The most clearly documented Mustang EcoBoost convertible problems are concentrated in the folding roof and, on certain 2024 cars, cold-start engine software. Rear-window-area sag on some 2015–2018 cars can result from broken tension-rod clips; early-build 2015–2017 cars can show wear at the top’s front outer edges; and some 2024 2.3L EcoBoost cars can log P0300 or P0316 during rough cold starts. Each symptom has a different verification method, so identifying the location, model year, build date and diagnostic codes before authorizing work is critical.

These bulletins do not establish a failure rate for every EcoBoost convertible, and none should be treated as proof that all cars in a model year are affected. A car can have a different mechanical, electrical or body problem that produces a similar symptom.

What the symptom looks like
Ford TSB 18-2036, published 6 February 2018, describes a top that sags on one or both sides near the rear glass. The bulletin attributes the condition to broken tension-rod clips. The sag may be visible with the roof raised and can look like a fabric problem even though the failed part is a small retaining clip.

Parts and labor operation listed by Ford
The specified repair uses two tension-rod clips, part number FR3Z-76422B34-A, and one foam block, part number FR3Z-7640380-A. Ford lists a 0.9-hour labor operation for this procedure. That is a labor-time allowance, not a promise of the final invoice: diagnosis, access, parts availability, taxes and unrelated damage can change the total.
How to handle the repair
- Document the position of the sag. Photograph both sides of the roof near the rear window with the top fully raised. Note whether one side or both sides droop and whether the roof latches normally.
- Confirm the vehicle identity. Record the model year and VIN. The bulletin applies to some vehicles, not automatically to every 2015–2018 convertible.
- Request a clip inspection. Tell the repair facility that you want the tension-rod clips checked against Ford TSB 18-2036 and Workshop Manual section 501-10.
- Have the technician replace the specified hardware. The documented procedure calls for two FR3Z-76422B34-A clips and one FR3Z-7640380-A foam block. A technician should confirm that the surrounding rods, fabric and frame are not separately damaged.
- Cycle and inspect the top. After repair, operate the roof through a complete open-and-close cycle while stationary. Check that the rear-window area is even and that no fabric is pinched before driving.
Do not order clips solely from a photograph and assume they will correct every type of sag. A stretched or torn top, bent linkage, damaged rear glass or another broken fastener requires a different diagnosis. Ask the shop to identify the failed component on the estimate.

Which cars may be involved
Ford SSM 46995 says some 2015–2017 Mustang convertibles built on or before 1 February 2017 may develop exterior wear marks or damage near the front outer edges of the convertible top. The build-date cutoff matters: model year alone does not establish applicability.

Inspection and documentation procedure
- Clean only enough to see the surface. Remove loose dirt without aggressively scrubbing the fabric, since additional abrasion can make the original condition harder to evaluate.
- Photograph both front outer edges. Take close and wide images showing the wear’s position relative to the windshield header and side edge. Include the vehicle identification label or another record that ties the photos to the car.
- Check the build date and VIN. A dealer can verify production information and determine whether the vehicle falls within the service-message population.
- Ask for a Ford inspection. Reference SSM 46995 and request a written finding on whether the condition matches the message and whether any warranty or policy coverage remains.
- Do not approve a complete top replacement before that determination. The cited service information does not provide a complete consumer do-it-yourself repair. The correct remedy may depend on the exact damage, coverage and current Ford instructions.
Front-edge wear is a different condition from rear-window sag. A quote that lists a complete roof replacement should explain why clips, alignment, localized reinforcement or another remedy cannot address the observed damage. Coverage decisions depend on the vehicle’s warranty status and inspection; the service message itself is not a universal promise of free replacement.
2024 2.3L EcoBoost rough cold starts and misfire codes
Recognizing the software-related pattern
Ford TSB 23-2314, dated 3 October 2023, covers some 2024 Mustang vehicles with the 2.3L EcoBoost engine. The documented pattern is an illuminated malfunction indicator lamp, diagnostic trouble code P0300 and/or P0316, and rough running during a cold start. P0300 indicates random or multiple-cylinder misfire detection; P0316 is a misfire detected during the first 1,000 revolutions after startup. The codes alone do not prove that software is the cause, because ignition, fuel, compression and air leaks can create the same codes.
What Ford directs a technician to do
For vehicles that meet the bulletin’s conditions, Ford’s remedy is to reprogram the powertrain control module with the latest calibration using the Ford Diagnosis and Repair System (FDRS). TSB procedures are written for trained professionals. FDRS access, a stable programming power supply and the correct vehicle interface are required; an interrupted programming session can create additional faults.

Safe diagnostic sequence
- Capture the evidence before clearing anything. Record the exact codes, freeze-frame data, mileage, outside temperature and whether the roughness disappears as the engine warms.
- Check for other symptoms. A flashing malfunction lamp, severe shaking, fuel smell or loss of power warrants stopping the engine and arranging transport rather than continuing to drive.
- Confirm the vehicle is a 2024 2.3L EcoBoost. The bulletin is not a blanket repair for other engines or model years.
- Ask a Ford-capable facility to check the current PCM calibration. Provide the code printout and request verification against TSB 23-2314.
- Complete the reprogramming only with professional equipment. The technician should maintain battery voltage, follow FDRS prompts and perform the required post-programming checks.
- Recheck the cold start. After the module update, the facility should confirm that the codes do not return and investigate mechanical causes if the roughness or misfire remains.
Do not treat a software bulletin as permission to ignore a real misfire. Continued misfire can damage the catalytic converter, and a fuel-pressure, injector, plug, coil, vacuum or compression fault still needs conventional diagnosis when the calibration is current.
Operating the convertible top without creating new damage
Speed and control requirements
Ford’s 2024 owner manual states that the top operates only while the vehicle is stationary or traveling below 3 mph (5 km/h). Stop completely whenever possible, unlatch the top as instructed, and hold the roof control until the cycle is fully complete. Attempting operation above the limit can interrupt the sequence or leave the roof in an unsecured position.
Before opening or closing
- Empty the top’s stowage compartment. Luggage, tools or loose trim can obstruct the folding mechanism.
- Remove leaves, grit and other debris from the outer surface before the fabric folds into the compartment.
- Keep objects out from behind the rear seat. Ford warns that items in this area can break the rear glass.
- Check that the latch area and roof path are clear. Never force the control when the mechanism is binding.
Drying and storage
Do not store the roof wet. Ford warns that trapped moisture can lead to mold or mildew. If rain begins while the top is open, close it as soon as it is safe to do so, then allow the fabric to dry fully before storing it for an extended period. Cleaning products may help remove dirt or protect fabric, but they cannot repair a broken tension clip, a torn edge or an electronic fault.

Checking recalls before authorizing a repair
Recall coverage is VIN-specific. A model year, engine badge or symptom is not enough to prove that a safety recall applies, and a service bulletin is not the same thing as a recall. Use the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) VIN lookup and Ford’s recall tool, then ask a dealer to confirm whether each applicable campaign is open or completed.
- Locate the VIN. Use the dashboard plate, door-jamb label or registration documents and copy all 17 characters accurately.
- Run both official lookups. Compare the results from NHTSA and Ford because their displays and update timing can differ.
- Separate recalls from service information. Record campaign numbers and descriptions separately from TSB 18-2036, SSM 46995 and TSB 23-2314.
- Call a dealer before paying. Give the VIN and ask whether an open recall repair is available, whether parts are required and whether the work is performed at no charge under the campaign.
- Get completion recorded. Keep the repair order showing the campaign number, date and mileage. If the system says “completed,” ask the dealer to verify that the work was actually performed on this VIN.
An open recall can change the repair decision, but it does not automatically cover a cosmetic top-wear complaint or a misfire that is outside the campaign’s stated condition. Obtain the dealer’s written determination before authorizing unrelated work.

Used-car inspection checklist for an EcoBoost convertible
Roof and body checks
- Operate the roof with the car stationary and listen for clicking, scraping or a motor that stops before the cycle ends.
- With the roof raised, inspect both sides beside the rear glass for uneven tension or sag.
- Examine the front outer edges for abrasion, shiny wear marks, frayed threads or exposed backing, especially on an early-build 2015–2017 car.
- Inspect the rear glass and its perimeter for cracks or signs that an object was stored behind the rear seat.
- Look inside the stowage compartment for water, leaves, broken clips or evidence that the roof has been stored wet.
Engine and records checks
- Start the engine completely cold and observe the first minute of operation. A warm demonstration can hide a cold-start complaint.
- Scan for current, pending and history codes; record P0300 or P0316 rather than accepting a recently cleared scan as proof of repair.
- Check the build date, VIN and service records against the applicable Ford information.
- Run the VIN through NHTSA and Ford recall tools and ask for dealer confirmation of completion.
- Require a written estimate that identifies the failed part, bulletin or campaign, labor time and any diagnostic charge.
How to evaluate a repair estimate
A useful estimate distinguishes diagnosis from the corrective operation. For a rear sag complaint, it should state whether the tension-rod clips were broken and list the two FR3Z-76422B34-A clips and one FR3Z-7640380-A foam block if the bulletin procedure applies. The 0.9-hour figure is Ford’s listed operation time, not necessarily the shop’s total billed time.

For front-edge wear, the estimate should include the inspection result, build-date/VIN applicability and warranty decision before listing a complete top. For the 2024 cold-start issue, it should identify the stored codes and PCM calibration check; a facility should not promise that programming will cure the problem without confirming the bulletin conditions.
Ask whether the quoted price includes parts, diagnostic time, programming, post-repair testing and taxes. Keep the old parts or photographs when practical, and retain the final scan report and repair order for future warranty or resale questions.
When to stop driving and seek immediate help
- The malfunction lamp is flashing, the engine is shaking severely or power is dropping during a misfire.
- The roof is partially open, unlatched or blocking visibility.
- The rear glass is cracked or appears loose.
- A roof motor runs continuously, makes a grinding noise or moves the fabric unevenly.
- Water is entering the cabin or standing in the roof compartment.
In these situations, park safely, avoid forcing the mechanism and arrange a Ford-capable inspection. Continuing to cycle a jammed roof can turn a clip or alignment issue into damage to the fabric, frame or glass.

- Verify the vehicle: model year, engine, build date, VIN and diagnostic codes.
- Check recalls first: confirm any open campaign with NHTSA and Ford, then a dealer.
