Ford Mustang GT Gen3 Supercar: Why Its 600 Horsepower Demands Respect

The Ford Mustang GT Gen3 is an S650-inspired Supercars race car with a 600-horsepower 5.4-liter Coyote V8, 300-km/h top speed, and 3.4-second 0–100-km/h figure—but it is not a street-legal Mustang GT.

The Ford Mustang GT Gen3 Supercar is a 600-horsepower, 5.4-liter V8 racing machine built for the Repco Supercars Championship—not a street-legal Mustang GT with a few track upgrades. It uses the visual identity of Ford’s S650 Mustang, including recognizable body surfaces, but underneath is a purpose-built competition car engineered around Supercars regulations, homologation, parity testing, and race-team development.

That combination is what makes it compelling. The Gen3 Mustang looks familiar enough to connect with the showroom car, yet its 300-km/h top speed, 3.4-second 0–100-km/h figure, 7,500-rpm engine limit, and race-specific chassis place it firmly in professional motorsport.

The Mustang Gen3’s headline numbers

Supercars publishes the following headline specifications for the Ford Mustang GT Gen3:

Specification Published figure
Engine 5.4-liter Ford Coyote V8
Configuration Quad camshaft, four valves per cylinder, aluminum block
Power 600 horsepower
Cylinders 8
Maximum engine speed 7,500 rpm
Top speed 300 km/h
0–100 km/h 3.4 seconds
Fuel tank 135 liters
Weight 1,350 kg on the current Supercars overview

Ford race-car material lists a 1,335-kg figure, while the current Supercars overview lists 1,350 kg. That discrepancy may reflect a different specification, document revision, or measurement convention, so it is more accurate to use the current Supercars figure and flag the variation than to present both as though they were identical.

The most dependable power claim is simply 600 horsepower. Both the current Supercars specification and Ford’s race-car material use that figure. “600+ horsepower” adds precision that the published information does not establish.

It is a race car, not a high-performance showroom trim

The name can create an easy misunderstanding. The Mustang GT Gen3 is not a production Mustang GT, and its 600-horsepower output should not be attributed to every road-going Mustang GT sold to consumers. It is also not street legal and is not a vehicle a buyer can order through a Ford dealership.

Ford describes the racing engine as production-based, which connects the program to the Coyote V8 identity familiar from Ford performance cars. Supercars specifies the competition engine as a 5.4-liter, quad-cam, four-valves-per-cylinder V8 with an aluminum block. That does not mean the engine is identical to the road-car unit. Race application, component selection, calibration, cooling, exhaust, electronics, and the rest of the competition package are governed by the demands and rules of the championship.

The better description is production-based Coyote V8 in a purpose-built Supercars competition car—not a stock engine dropped into a modified Mustang.

Why 600 horsepower matters in Supercars

Six hundred horsepower is impressive, but the important question is what the car must do with it. The Mustang is not built solely to win a drag race. It has to accelerate out of slow corners, launch effectively, reach high speed on long straights, and remain controllable over road courses and street circuits while carrying a substantial fuel load.

The published figures provide useful scale:

  • 3.4 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h conveys its launch and acceleration capability.
  • 300 km/h indicates the speed environment of the fastest sections of a circuit.
  • 7,500 rpm shows the engine’s high-revving operating range.
  • 135 liters of fuel capacity emphasizes that this is built for sustained competition rather than a short demonstration run.

Those numbers do not, by themselves, determine lap time. Aerodynamic balance, tire performance, braking, gearing, fuel load, circuit layout, suspension setup, race traffic, and driver execution all matter. A car with a strong dyno number can still lose time if it cannot preserve its tires, brake consistently, or produce the right balance through a particular corner.

Why the Gen3 Mustang looks like an S650

Gen3 was introduced as an evolution from Gen2, with Supercars seeking greater road relevance and closer visual links to the manufacturers’ current performance cars. The category emphasizes recognizable body surfaces such as the doors, roof, windows, and bonnet.

That matters because the Mustang Gen3 is not merely a generic racing silhouette wearing a Mustang grille. Its proportions and visible surfaces deliberately connect it to the S650 Mustang that debuted as Ford’s modern production Mustang generation. Fans can identify the road-car family even when the car is carrying the wide bodywork, race aero, livery, and safety equipment required for Supercars competition.

There is a limit to that resemblance, however. The visual relationship should not be mistaken for mechanical sameness. The Gen3 Mustang remains a homologated championship race car with a competition chassis and race-specific systems. Its road relevance is primarily about recognizable design and manufacturer identity, not a claim that the showroom Mustang and the Supercars car share an identical underlying vehicle.

Homologation and parity are central to the car

The Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro were formally homologated for competition in March 2023 after additional validation work. Supercars reported more than 2,200 kilometers of combined VCAT running and testing during the process. The cars also completed more than 70 runs over four days of aerodynamic validation, with teams reporting confidence in the measured equality of downforce and drag at that stage.

This development work explains why the Mustang should not be judged as an isolated engineering exercise. Supercars is a regulated category. The cars have to meet technical requirements and compete within a parity framework intended to prevent one manufacturer’s body shape or engine concept from producing an uncontrolled advantage.

Parity does not make the cars identical. Teams still develop setup, strategy, tire management, pit work, and driver performance. It does mean that published horsepower or body styling should not be treated as the entire competitive story. The Gen3 ruleset is designed to put the manufacturers into a controlled contest where the cars retain recognizable identities while being evaluated as competition platforms.

How the Mustang entered the Gen3 era

The first team-owned Gen3 Ford Mustang was unveiled by Blanchard Racing Team on February 1, 2023. Its BRT001 chassis had already started a testing program at Winton Raceway, with Tim Blanchard and Todd Hazelwood involved in the initial running.

The competitive Gen3 era began at the Thrifty Newcastle 500 on March 10–12, 2023. The first championship race was initially won by Shane van Gisbergen in a Chevrolet Camaro, with Broc Feeney second and Cam Waters the first Mustang home in third in the event’s initial classification. Later result changes mean that this detail should be treated as a historical event with a classification caveat—not as a claim that the Mustang won its first race outright.

That opening also established the central Gen3 rivalry: Ford’s Mustang versus Chevrolet’s Camaro. The contest is more interesting than a simple badge battle because the cars were developed and validated within the same technical framework while retaining different manufacturer identities.

The 2026 context: Mustang, Camaro, and Supra

The current Supercars overview identifies 2026 as the fourth season under Gen3 rules. It also places the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro in a three-manufacturer championship context with the arrival of Toyota’s GR Supra.

  • Red Bull Ampol Racing
  • Shell V-Power Racing Team
  • Tickford Racing
  • Penrite Racing
  • Blanchard Racing Team
  • SCT Motorsport

A Ford Racing wheel-stand specification sheet available in 2026 reported that the Gen3 Mustang had won six of the first seven races of that season. That is a time-sensitive snapshot, not a permanent description of the Mustang’s record. It should be rechecked against the latest official championship standings before publication or whenever this article is updated.

What the Mustang GT Gen3 is—and is not

Not the production Mustang GT

The road-going Mustang GT is a consumer vehicle with its own engine specification, chassis, equipment, safety systems, and legal requirements. The Gen3 car’s 600-horsepower figure belongs to the Supercars competition specification.

Not the Mustang GT3

Ford’s Mustang GT3 is a separate endurance-racing program. It is not the same car as the Mustang Gen3 built for the Repco Supercars Championship. The two share the Mustang name and Ford performance identity, but they serve different racing categories and technical rulebooks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Not the Mustang GTD

The Mustang GTD is a limited-production, road-oriented performance model with its own engine, chassis, and performance claims. It is not a road-legal version of the Supercars Gen3 car.

Not the Ford GT

The Ford GT is another distinct Ford performance and racing program. Its presence in Ford’s broader portfolio does not give it a technical or identity relationship with the Mustang Gen3 beyond the shared Ford brand.

Can you recreate the experience at home?

You cannot reproduce the Gen3 Mustang’s speed, braking loads, or professional race setup in a home office. For readers who want to explore the kind of steering, throttle, and braking inputs associated with high-performance racing, a GT-style sim racing wheel and pedal set is the practical entry point. It is an optional simulation accessory, not a Mustang Gen3 component and not an official Ford or Supercars product.

A sensible setup should be chosen around the intended use: a force-feedback wheel for steering cues, a stable mounting solution, and pedals that allow consistent throttle and brake control. The hardware will not turn a road car into a Supercars machine, but it can provide a more meaningful way to study racing inputs than simply watching acceleration figures on a page.

Why the Mustang earns respect

The Mustang GT Gen3 deserves attention for more than its headline power. Its 600-horsepower Coyote V8 is integrated into a regulated, high-speed championship platform that must balance straight-line performance with cornering, braking, fuel capacity, reliability, aero equality, and race strategy.

At the same time, Gen3 gives the car a recognizable connection to the S650 Mustang. The doors, roof, windows, bonnet, and overall identity make it easier for fans to see the road-car family in the racing machine. But the engineering beneath those familiar surfaces is purpose-built for Supercars competition.

That tension—familiar Mustang design wrapped around a serious professional racing car—is the real reason the Gen3 Mustang demands respect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Ford Mustang GT Gen3 street legal?

No. It is a purpose-built Supercars Championship competition vehicle, not a road-legal production Mustang GT or a dealership model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much power does the Mustang Gen3 Supercar make?

The published specification is 600 horsepower from a 5.4-liter Ford Coyote V8. The engine is described as production-based, but it should not be called identical to the road-going Mustang GT engine.

How fast is the Mustang GT Gen3?

The published figures are a 300-km/h top speed and 3.4 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h. Actual race performance also depends on gearing, aero, tires, braking, fuel load, circuit layout, setup, and driver execution.

Is the Mustang Gen3 the same as the Mustang GT3 or Mustang GTD?

No. The GT3 is a separate endurance-racing car, while the GTD is a separate limited-production road-oriented performance model. Neither is the Repco Supercars Gen3 Mustang.

How much does the Mustang Gen3 weigh?

The current Supercars overview lists 1,350 kg. A Ford Racing wheel-stand specification sheet lists 1,335 kg, so the figure should be treated as document- or specification-dependent rather than presented as an unexplained single universal value.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The Ford Mustang GT Gen3 combines a recognizable S650-based design with a 600-horsepower, 5.4-liter Coyote V8 and a purpose-built Supercars competition package. It looks enough like a Mustang to preserve the road-car connection, but it is engineered and homologated as a serious race car—not a modified street Mustang.
