The Mustang GTD Competition lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 6:40.835, Ford announced on 17 April 2026. That is quicker than the original Mustang GTD’s 6:52.072 lap from 2025—but the Competition’s time is listed in the pre-production/prototype class, not the production-car category. It is Ford’s new fastest Mustang lap, with an important class distinction.
How fast was the Mustang GTD Competition?
Ford says the GTD Competition completed the Nordschleife in 6:40.835, with Ford Racing and Multimatic factory driver Dirk Müller at the wheel. Ford places the time sixth on the circuit’s Pre-Production / Prototype Class leaderboard. Ford’s 17 April 2026 announcement is the source for the result and classification.
Ford also reports a 6:49.337 lap by engineer Steve Thompson in the GTD Competition. That is quicker than the original GTD’s 2025 production-car time, though it is still a separate Competition-class result.
How does it compare with the original Mustang GTD?
The original GTD improved its Nordschleife time across two attempts. Ford reported its first officially certified sub-seven-minute lap in December 2024, then announced a faster result in 2025.

| Mustang GTD Competition, 2026 | 6:40.835 | Pre-Production / Prototype Class; Ford announcement, 17 April 2026. Ford |
| Original Mustang GTD, 2025 | 6:52.072 | Production GTD lap; Ford update, May 2025. Ford |
| Original Mustang GTD, 2024 | 6:57.685 | First officially certified sub-seven-minute GTD lap; Ford announcement, 10 December 2024. Ford |
The Competition’s 6:40.835 is 11.237 seconds faster than the original GTD’s 2025 time. That is a comparison between Ford-reported laps, not a like-for-like production-class record comparison: the two cars are listed in different categories.
Why is the GTD Competition quicker?
Ford describes a package of changes aimed at power, aerodynamic performance, grip and weight. It says hardware updates and aggressive tuning target output above the original GTD’s 815 horsepower, but does not give a final Competition horsepower figure or a weight-saving total in its record announcement.

For context, Ford’s September 2024 specification release lists the original GTD with a supercharged 5.2-litre V8 producing 815 hp and 664 lb-ft, plus a stated top speed of 202 mph. Those are original-GTD specifications, not confirmed Competition figures. Ford’s original GTD specification release.
Does this make it the fastest production Mustang?
Not on the evidence of this lap. Ford lists the GTD Competition result in the pre-production/prototype class, whereas the original GTD’s 6:52.072 is the production-car comparison. “Fastest Mustang ever” is accurate as a shorthand for the quickest Ford-reported Mustang Nordschleife lap in this comparison. It becomes misleading if used to claim a new production-car record without disclosing the Competition’s class. Lap times are most useful when the car’s classification and configuration are stated alongside the number.
