What was the Ford Probe V concept?
Probe V was part of Ford’s series of aerodynamic design studies. The 1985 concept was intended to explore the effect of aerodynamic styling on a car’s exterior while confronting the interior limits imposed by ergonomics. It was not a production Ford Probe model. The Christian Science Monitor’s 1985 report covered the concept, while ArtCenter College of Design’s archive documents a student project within the Probe V program.
The ArtCenter record names student team members Carlos Barba, Hiroki Iwamoto, Kurt Kaufman, and Lloyd Walker. That record establishes the existence and focus of a student design exercise; it should not be read as a complete account of who authored every part of Ford’s concept.
How aerodynamic was the 1985 Ford Probe V?
The Christian Science Monitor reported a drag coefficient of 0.137 for Probe V. This is a figure attributed to the newspaper’s contemporary account, not a verified independent measurement or a modern retest. The same report called the car “even more slippery than a jet-fighter aircraft.” That was colorful newspaper language, not a technically controlled comparison between the car and an aircraft.
What design choices show the tradeoffs behind the concept?
The dorsal fin and stability
The contemporary report described a dorsal fin intended to improve stability in high side winds. It illustrates that aerodynamic design is not only about reducing resistance as a vehicle moves forward: designers also have to consider how the shape behaves when wind comes from the side.

Cooling openings and front-end airflow
A smooth exterior alone cannot solve the engineering problem. Air must be managed around and beneath a car, while the engine still needs sufficient cooling. In a 1985 technical paper, Ford engineer Jack Williams explained that smaller, functional grille openings can reduce cooling drag and front lift, with potential benefits for fuel economy and handling. That paper provides general context for Ford’s aerodynamic design work; it is not a test result for Probe V. Read the SAE paper.
Interior packaging and ergonomics
The ArtCenter project description frames Probe V as an exercise in the relationship between aerodynamic exterior styling and interior ergonomics. A car’s outer shape has to coexist with occupant space, visibility, controls, and usable packaging. Ford design manager Walt Gollwitzer put the broader challenge this way: “Everything in design is a tradeoff. Each interesting new idea affects the total design.”

Did the Ford Probe V influence production cars?
Ford design chief Donald F. Kopka said in the contemporary report: “What we learn from Probe V will be adapted to production models in the years ahead.” This documents Ford’s stated intention to apply lessons from the concept. The available accounts do not identify a particular production model or feature as a direct transfer, quantify the concept’s influence, or establish a specific design lineage. It is therefore accurate to say Ford intended Probe V to inform later production work, but not to claim that a named production car inherited a particular feature from it.
