For a used 2022 Ford Maverick, choose the 2.5-liter Hybrid when fuel economy and light-duty work matter most and front-wheel drive with a 2,000-pound rating meets your needs. Choose the 2.0-liter EcoBoost when you need available all-wheel drive or a verified 4K Tow Package for up to 4,000 pounds. That rule changes in later years: Ford’s 2025 towing guide lists 4K capability for specified Hybrid configurations as well as EcoBoost models, so the truck’s model year, drivetrain, trim and installed equipment matter more than the engine badge alone.
The short answer for used Maverick shoppers
Pick the 2022 Hybrid when
- Your priority is the lowest EPA-rated fuel consumption among the two 2022 powertrains.
- You are comfortable with front-wheel drive only.
- Your trailer, including cargo, stays within the truck’s documented 2,000-pound maximum.
- The specific vehicle has a clear VIN history and completed any applicable recall work.
Pick the 2022 EcoBoost when
- You need all-wheel drive, which was available with the EcoBoost but not the 2022 Hybrid.
- You need more than 2,000 pounds of trailer capacity and the truck has the factory 4K Tow Package.
- You prefer to choose between front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive on the used market.
Use a different rule for later model years
Ford’s 2025 towing information lists 4K-package capability for listed Hybrid and EcoBoost configurations. Therefore, “Hybrid equals 2,000 pounds” is not a rule you can apply to every used Maverick. Verify the build sheet, door labels and vehicle-specific towing information for the exact truck in front of you.

2022 Hybrid and EcoBoost specifications compared
The 2022 figures below are Ford’s listed ratings for that model year. They are not a promise of real-world fuel economy, and towing depends on configuration and equipment.
| Decision factor | 2022 2.5L Hybrid | 2022 2.0L EcoBoost |
|---|---|---|
| Drive configuration | Front-wheel drive | Front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive |
| EPA city fuel economy | 42 mpg | 23 mpg (FWD); 22 mpg (AWD) |
| EPA highway fuel economy | 33 mpg | 30 mpg (FWD); 29 mpg (AWD) |
| EPA combined fuel economy | 37 mpg | 26 mpg (FWD); 25 mpg (AWD) |
| Maximum towing | 2,000 lb | 2,000 lb standard; 4,000 lb with the 4K Tow Package |
Ford publishes these specifications in its 2022 Ford Maverick Technical Specifications. The ratings identify a large efficiency advantage for the Hybrid on paper, while the EcoBoost provides the 2022 drivetrain and package choices that determine all-wheel-drive availability and higher towing capacity.

Read the table as a screening tool, not as a substitute for the truck’s certification labels. A listing can combine a correct engine name with the wrong drivetrain, or advertise a tow rating that belongs to another configuration. Year, engine, drive system, trim and package must all match the same vehicle.
Fuel economy: what the ratings mean for a used buyer
Why the Hybrid’s numbers stand out
Ford’s 2022 ratings put the Hybrid at 42 city, 33 highway and 37 combined mpg. The EcoBoost is rated at 23/30/26 mpg with front-wheel drive and 22/29/25 mpg with all-wheel drive. City-heavy commuting therefore favors the Hybrid most strongly, while highway use narrows the difference somewhat but does not erase it.
EPA figures are standardized estimates. Traffic, temperature, tire pressure, payload, speed, terrain, idling and trailer use can move actual consumption well above or below the published values. Compare the ratings as a consistent model-year benchmark, then use maintenance records and the seller’s documented fuel history to judge a particular truck.
How to estimate your own fuel-cost difference
- Record the asking price, mileage and drivetrain for each candidate.
- Estimate annual miles and divide them between city and highway driving.
- Use the appropriate EPA city, highway or combined rating for each truck rather than mixing ratings from different model years.
- Apply your local fuel price and calculate annual fuel cost for each candidate.
- Add the purchase-price difference and expected maintenance costs to the comparison. A higher purchase price only pays back through fuel savings if your annual miles and local fuel prices make the arithmetic work.
For a simple estimate, annual fuel gallons equal annual miles divided by the applicable mpg figure. Multiply those gallons by your local price per gallon, then compare the two totals. Use the combined rating only when your driving mix is genuinely mixed; a commuter who drives almost entirely in town should examine the city figures as well. Do not count a theoretical fuel saving until you have included immediate repairs, taxes, dealer fees and any financing cost.
No fixed fuel-savings break-even point applies to every used Maverick. It changes with asking prices, mileage, fuel prices, annual driving and the proportion of city travel, so calculate it from the two actual listings you are considering.
Drivetrain choice: front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive
What the 2022 lineup allows
The 2022 Hybrid is front-wheel drive only. A 2022 EcoBoost can be front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, making EcoBoost the route to AWD for that model year. AWD can be valuable on snow-covered roads, steep unpaved driveways, muddy worksites or boat ramps, but it does not remove the need for suitable tires, sensible speed and correct loading.
AWD is a capability requirement, not automatically a quality ranking. If your roads are paved and winter conditions are occasional, the Hybrid’s efficiency may matter more than AWD. If you regularly launch a boat, climb an untreated grade or travel on snow, the traction benefit can outweigh the fuel-economy difference. Base that choice on your actual routes, not on a trim’s marketing description.
Do not infer drivetrain from trim or appearance
Used listings can omit or misstate drivetrain information. Confirm it through the vehicle identification number, factory build record, window sticker, underbody components and the door certification label. A seller’s use of “4×4,” “off-road” or a trim nickname is not a substitute for documentation.

Ask the seller to photograph the VIN and labels before you travel. Compare the VIN with the title and registration, and make sure the engine and drivetrain shown on the build record agree with the physical truck. If the seller will not provide basic documentation, treat AWD or a special package as unverified and do not pay extra for it.
Later-year context
Ford’s current 2026 Maverick performance page shows Hybrid AWD availability and EcoBoost in selected trims. That demonstrates how the lineup evolved; it does not prove that a 2022 or other older used truck has those options. Match every claim to the truck’s model year and installed equipment. See Ford’s Maverick Performance and Specifications page for the current lineup context.
Towing: verify the package before you buy
How the 2022 ratings work
For 2022, Ford lists 2,000 pounds as the Hybrid’s maximum. The EcoBoost is rated for 2,000 pounds in standard form and up to 4,000 pounds with the 4K Tow Package. The higher number belongs to a specific, equipped truck; it is not an automatic EcoBoost rating.
Count the trailer as it will actually travel. Dry weight from a brochure excludes water, fuel, batteries, camping gear, tools and personal items. A trailer that appears to be below the limit when empty can exceed it when loaded. Include the trailer, cargo and accessories when comparing the total with the truck’s documented rating, and account for tongue weight carried by the Maverick’s payload.
What changed in Ford’s 2025 guide
Ford’s 2025 Maverick Towing Information lists 2,000 pounds standard and 4,000 pounds with the 4K Tow Package for listed Hybrid and EcoBoost configurations. The guide says the 4K package is required for trailers over 2,000 pounds and gives a 29-square-foot trailer frontal-area limit without the package and 40 square feet with it.
Frontal area matters because a tall, broad trailer creates more aerodynamic load than a narrow utility trailer of the same weight. Measure the trailer’s forward-facing area, including additions that change its profile, and compare it with Ford’s applicable limit. Do not assume that staying under the weight number alone makes every trailer combination acceptable.
Check the complete towing combination
- Identify the model year, engine, drivetrain and trim.
- Confirm that the 4K Tow Package is installed, not merely advertised as available.
- Read the door-jamb certification labels and any factory tow label.
- Check the trailer’s loaded weight, tongue weight and frontal area, including cargo and accessories.
- Follow the vehicle-specific limits; Ford notes that cargo, passengers, configuration and accessories affect towing limits.
Never use a generic internet listing to justify exceeding the rating on the actual truck. If documentation conflicts, treat the lower verified limit as the safe limit until Ford or a qualified dealer resolves the discrepancy. A receiver hitch added by a previous owner does not by itself create the 4K rating; the factory package and complete vehicle configuration still have to support it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA used-Maverick inspection process
Before scheduling a test drive
- Write down the VIN, model year, trim, engine and drivetrain from the advertisement.
- Ask for a photo of the door labels, the window sticker or build sheet, and proof of any tow package.
- Run the 17-digit VIN through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s recall lookup.
- Request service records, including oil changes, cooling-system work, hybrid-system service and any recall documentation.
- Compare the seller’s mileage and equipment claims with the VIN report and physical truck.
Do this work before negotiating a deposit. A vehicle-history report can reveal title branding, prior damage or odometer discrepancies, but it does not replace the factory build record or an independent mechanical inspection. For a private-party sale, write down the VIN yourself rather than relying only on a copied advertisement.

During the inspection
- Check for warning lights, unusual engine noises, smoke or fuel and oil odors.
- Inspect the hitch receiver, wiring, bumper and underbody for impact or corrosion damage.
- Confirm that all-wheel-drive hardware is present on an advertised AWD EcoBoost.
- Test cold start, braking, steering, climate control, infotainment and every drive mode.
- Look for uneven tire wear, mismatched tires, fluid leaks and signs of overloaded towing.
- Have an independent mechanic inspect the truck before purchase, especially when records are incomplete.
Request a cold start when possible; a truck that is already warm can hide starting noises or warning messages. Check that the instrument cluster completes its normal warning-light test and that no light has been covered or disabled. Inspect the bed, tailgate and hitch area for dents or weld repairs that suggest repeated heavy loading. On an AWD candidate, look for the expected driveline components underneath and have the mechanic confirm operation rather than relying on a badge.
After the drive
Compare the truck’s behavior with its documented configuration. A Hybrid that is represented as AWD, or an EcoBoost advertised for 4,000 pounds without evidence of the 4K package, needs clarification before you negotiate. Put any promised recall or repair work in writing and verify completion with an authorized service facility.
Save copies of the listing, build documents, recall results and the seller’s answers. Those records make it easier to resolve a discrepancy and prevent a verbal promise from becoming an expensive assumption after the sale.

Recall check for specified 2022–2023 Hybrid trucks
On June 6, 2023, NHTSA issued a consumer alert about a recall affecting specified 2022–2023 Mavericks with 2.5-liter HEV or PHEV engines. NHTSA reported 35,501 vehicles in the affected population and described a possible premature engine failure in which engine oil or fuel vapor could collect near ignition sources, potentially causing an under-hood fire, localized melting or smoke. The alert does not mean every Hybrid is affected, and it does not establish whether a particular truck’s repair was completed.
Check the exact VIN in NHTSA’s Consumer Alert: Important Ford and Lincoln Fire Risk Recall information and current recall lookup before buying. Ask the seller for a repair order showing the recall remedy, then confirm the status independently. If an affected truck has not been repaired, do not treat a verbal promise as completion.
NHTSA’s owner instruction is direct: “Owners should pull over safely and shut down their engine if they hear engine noises, lose power, or see or smell smoke.” Follow that instruction and contact the manufacturer or NHTSA if those symptoms occur.
Recall status is VIN-specific. Two apparently identical Mavericks can have different campaign histories because of production dates, prior repairs or ownership records. An open campaign is a reason to pause and obtain an authorized dealer’s remedy information, not a reason to assume that every Hybrid has the same defect.

Compare two actual listings on the same axes
| Axis | What to record | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Model year | Year shown on the title and VIN record | Towing and drivetrain availability changed over time. |
| Powertrain and drivetrain | Hybrid or EcoBoost; FWD or AWD | Determines the relevant fuel-economy and capability ratings. |
| Tow equipment | 4K Tow Package proof and vehicle-specific rating | Separates a standard 2,000-pound truck from an equipped 4,000-pound truck where applicable. |
| Mileage and condition | Odometer, service records, tires, brakes and inspection findings | A well-maintained higher-mileage truck can be a better purchase than a neglected low-mileage example. |
| Recall status | Open or completed campaigns by VIN | Safety work belongs in the purchase decision, not after it. |
| Asking price | Advertised price, fees, taxes and immediate repairs | Determines whether anticipated fuel savings can offset the purchase difference. |
| Driving pattern | Annual miles, city/highway split, winter and unpaved-road use | Shows whether efficiency or AWD capability has greater practical value. |
Use written evidence for each row. If a seller cannot document a package or rating, treat that capability as unverified rather than paying for it. Compare similarly equipped trucks whenever possible; a low advertised price can disappear after adding needed tires, a hitch, repairs or dealer fees.

Which buyer should choose which powertrain?
Urban commuter with occasional home-improvement loads
A documented 2022 Hybrid is usually the logical starting point when most miles are in town and loads stay within its verified rating. Its EPA city figure is the strongest of the 2022 choices, and front-wheel drive may be entirely adequate on paved roads with appropriate tires.
Snow-belt driver who needs traction
For a 2022 truck, focus on an EcoBoost AWD listing. Confirm that AWD is factory-installed and inspect the tires and underbody, since drivetrain hardware cannot compensate for worn or mismatched tires.
Owner towing a heavier small trailer
Start with trucks documented for the 4K Tow Package and verify the trailer’s loaded weight and frontal area. For a 2022 purchase, that search points to EcoBoost. For a 2025 model, Ford’s guide lists qualifying Hybrid configurations too, so check the individual build rather than excluding Hybrid trucks automatically.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Buyer choosing between two similarly priced, similarly equipped trucks
Let the use case break the tie: choose the Hybrid for efficiency when both trucks meet your traction and towing needs; choose EcoBoost for verified AWD or towing capability that the Hybrid candidate cannot provide. Condition, records and recall status should outrank an unverified badge or a small difference in advertised equipment.
Driver who rarely tows but carries payload
Do not substitute the tow rating for the truck’s payload information. Passengers, tools and tongue weight all occupy the truck’s available capacity. Read the door label and calculate the complete loaded combination, even when the trailer itself is below 2,000 pounds.
What the available evidence does not establish
The published specifications do not establish a used-market price premium for either powertrain, a universal fuel-savings payback period or a long-term reliability winner. Do not assume that one engine is automatically more reliable, cheaper to insure or less expensive to maintain without records and local quotes. Those questions require the two actual vehicles, their histories and your costs.
Likewise, a newer model year’s towing capability cannot be retroactively assigned to an older truck. The only defensible rating is the one supported by that vehicle’s year, build data, labels and applicable Ford towing information.
Final purchase checklist
- Model year and VIN match the advertisement and title.
- Engine and drivetrain are verified, not inferred from trim language.
- EPA comparison uses the correct year and drivetrain rating.
- Trailer weight, tongue weight and frontal area fit the documented limits.
- 4K Tow Package is confirmed when a 4,000-pound rating is required.
- Door labels, build records and service history are consistent.
- NHTSA VIN lookup shows recall status, with completed repairs documented.
- An independent inspection finds no unresolved mechanical, structural or flood damage.
- Asking price, expected repairs, fuel costs and annual mileage make sense together.
The best used Maverick is not defined by Hybrid or EcoBoost in isolation. It is the specific truck whose verified drivetrain, tow equipment, condition and recall status fit the work you actually do.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the 2022 Ford Maverick Hybrid available with all-wheel drive?
No. Ford’s 2022 specifications list the 2.5-liter Hybrid with front-wheel drive only. A 2022 EcoBoost can be FWD or AWD. Later model years changed the lineup, so verify the year and VIN rather than applying the 2022 rule to every used Maverick.
How much can a 2022 Maverick Hybrid tow?
Ford lists a 2,000-pound maximum for the 2022 Hybrid. Confirm the exact truck’s labels and vehicle-specific information, and include the loaded trailer, cargo, passengers and accessories in your calculation.
Can a 2022 EcoBoost tow 4,000 pounds?
Yes, but only when the truck has the factory 4K Tow Package. Standard 2022 EcoBoost capability is listed at 2,000 pounds. An aftermarket hitch or an online listing alone does not prove the 4,000-pound rating.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteDoes every 2025 Maverick Hybrid tow 4,000 pounds?
No. Ford’s 2025 towing guide lists 4K-package capability for specified Hybrid and EcoBoost configurations. The package, drivetrain, trim, cargo, passengers, accessories and trailer limits still have to match the individual vehicle.
What are the 2022 Maverick fuel-economy ratings?
The Hybrid is rated at 42 city, 33 highway and 37 combined mpg. EcoBoost is rated at 23/30/26 mpg with FWD and 22/29/25 mpg with AWD. These are Ford’s model-year ratings, not guaranteed real-world results.
How do I check a used Maverick for recalls?
Use the truck’s 17-digit VIN in NHTSA’s current recall lookup and request the seller’s repair records. NHTSA’s June 6, 2023 alert covered specified 2022–2023 Mavericks with 2.5-liter HEV or PHEV engines and reported 35,501 affected vehicles; the alert does not mean every Hybrid is affected or that repairs are complete.
What should I do if a Maverick makes unusual noises or smells of smoke?
NHTSA instructs owners to pull over safely and shut down the engine if they hear engine noises, lose power, or see or smell smoke. Do not continue driving until the issue is evaluated.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Is the Hybrid always the cheaper used Maverick to own?
Not necessarily. The available specifications do not establish a universal used-price premium, fuel-payback period or reliability winner. Compare the actual asking prices, mileage, condition, local fuel costs, annual miles, records and immediate repairs.
The Bottom Line
For a 2022 used Maverick, the Hybrid is the efficiency choice when FWD and 2,000-pound towing are enough. EcoBoost is the capability choice when you need factory AWD or a documented 4K Tow Package. For 2025 and newer trucks, check the specific build because Ford lists 4K capability for qualifying Hybrid configurations too. Verify the VIN, labels, package, trailer limits, condition and recall status before paying for either powertrain.
