top, a tow bar, recovery equipment or several passengers, have the dealer calculate the plated payload for that exact vehicle rather than relying on the model-page maximum.

The comparable diesel outputs are close in headline power because the detailed Amarok example is also a 240 PS 3.0-litre diesel. The MS-RT’s listed 600 Nm gives a specific torque figure; the Amarok source used here does not provide a torque number, so it would be misleading to declare a torque winner.
The PHEV changes the decision rather than simply adding another trim. Its 281 PS and 697 Nm are Ford’s ratings, but the available material does not state an electric-only range, charging time, battery warranty or a current order status for every MS-RT configuration. Those are essential questions if your choice depends on commuting electrically or operating-cost calculations.
Towing: same headline limit, different real-world checks
Both manufacturers advertise a maximum of 3,500 kg for braked towing in the specifications cited here. That means the headline number cannot decide between these pickups.

What to verify before ordering
- Ask for the exact vehicle’s plated maximum trailer weight, not just the model-family maximum.
- Check the permitted nose weight and the tow-bar rating for the fitted equipment.
- Subtract passengers, luggage, tools, canopy, accessories and tow-ball load from the vehicle’s gross vehicle weight and payload.
- Confirm that the trailer’s actual laden weight, axle loads and braking system comply with the limit.
- Check the registration documents and the manufacturer’s latest technical sheet for the specific engine, transmission and wheel package.
A 3,500 kg trailer can consume a substantial portion of the pickup’s payload through nose weight alone. A truck that can legally tow 3,500 kg may therefore be unable to carry its maximum payload at the same time. The dealer should provide a calculation for your trailer and equipment list.

The Amarok has a stated 1,624 mm load length and 1,584 mm load-bed width in the Style technical data. That gives a concrete starting point when you measure pallets, cases, motorcycles or building materials. The same source lists a 12.9 m minimum turning circle, useful when assessing yards, lanes and loading areas.
The cited Ford MS-RT material does not provide matching bed dimensions, turning circle, gross vehicle weight or payload figures. Do not assume that the MS-RT’s 21-inch wheels, styling parts or seats leave its practical carrying capacity unchanged from another Ranger. Request the exact MS-RT specification sheet and weigh any permanent accessories before signing the order.
Questions for a work-use inspection
- Will the items you carry fit between the wheel arches, and can they be secured without contacting the tailgate or styling components?
- Does the quoted payload still cover your normal passengers and tools after the chosen wheels, tow bar, canopy and protection equipment are fitted?
- Can your trailer and reversing routine work with the vehicle’s turning circle and camera or sensor equipment?
- Will the bed length suit your longest regular load without leaving it unsupported or illegally overhanging?
Fuel economy and emissions: do not call a winner from these figures

These numbers are not a clean contemporary head-to-head. Ford supplies a range for the MS-RT diesel, while Volkswagen supplies one figure for a specified Style configuration. The sources also carry different dates and may reflect different equipment or test conditions. WLTP results are laboratory test values; load, weather, speed, tyres, towing and driving style can materially change actual consumption.
For a useful ownership estimate, obtain the exact model’s current WLTP figure, annual mileage and realistic loaded or towing use. Compare fuel cost using the same fuel price and include any difference in tax, insurance, servicing and charging equipment if you are considering the MS-RT PHEV.

Price and what the published figures do—and do not—tell you
Volkswagen’s current UK Amarok page lists a starting price of £48,140 excluding VAT or £57,685 including VAT. The page identifies this as a starting price, so it is not a quotation for every trim, engine or option.
A usable current UK price for the Ranger MS-RT was not exposed in the Ford material cited here. Ford’s 26MY list gives specification information and has an effective date of 16 July 2025; a newer Ranger price-list result effective 5 August 2026 does not expose an MS-RT price in the available details. Consequently, saying that either pickup is cheaper would overstate the evidence.
Request comparable quotes
- Choose the exact trim, engine, transmission and drivetrain for both vehicles.
- Ask each dealer to quote on the same VAT basis: business pricing excluding VAT or private-buyer pricing including VAT.
- Match wheels, tow bar, bed protection, canopy, safety equipment and other options as closely as possible.
- Separate vehicle price, delivery or registration fees, accessories, servicing products and finance charges.
- Record the quote date and the expiry date because commercial-vehicle pricing and offers can change.
Only after this process can you calculate a meaningful purchase-price difference. A lower list price can disappear once the vehicle needs equivalent equipment, while an apparently expensive trim may include items you would otherwise have to add.

Choose the Ranger MS-RT when visual identity matters
The MS-RT is the natural choice if your priority is a distinctive, manufacturer-defined appearance. Its 21-inch wheels, aerodynamic treatment, bespoke seats and SYNC 4 screen are central to the version’s character. It also gives you a choice between the listed 240 PS V6 diesel and the PHEV specification Ford presents. Confirm that your preferred powertrain is orderable in the MS-RT configuration you want.

The Amarok is easier to shortlist when you need a published starting price, a stated 1,050 kg maximum payload, a 1,624 mm load length and automatic 4MOTION in one manufacturer model description. Its Style, Dark Label, PanAmericana and Aventura variants provide different equipment directions, but the detailed dimensions cited here apply specifically to the Style 3.0 TDI automatic and are dated October 2024.

Choose on towing only after checking the plated setup
Because both are advertised at up to 3,500 kg braked towing, select the vehicle that gives you the better payload, nose-weight margin, tow-bar specification and equipment value for your actual trailer. The badge or headline maximum is not enough.
Choose on running cost only with matched data
The published 21.4–30.7 mpg Ford range and 27.4 mpg Amarok figure cannot establish a fuel-cost winner because they describe different stated variants and dates. Add your expected mileage, towing frequency, payload and fuel prices to a matched quote rather than extrapolating from a single WLTP number.
Buyer’s inspection and order checklist
- Powertrain: confirm engine, battery system if applicable, transmission and four-wheel-drive description on the order form.
- Availability: ask whether the exact MS-RT PHEV or diesel specification is currently orderable in the UK and obtain a written delivery estimate.
- Payload: request the plated payload after all factory and dealer-fitted options, then deduct passengers and permanent equipment.
- Towing: verify braked trailer limit, nose weight, tow-bar rating and the trailer’s actual laden mass.
- Dimensions: measure your longest and widest regular loads against the actual bed, including wheel-arch intrusion and tailgate position.

The Ford Ranger MS-RT is the more expressive choice: its purpose-built MS-RT styling and Ford-listed powertrain range appeal to buyers who want a pickup that stands out as well as works. The Volkswagen Amarok is the more straightforward work-led proposition in the available UK material, with a published starting price, automatic 4MOTION, up to 1,050 kg payload and a stated 1,624 mm load length.
Neither wins automatically. Both claim up to 3,500 kg braked towing, and the available fuel figures are not directly comparable. Before ordering, compare exact dealer quotes, VAT treatment, payload after options, bed fit, nose weight and the plated towing limit for your real trailer. That process—not the headline badge or a single brochure number—will identify the right pickup for you.
