The Ford diesel story began before the Power Stroke name: Ford dates its 6.9L indirect-injection (IDI) V8 to 1982–1993, while the Power Stroke badge arrived with the 7.3L direct-injection turbo diesel for 1994. Since then, the family has progressed through changing turbocharger, fuel-injection and emissions-control technologies. For 2026 Super Duty trucks, Ford lists two versions of the 6.7L V8: standard output at 475 hp and 1,050 lb-ft, and High Output at 500 hp and 1,200 lb-ft.
What is a Ford Power Stroke engine?
Power Stroke is Ford’s name for a family of turbocharged diesel V8 engines used in Super Duty trucks. The broader Ford diesel lineage predates that name: Ford’s history page identifies the 6.9L IDI as a 1982–1993 engine, but places the start of the Power Stroke name with the 1994 7.3L direct-injection generation. Calling the 6.9L IDI a Power Stroke is therefore imprecise.

The engines are related by their role in Ford’s diesel lineup, not by a single unchanged design. Across generations, Ford identifies shifts in injection systems, turbocharging and emissions equipment. Output figures also depend on the engine and model year, so a rating for one generation should not be applied to another.

| Engine | Ford-stated years and naming | Technology highlighted by Ford | Output figures listed by Ford |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6.9L IDI | 1982–1993; part of Ford’s diesel lineage, before the Power Stroke name | Indirect injection; no additional technology detail stated on Ford’s history page | 170 hp and 315 lb-ft; Ford does not give rpm points for these figures on the history page |
| 7.3L Power Stroke | 1994–2003; first generation Ford identifies with the Power Stroke name | All-new turbocharger and direct injection | Not stated on Ford’s history page |
| 6.0L Power Stroke | 2003–2007 | Variable-geometry turbocharger, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), and second-generation fuel injection | Not stated on Ford’s history page |
| 6.4L Power Stroke | 2007–2010 | Twin turbochargers and high-pressure common-rail fuel injection | 350 hp at 3,000 rpm and 650 lb-ft at 2,000 rpm |
| 6.7L Power Stroke | 2011–current model year on Ford’s history page | Ford describes it as designed from scratch and cites glow plugs, a compacted-graphite-iron block, aluminum cylinder heads and piston-cooling jets | See the 2026 Super Duty ratings below; those figures are not ratings for every 6.7L model year |
Dates and specifications in this table are from Ford’s Power Stroke Diesel history page. The 6.0L and 6.4L years overlap at 2003 and 2007 respectively in Ford’s timeline; the dates describe the range Ford assigns to each engine, not a claim that every truck in those calendar years used both.

6.9L IDI: the pre-Power Stroke foundation
Ford’s timeline puts the 6.9L IDI in model years 1982–1993 and lists 170 hp and 315 lb-ft. It belongs in an account of Ford’s diesel lineage, but Ford distinguishes it from the branded Power Stroke generations that followed.
7.3L Power Stroke: the name begins
For 1994–2003, Ford identifies the 7.3L as the first Power Stroke. Its history page highlights direct injection and an all-new turbocharger. Those changes mark a shift in the family’s identity and technology; they do not make the earlier IDI engine a Power Stroke.
6.0L Power Stroke: variable geometry and EGR
Ford dates the 6.0L to 2003–2007 and notes three developments: variable-geometry turbocharging, EGR and an advanced second-generation fuel-injection system. These details establish what Ford says changed, but do not by themselves establish how the engine compares in reliability with other generations.

For the 2007–2010 6.4L, Ford highlights twin turbochargers and high-pressure common-rail fuel injection. Its history page lists 350 hp at 3,000 rpm and 650 lb-ft at 2,000 rpm. Keep the model-year range and rpm points attached to those figures when comparing them with other engines.

6.7L Power Stroke: a new Ford design
Ford dates the 6.7L to 2011 through the current model year on its history page and says it was built from scratch. The features it calls out include glow plugs, a compacted-graphite-iron block, aluminum cylinder heads and piston-cooling jets. The current output figures depend on whether the 2026 engine is standard output or High Output.
2026 Super Duty 6.7L: standard and High Output ratings
| 2026 Super Duty engine | Horsepower | Torque |
|---|---|---|
| 6.7L Power Stroke standard output | 475 hp at 2,600 rpm | 1,050 lb-ft at 1,600 rpm |
| 6.7L Power Stroke High Output | 500 hp at 2,600 rpm | 1,200 lb-ft at 1,600 rpm |
These are Ford’s published 2026 Super Duty specifications. They describe 2026 vehicle configurations, not every 6.7L engine sold since 2011. When quoting a rating, identify both the model year and output version.

6.7L specifications and fuel guidance
Ford’s 6.7L owner-manual specifications page lists 6,651 cm³ displacement, a 15.2:1 compression ratio, firing order 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 and ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel up to B20. These are specifications on the cited 6.7L manual page, not universal specifications for all Power Stroke engines or all vehicle years. Ford cautions that the manual supplied with the specific vehicle is the primary reference because web content may differ by vehicle.
Maintenance and parts fitment
Ford’s 6.0L feature list mentions a top-mounted cartridge oil and fuel filter design, and its Power Stroke support information directs owners to a maintenance schedule and to Ford Parts dealers or distributors. Filter and service-part fitment depends on the exact engine and vehicle application. Before ordering a Ford Power Stroke diesel fuel filter or other part, verify the truck’s model year, engine and application against Ford’s parts information or an authorized parts seller; the history page does not establish a universal filter number.

What the timeline can—and cannot—tell you
Ford’s history is useful for the dates and manufacturer-stated technology associated with each generation. It is not an independent reliability comparison. The cited information does not establish generation-by-generation failure rates, expected service life, a best year to buy or comparative ownership costs. Those judgments require separate, model-year-specific evidence rather than inference from the technology list or output ratings.
