GM’s 6.2L V8 recall has drawn two new forms of scrutiny: a federal inquiry into reports of engine failures after recall service and a class-action complaint alleging defects and consumer-protection violations. Neither development proves that GM’s remedy failed. NHTSA’s inquiry began after it received 36 owner questionnaires alleging post-remedy failures, while the lawsuit’s claims remain allegations.
Why the recall story got worse for GM
The developments are separate. On January 16, 2026, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Office of Defects Investigation opened Recall Query RQ26001 to assess the adequacy of GM’s remedy for Recall 25V-274. Its opening resume says the agency had received 36 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires alleging engine failure after the remedy. The reports included allegations involving vehicles that received an oil-change remedy and vehicles that received an engine replacement. NHTSA listed a population of 597,571 vehicles for the query. NHTSA’s opening resume for RQ26001 is an opening snapshot; it does not establish that the remedy failed or state a later disposition.
Separately, a class-action complaint filed in Powell v. General Motors, No. 2:25-cv-10479, alleges bearing failures, sudden loss of power, and consumer-protection violations. The complaint was filed February 18, 2025, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. These are plaintiffs’ claims, not court findings. SlashGear reported that 11 suits were consolidated into Powell, but a current court docket status is not established here. The filed complaint and SlashGear’s reporting address different parts of the story.
Which vehicles and engines are covered?
GM’s recall filing identifies certain 2021–2024 model-year vehicles equipped with the L87 6.2L V8: Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV; Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, and Tahoe; and GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL. The suspect engine production window in GM’s report is March 1, 2021, through May 31, 2024. Model year or model name alone does not determine coverage: eligibility is specific to the vehicle identification number (VIN). GM’s NHTSA recall filing describes the affected population and reported defect.

Is my GM 6.2L V8 included in the recall?
Check the VIN rather than inferring eligibility from the vehicle’s year or badge. Enter it in NHTSA’s recall lookup to see whether a recall is open or its remedy is recorded as completed. For vehicle-specific instructions or questions about the remedy, contact a GM-authorized dealer.
What defect did GM report?
GM told NHTSA that connecting-rod and/or crankshaft components could have manufacturing defects, potentially causing engine damage or failure and loss of propulsion. The manufacturer’s investigation findings included rod-bearing damage associated with sediment and crankshafts outside dimensional or surface-finish specifications. These are findings reported by GM in its recall filing, not a conclusion from the later NHTSA query.

GM’s filing states: “If the engine fails during vehicle operation, the vehicle will lose propulsion, increasing the risk of a crash.” The filing also reported 28,102 U.S. field complaints or incidents potentially related to L87 crankshaft, connecting-rod, or bearing failure, including 14,332 reports alleging loss of propulsion. GM also listed 12 potentially related alleged crashes and 12 potentially related alleged injuries, characterizing the injuries as minor or non-physical and most as not crash-related. These are figures reported by GM for the period described in its 2025 filing, not current NHTSA totals.
What is the L87 engine recall fix?
The remedy is not a universal oil change. GM’s filing describes a dealer inspection followed, as necessary, by engine repair or replacement. Vehicles that pass inspection receive higher-viscosity oil; the filing specifies 0W-40 full synthetic motor oil as part of that remedy. The applicable branch depends on the inspection and the vehicle’s VIN, so owners should follow dealer instructions rather than treating an oil purchase or a DIY oil change as a recall repair.

- If you are unsure what was done: confirm the VIN’s recall status and ask a GM-authorized dealer to verify the service record and next steps.
Can an engine fail after the recall repair?
NHTSA’s 36 opening-stage questionnaires allege that engines failed after recall service, including after both oil-change and engine-replacement remedies. The reports prompted the agency to examine whether the recall remedy is adequate; they do not show that every repaired vehicle is at risk, establish the cause of each reported failure, or determine how often failures occur among the listed population. NHTSA’s opening resume recorded zero crashes, fires, injuries, and fatalities among those 36 reports. Those counts describe only the reports in that opening resume, not all incidents or later reports.
If your vehicle has an open recall, has received recall work, or develops symptoms you are concerned about, contact a GM-authorized dealer and describe the issue. Do not assume that a particular oil, inspection, or prior repair applies to every vehicle; ask the dealer to check the VIN and service history.

How to check your VIN and arrange recall service
- Find the 17-character VIN, commonly visible at the base of the windshield or on vehicle registration and insurance documents.
- Open NHTSA’s recall lookup and enter the VIN to check for open recalls and recorded completion.
- If the L87 recall applies, contact a GM-authorized dealer to confirm the required inspection or remedy for that VIN and schedule service.
- Keep the dealer’s service paperwork. If work was completed but the online result does not reflect it, ask the dealer to verify that the recall remedy was recorded correctly.
No product substitutes for VIN confirmation and the required recall service.
