The 2021 shortlist of cars in India priced under ₹10 lakh named the Mahindra XUV300, Tata Altroz, Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki S-Cross, Volkswagen Polo, Tata Tiago and Tigor, Renault Triber, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, and Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. It is a historical list, not a verified guide to cars currently available under that price. Its crash-test ratings also apply to specific tested models and protocols—not automatically to every model year, trim, or later version.
Which nine cars were on the 2021 list?
The August 2021 article framed these nine choices as cars under ₹10 lakh and described them as among India’s safest. The list and price threshold reflect that article’s publication date; they do not establish current prices, availability, or value. The original 2021 list names:
- Mahindra XUV300
- Tata Altroz
- Tata Nexon
- Maruti Suzuki S-Cross
- Volkswagen Polo
- Tata Tiago and Tata Tigor
- Renault Triber
- Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza
- Maruti Suzuki Ertiga
For the crash-test records available for these models, Global NCAP identifies tests of the XUV300 and Altroz in 2020; Nexon and Vitara Brezza in 2018; Polo in 2014; Triber in 2021; and Ertiga in 2019. How to read the ratings
A rating belongs to a tested model and protocol
A star result is evidence about the particular model tested under the applicable program and protocol. It should not be treated as a blanket rating for every year, trim, equipment package, or later version sold under the same name. Before using a historical result to assess a particular car, match the test record to its model, year, market, and specification as closely as possible.

Adult and child protection are separate results
Adult-occupant and child-occupant assessments measure different aspects of occupant protection. One result does not stand in for the other, and neither by itself establishes that a specific child seat will fit or perform as intended in a vehicle.
Protocol scope matters
Global NCAP’s description of its India campaign said that the tests then focused on frontal-crash occupant protection. It also said side-impact, electronic stability control (ESC), and pedestrian assessments would be included in updated protocols from July 2022. A result from the earlier campaign should therefore be understood in the context of its test date and scope, not as a complete assessment under later protocols. Global NCAP’s campaign account says the program completed more than 50 safety assessments between 2014 and 2022.

Does a crash-test result prove “best build quality”?
No. A crash-test rating is not a general measurement or ranking of build quality. The phrase “best build quality” in the 2021 headline is broader than the evidence established by the ratings alone. Crash protection is important, but a star score does not independently compare every aspect of construction, durability, fit and finish, or long-term reliability.
What later results add—and what they do not
Later reporting provides useful context but does not update the full nine-car comparison. Autocar India reported that the Tata Punch scored 16.45 out of 17 for adult occupant protection and received four stars for child occupant protection in 2022; the Punch was not on the 2021 nine-car list. The same report gave the Mahindra XUV300 16.42 out of 17 for adult occupant protection and four stars for child occupant protection. These are attributed figures from Autocar India’s 2022 report, not current prices or a like-for-like rating table covering all nine vehicles.

Mahindra & Mahindra said in a 10 November 2021 release that the XUV700 achieved 16.03 out of 17 for adult occupant protection and 41.66 out of 49 for child occupant protection. The company also said the XUV700 started at ₹12.49 lakh ex-showroom, Pan India, in 2021—above the shortlist’s stated budget. These are manufacturer-reported figures, not a substitute for the nine models’ individual records; the company’s release is available at Mahindra’s announcement.

Do not rely on the 2021 price ceiling to decide what is currently affordable. Check current local prices, available variants, and whether the model is still sold. Then compare the specific version you are considering with the model and protocol identified in the relevant crash-test record. A historical star rating can help frame questions, but it cannot confirm that a present-day vehicle has the same specification or equipment.
