Short answer: the Ford Ranger MS-RT and Ranger Wildtrak use the same listed 3.0-litre V6 diesel output in the UK 2027 model year—240 PS, a 10-speed automatic and full-time four-wheel drive. The MS-RT’s distinction is its motorsport-inspired bodywork, 21-inch wheels, bespoke cabin and sports suspension, while the Wildtrak is the more conventional sporty, comfort-oriented Ranger grade. In the listed diesel versions, Wildtrak also has the lower official WLTP consumption and CO₂ rating; towing capacity is the same.
This comparison uses Ford UK’s 27MY specification and technical data effective 5 August 2026. Ranger equipment, engines, taxes and prices vary by country, model year, options and final vehicle configuration, so use the figures below as a UK reference rather than a worldwide specification.

The fundamental difference: character rather than diesel performance
For a like-for-like V6 diesel comparison, neither trim has an output advantage in Ford’s 27MY data. Both are rated at 240 PS and use the same 10-speed automatic and full-time four-wheel-drive layout. Choosing between them is therefore mainly a decision about appearance, cabin treatment, suspension tuning, economy and the exact equipment included on the vehicle you are buying.
MS-RT is the extrovert option. It turns the Ranger into a visually distinctive, road-focused double-cab pickup with bespoke exterior parts and a sportier interior. Wildtrak remains the established sporty Ranger grade: purposeful and well equipped, but without the MS-RT-specific body package and cabin identity. Ford does not establish that every Wildtrak lacks a particular feature fitted to every MS-RT, so compare the current equipment list for the exact model, options and market.
That distinction matters when someone asks whether MS-RT is “better”. It may be the better match for a driver who wants a special-looking truck and accepts the consequences of large wheels and a sportier setup. It is not automatically better for towing, carrying or diesel power, because the headline limits and output are shared in this comparison.
What makes the Ranger MS-RT different?
Motorsport-inspired exterior
Ford’s MS-RT specification is built around a complete visual treatment rather than a simple badge. Listed design elements include an imposing front bumper and splitter, a honeycomb grille, extended wheel arches, sculpted side skirts, cab and ducktail spoilers, an integrated rear diffuser and MS-RT badging. The large 21-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels and noise-reducing tyres are especially conspicuous differences from a normally configured Ranger.
Those parts change the truck’s visual stance and road presence. They do not, by themselves, prove a higher top speed or quicker acceleration. The published diesel power output is the same as the listed Wildtrak’s, and the bodywork is primarily a design and specification package.
The exterior also affects how you should inspect a used or demonstrator vehicle. Look for kerb damage on the exposed wheel faces, marks on the splitter and evidence that the lower body sections have contacted rough ground. Confirm that replacement parts and approved tyre sizes are available for the exact vehicle before assuming ownership costs will match a more conventional Ranger.
Bespoke cabin
Inside, MS-RT has a bespoke steering wheel and sport seats with pronounced bolstering. Ford describes the upholstery as a combination of eco-leather and suede. A 12-inch SYNC 4 touchscreen is also listed on the MS-RT product description. The result is a cabin intended to feel more like a sports-oriented road vehicle than a standard work truck, although it remains a pickup with the practicality and driving position that entails.
Recommended Free Tools
Strong seat bolsters can be welcome on long paved journeys, but check access and comfort for every regular passenger. If the truck is used in workwear, inspect the seat material and floor protection in person; a photographed interior does not tell you how a particular option or accessory has been specified.
Sports suspension
Ford UK’s price list specifically identifies MS-RT sports suspension. That is the mechanical change most relevant to the way the truck feels, separating it from a purely cosmetic conversion. A sportier setup can make a pickup feel more controlled on paved roads, but the effect depends on load, tyre pressures, road surface and the particular wheel and tyre combination. It should not be interpreted as evidence that MS-RT is a faster diesel model in a straight-line performance sense.

Suspension behaviour can change significantly between an unloaded pickup and one carrying tools or a trailer. Ask for a drive over the roads you use most, and test reversing, tight turns and loading access rather than judging the truck only from a short, smooth route.
MS-RT’s own description
Ford and MS-RT describe the model in strongly promotional terms. Dr James Kerr, Design and Engineering Director, says: “Just when you thought the Ford Ranger MS-RT couldn’t get any more iconic, we’ve combined the striking motorsport design with enhancements to deliver the imposing characteristics that our customers love.” That is a brand statement about design intent, not an independent assessment of handling or performance.
What the Wildtrak offers
Wildtrak is Ford’s sporty, comfort-oriented Ranger grade. Its appeal is that it combines the Ranger’s conventional pickup capability with a higher-grade appearance and equipment package, without the MS-RT’s extensive motorsport-style exterior treatment. Buyers who want a truck that can look smart for daily use, carry equipment and tow regularly may prefer its less specialised presentation.
The precise Wildtrak specification depends on model year, engine, cab configuration and options. A current UK price-list equipment table is the correct place to check items such as driver assistance, lighting, interior trim, load-area equipment and optional packs. Do not assume that a feature is universally standard or universally absent simply because it appears on one photographed vehicle.
Wildtrak can therefore be the easier trim to tailor to a mixed-use brief. You can compare the cost and usefulness of individual packs against your needs instead of paying for every element of a distinctive appearance package. That is a purchasing judgement, not a claim that one trim has a universally superior equipment list.
Engine, gearbox and four-wheel drive
The directly comparable UK 27MY diesel entries both use Ford’s 3.0-litre TD EcoBlue V6 diesel, 10-speed automatic transmission and full-time four-wheel drive. Both are rated at 240 PS. This is the key answer to the common question, “Does MS-RT have more power than Wildtrak?”—not in this listed V6 diesel comparison.

The two trims can still feel different because suspension, wheel and tyre specification, equipment weight and driver expectations affect the driving experience. Those factors are not the same as a difference in engine output, and Ford’s published figures do not establish an independent acceleration or handling advantage for either trim.
Torque, gearing and traction control also matter in real use, but the supplied UK table does not provide a trim-by-trim acceleration test. Avoid converting the identical power rating into a promise of identical performance in every situation; load, gradient, tyres and road conditions remain influential.
Fuel economy and CO₂: Wildtrak has the official edge
Ford lists combined WLTP consumption of 8.6 l/100 km for the Wildtrak V6 diesel and 9.2 l/100 km for the MS-RT V6 diesel. The arithmetic difference is 0.6 l/100 km in Wildtrak’s favour. The corresponding CO₂ ratings are 268 g/km and 277 g/km, a 9 g/km difference.

Expressed another way, the MS-RT’s listed figure is 0.6 litres higher for every 100 kilometres in the standardized test. To estimate fuel impact for your own mileage, multiply the difference by annual kilometres divided by 100, then multiply by the diesel price you actually pay. That is only a budgeting method: towing, traffic, weather, payload and wheel choice can make the real gap larger or smaller.

WLTP is a standardized laboratory cycle intended to make vehicles comparable under defined conditions. It does not promise the fuel consumption you will achieve in traffic, at motorway speeds, while towing, with a heavy load or on winter tyres. Wheel size, tyre choice, payload, weather and driving style can all change real-world results.
The CO₂ figures may also matter for company-car or taxation calculations, but the applicable UK rules and rates can change. Use the emissions value for the exact registered vehicle and obtain current tax advice rather than applying a trim-level assumption.
Towing, payload and working capability
Towing
Both listed diesel versions have a 3,500 kg braked towing capacity and a 750 kg unbraked towing capacity. If towing is the deciding factor, the published headline limits do not separate MS-RT from Wildtrak. You must still check the exact vehicle’s plate, tow-bar approval, trailer limits, nose-weight limit and the legal requirements for your licence and use case.
A 3,500 kg headline limit is not the same as permission to load every combination to that figure. The trailer, tow vehicle, axle limits and actual nose weight must remain within their respective legal limits. Ask the dealer to confirm whether the fitted tow equipment is factory or aftermarket and whether its documentation matches the vehicle.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Payload and gross vehicle mass
Ford’s technical table gives a 3,350 kg gross vehicle mass for each listed diesel entry. The published payload is 1,084 kg for Wildtrak and 1,088 kg for MS-RT. These are configuration-specific values, not a guarantee that every truck wearing the trim badge has that usable payload. A factory option, accessory, canopy, bedliner, tow equipment, passengers and cargo all consume payload.
For example, the brochure payload is a starting allowance, not a separate allowance for tools after four passengers have climbed aboard. Add the people, fuel, accessories and cargo together and subtract that total from the certified limit. If the result is close to zero, weigh the loaded vehicle rather than relying on estimates.
Before loading, read the vehicle’s weight plate and paperwork and weigh the truck in the condition in which you intend to use it. A small numerical difference in a brochure should never replace a check of the delivered vehicle’s certified weights.
What about the MS-RT plug-in hybrid?
Ford’s current MS-RT product information describes a plug-in-hybrid powertrain with a 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine, a 75 kW battery motor, 281 PS and 697 Nm. Those figures describe the PHEV specification presented on that product page.

They should not be used to claim a direct Wildtrak-versus-MS-RT PHEV comparison. The UK 27MY price list and its specific model entries determine what is actually orderable in the relevant market, body style and model year. If you are comparing a PHEV, match the exact series, battery and equipment list on both vehicles rather than mixing a product-page headline with a different Wildtrak configuration.
PHEV running costs are especially dependent on charging access, journey length and the proportion of miles driven electrically. Do not compare its headline PS or consumption with the diesel table as though they were the same test and specification.
Which one suits your priorities?
Choose MS-RT if visual distinction is the priority
- You want the Ranger’s most conspicuous road-going appearance, including the bespoke bumpers, grille, arches, spoilers, diffuser and 21-inch wheels.
- You value the MS-RT steering wheel, bolstered eco-leather/suede sports seats and its more deliberately styled cabin.
- You prefer the specification’s sports suspension and accept that the ride, tyre replacement cost and wheel vulnerability may matter more on poor roads.
- You are buying for personal identity and daily-road presence rather than expecting a higher-output diesel engine.
- You can protect the bodywork and wheels from the sites, tracks or kerbs on which the truck will actually operate.
Choose Wildtrak if balanced everyday use matters most
- You want a sporty, comfortable Ranger grade without the full MS-RT styling treatment.
- The lower official WLTP consumption and CO₂ figure in the listed V6 diesel comparison are useful to you.
- You want to select equipment from the current Wildtrak options and packs instead of paying for a highly specific appearance package.
- You use the pickup for mixed commuting, work, carrying and towing and prefer to evaluate the exact truck’s standard equipment and payload.
- You expect frequent rough-road use and want to compare the fitted tyre sidewall and replacement availability carefully.
Choose neither on the badge alone
If your priority is a particular driver-assistance feature, tow-bar arrangement, bed accessory, seat material, infotainment function or load-area configuration, start with the vehicle-by-vehicle equipment table. Trim names are a useful shortcut, but they do not replace checking the model year, engine, cab, options and country specification.
Ride, tyres and practical compromises
MS-RT’s 21-inch wheels, noise-reducing tyres and sports suspension are central to its character, but they also create practical considerations. Large wheels generally leave less sidewall between the rim and the road, so potholes, kerbs and rough tracks deserve more caution. Replacement tyres can also be more expensive or less widely stocked than a smaller factory fitment. Confirm the approved tyre size, load index and winter-tyre options before purchase.

Wildtrak’s exact wheel and tyre combination varies with specification. A truck used on construction sites, farm tracks or frequent unmade roads should be assessed for sidewall protection, ground clearance and repairability, not just appearance. Ask the dealer to identify the fitted tyre and its load rating on the actual vehicle.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Options, accessories and the load bed
Ford’s UK price list includes a Ranger load-box bedliner as a physical accessory category. A bedliner can protect the load area from abrasion and impact, but compatibility depends on model year, bed length, cab and the other accessories already fitted. Confirm the part description and installation requirements for the exact Ranger before ordering; a listing does not establish stock, third-party fit or suitability for every configuration.
The same discipline applies to canopies, covers, steps, tow equipment, liners and electrical accessories. Their mass reduces available payload, and some can affect tailgate operation, sensors or warranty conditions. Have the dealer record fitted accessories and recheck the resulting weights.
When comparing advertised prices, separate the truck’s list price from dealer-fitted accessories, delivery charges, finance interest and any tax treatment. Ford notes that online images and information may not reflect the latest UK specification and that options and accessories can cost extra. A dated, itemised quotation is the only reliable basis for comparing two actual vehicles.

How to compare two actual Rangers correctly
- Match the market and model year. Confirm that both vehicles are UK 27MY examples or identify precisely why one is from another year or country.
- Match the powertrain. Compare V6 diesel with V6 diesel, or PHEV with PHEV. Do not use an MS-RT PHEV headline figure against a diesel Wildtrak.
- Match body and drivetrain. Check cab style, wheelbase, four-wheel-drive system and transmission.
- Read the build specification. Record standard equipment, option packs, wheel and tyre size, suspension specification and any dealer-fitted accessories.
- Check certified weights. Photograph the weight plate and compare the stated gross mass, axle limits, payload and towing limits with your intended load and trailer.
- Inspect vulnerable areas. Examine MS-RT splitters, arches, diffuser, wheel faces and tyre sidewalls, especially on demonstrators or used examples.
- Separate official ratings from ownership experience. Use WLTP for a controlled comparison, then budget for the real conditions in which you drive, including towing and short journeys.
- Confirm current pricing and taxes. Ford warns that online information and images may not reflect the latest UK specification and that options and accessories can cost extra. Obtain a dated, itemised quotation for the exact vehicle.
Verdict: is MS-RT worth choosing over Wildtrak?
MS-RT is worth the premium to a buyer who specifically wants its design, bespoke interior and sports-suspension character. It is not justified by a higher-output V6 diesel engine in the UK 27MY comparison, because both listed diesel trims produce 240 PS and have the same headline towing limits.
Wildtrak is the rational choice when you want a sporty and comfortable Ranger with slightly better official WLTP economy and CO₂ figures, and when the standard equipment and options suit your work and daily-use needs. MS-RT is the emotional, visually distinctive choice; Wildtrak is the more broadly balanced grade. The right answer depends on the exact vehicle specification, not the badge in isolation.
Before signing, drive both on representative roads, price the approved tyres and accessories, check the weight plate and obtain the latest UK order specification. That short process is more useful than assuming a trim name answers every practical question.

Does the Ford Ranger MS-RT have more power than the Wildtrak?
Not in the listed UK 27MY V6 diesel versions. Both use the 3.0-litre TD EcoBlue V6, make 240 PS, and use a 10-speed automatic with full-time four-wheel drive.
Which is more economical, MS-RT or Wildtrak?
Wildtrak has the lower official WLTP figure in this comparison: 8.6 l/100 km versus 9.2 l/100 km for MS-RT. The 0.6 l/100 km difference is a standardized comparison, not a promise of real-world consumption.
Do both Rangers tow 3,500 kg?
Yes. Ford’s listed UK 27MY diesel entries show 3,500 kg braked and 750 kg unbraked towing for both. Confirm the exact vehicle’s tow-bar approval, axle limits and legal combination weights.
What is special about the MS-RT interior?
It has an MS-RT steering wheel, bolstered sports seats with eco-leather and suede upholstery, and a 12-inch SYNC 4 touchscreen listed on Ford’s product description.

It retains pickup capability, but its 21-inch wheels, lower-profile tyres and sports suspension deserve more care around potholes, kerbs and rough tracks. Check tyre load ratings, body clearance and the exact payload before choosing it for demanding work.
What payload do the UK 27MY versions have?
Ford’s listed figures are 1,084 kg for Wildtrak and 1,088 kg for MS-RT, with a 3,350 kg gross vehicle mass for each. Accessories, occupants, fuel and cargo reduce the usable allowance, so verify the delivered vehicle’s weight plate.
Is there an MS-RT plug-in hybrid?
Ford’s current MS-RT information describes a PHEV with a 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine, 75 kW battery motor, 281 PS and 697 Nm. Availability and specification must be checked against the current UK model-year price list; those figures do not establish a matching Wildtrak comparison.
Should I compare prices from online photographs?
No. Ford warns that online images and information may not reflect the latest UK specification and that options and accessories can cost extra. Compare dated, itemised quotations for vehicles with matching model year, engine, cab, wheels, options and accessories.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: choose MS-RT for its distinctive motorsport styling, bespoke cabin and sports suspension; choose Wildtrak for a more conventional sporty Ranger with slightly better official diesel WLTP figures. In the UK 27MY comparison, both deliver 240 PS and 3,500 kg braked towing, so the decision is about specification and use rather than extra engine output.
