Ford’s GN34 was a genuine mid-engined sports-car programme run by Ford’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) in the 1980s. It produced a running engineering mule, multiple styling proposals and a planned Yamaha-developed V6 production car—but Ford cancelled the project in 1986 before a road car was built.
The Yamaha connection is real, but the usual shorthand is wrong: Yamaha was developing the SHO V6 for the Taurus SHO, not specifically for GN34. Ford later judged that engine suitable for the planned supercar; the running Maya II EM prototype used a twin-turbo Ford V6 because the Yamaha engine was not ready.

What Ford GN34 actually was
GN34 was Ford SVO’s internal programme for a relatively accessible, mid-engined exotic sports car. Development began in late 1983 or early 1984, at a time when Ford was exploring ways to put a serious performance car above its conventional range without creating an entirely separate marque. It was a Ford project, not a third-party fantasy or a production model that disappeared from brochures.
The programme advanced far enough to include a show concept, a functioning engineering mule and a selected production design. That maturity is why GN34 is often described as a “lost” rival to the Honda/Acura NSX. The comparison is useful only as a description of parallel ambitions. GN34 never reached the market, so there was no Ford-versus-NSX sales contest, road test or ownership choice.

MotorTrend’s 2022 account, evo’s 2023 history and The Drive’s 2021 report all place GN34 in this category: a real Ford development programme that stopped before production approval became a finished car.
What “built” means in this story
Ford did not build a customer-ready GN34. “Built” applies to the development hardware: Italdesign’s Maya concept, the Maya II EM engineering mule and the design and powertrain work undertaken around them. The mule could run and was used for evaluation, but it was not the final road-going specification.
From the Maya concept to the GN34 proposal
Italdesign’s 1984 Maya
The project’s visual starting point was Italdesign’s Maya concept. In 1984, the concept was adapted into a Ford-related proposal and shown at the Turin show. It demonstrated the basic idea of a compact, mid-engined exotic that could carry a mainstream Ford identity rather than an Italian badge.

The Maya should not be treated as the final GN34. A concept car communicates a direction; it does not establish the production body, suspension calibration, engine installation or manufacturing plan. Ford and its suppliers continued changing all of those elements after the Turin appearance.

Maya II EM: the running laboratory
In 1985, Italdesign developed the Maya II EM, with “EM” identifying its engineering-mule role. This car gave Ford a physical platform for testing packaging, dynamics and driveline ideas while the production design and engine were still unsettled.
The mule ran a twin-turbo Ford V6. That detail is central to the Yamaha correction: the intended Yamaha V6 was not ready when the prototype needed to operate, so Ford used an available twin-turbo engine for development. Photographs or descriptions of the running mule therefore cannot be read as proof that GN34’s planned production car would have used that exact twin-turbo installation.
Ghia wins the design competition
Ford evaluated competing design alternatives while the engineering work progressed. The Ghia proposal was selected for the intended production car. That selection shows GN34 had moved beyond a single design exercise, but it still did not guarantee tooling, supplier contracts or a launch date. The project remained exposed to Ford’s broader financial and product priorities.

GN34 chronology
| Period | Development milestone | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Late 1983 or early 1984 | Ford SVO starts GN34 development | Ford commits engineering attention to a mid-engined sports-car proposal. |
| 1984 | Italdesign Maya adapted and shown at Turin | The public-facing concept establishes the project’s basic visual and packaging direction. |
| 1985 | Maya II EM engineering mule completed | A running prototype enables testing; it uses a twin-turbo Ford V6 because the Yamaha engine is not ready. |
| 1985 | Ford selects a Ghia design | The production appearance is narrowed from competing proposals, although manufacturing approval is still absent. |
| 1986 | Ford cancels GN34 | The car stops before production, leaving the programme as a prototype and design history. |
The Yamaha SHO V6 connection, stated precisely
Yamaha’s role is often overstated as “Yamaha built an engine for GN34.” The more accurate sequence is different. Yamaha was developing the SHO V6 for Ford’s Taurus SHO programme. As GN34 evolved, Ford considered that engine a suitable powerplant for the planned mid-engined car and incorporated a Yamaha-developed SHO V6 into its production plan.

That distinction matters because it separates the engine’s original mission from its proposed second application. GN34 did not commission the SHO V6 from a blank sheet. The project intended to adapt an engine whose development was already associated with the Taurus SHO, while the Maya II EM mule needed a running engine before that work was complete.
Reported production-engine plan
MotorTrend reports that the planned GN34 engine grew as the car’s projected mass increased. The figures below are development plans reported in 2022, not measured specifications from a production vehicle.
| Item | Reported GN34 plan | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | Yamaha-developed SHO V6 | Planned for the intended production car; not commissioned exclusively for GN34. |
| Displacement | 3.0 litres increasing to 3.6 litres | MotorTrend’s account of changes during development. |
| Output | 227 hp increasing to 280 hp | Reported development targets as the projected vehicle gained mass. |
| Transmission | Close-ratio five-speed transaxle | Planned driveline specification, never validated in a customer production car. |
The numbers describe Ford’s intended engineering direction, not a dyno result that owners could reproduce. Because GN34 was cancelled, there is no final engine calibration, emissions certification, factory warranty specification or independent road test for those figures.

How ambitious was the chassis?
Ford SVO was not merely styling a showpiece. MotorTrend reports that SVO measured contemporary rivals and set GN34 a lateral-acceleration target of 0.95 to 1.00 g. Those values belong to Ford’s period development work as reported by MotorTrend in 2022; they are not modern instrumented tests of GN34.

| GN34 target | 0.95–1.00 g | Ford SVO target reported by MotorTrend, not a completed-car result. |
On Ford’s own stated terms, GN34 was intended to corner harder than the rivals it benchmarked. That does not prove it would have achieved the target: tyre choice, final weight, suspension geometry, aerodynamics and production tolerances were all still subject to development when the programme ended.
GN34 versus the NSX: a comparison of programmes, not products
The “before the NSX” hook works because both projects pursued a mid-engined exotic with a level of usability and engineering discipline beyond the stereotype of an uncompromising Italian supercar. It becomes misleading when it implies that Ford had a completed NSX rival waiting for a market fight.
| Comparison point | Ford GN34 | Honda/Acura NSX |
|---|---|---|
| Development status | Concept, running mule and selected design; cancelled in 1986. | Completed production car and separately developed market programme. |
| Layout | Planned mid-engined sports car. | Production mid-engined sports car. |
| Engine story | Planned Yamaha-developed SHO V6; mule used a twin-turbo Ford V6. | Separate Honda engine and development programme. |
| Badge and positioning | Ford-branded exotic intended to be relatively accessible compared with established supercars. | Honda’s premium Acura-market strategy in North America and Honda branding elsewhere. |
| Outcome | No showroom car, price, final specifications or ownership record. | Reached production as an actual road car. |
Ford’s project therefore belongs in the history of unrealized competitors and near-misses. Calling it “the car that would have beaten the NSX” turns an engineering ambition into a result that never occurred.

The SUV funding choice
evo describes Ford management as choosing between continued sports-car spending and the SUV programme that became the first-generation Explorer. An SUV promised a broader market and a stronger business case than a low-volume mid-engined exotic, making GN34 vulnerable even after substantial engineering work.
Currency pressure and profitability
Classic & Sports Car, as discussed in the period-history coverage summarized by The Drive, highlights a 20 percent devaluation of the dollar against the French franc in 1986. That exchange-rate movement increased the pressure on a project whose profitability was already marginal. Currency exposure could make imported development and manufacturing costs harder to justify even if the vehicle itself was technically promising.
These explanations can coexist. Product strategy determines what Ford wants to fund; exchange rates and projected margins determine what it can afford to fund. The evidence supports a corporate decision shaped by competing priorities and financial pressure, not a single documented failure of the GN34 prototype.
What GN34 tells us about Ford in the 1980s
GN34 reveals an unusual overlap between Ford’s mass-market engineering resources and the visual language of an exotic. SVO could commission outside styling, build a running mid-engine mule and set measurable handling targets while still drawing on Ford engines and corporate manufacturing logic. The programme was ambitious precisely because it tried to make an exotic concept fit inside a large manufacturer’s business.
The project also shows why a working prototype is not the same as a production commitment. GN34 had a public concept, an engineering mule, a selected Ghia design and a proposed powertrain, yet it lacked the final approval that would have funded tooling and launch preparation. Its cancellation was therefore not a last-minute collapse of a finished car; it was the end of a developing programme before the expensive irreversible stages.
The lasting facts, without the myth
- GN34 was a real Ford SVO programme for a mid-engined sports car, begun around 1983–84.
- It evolved through Italdesign’s Maya concept and the Maya II EM running mule before Ford selected a Ghia production proposal.
- The mule’s twin-turbo Ford V6 was a development solution, not proof of the planned production engine.
- The intended production powerplant was a Yamaha-developed SHO V6 related to the Taurus SHO programme, with MotorTrend reporting a development path from 3.0 to 3.6 litres and 227 to 280 hp.
- Ford cancelled GN34 in 1986 before building a customer road car, amid the competing Explorer investment and profitability pressure associated with currency changes.
- Its relationship to the NSX is chronological and thematic: Ford’s unrealized project preceded Honda’s production car, but the two never met as finished market rivals.
That combination—real engineering, a running mule and no production car—is why GN34 remains compelling. It was not an urban legend, and it was not a secret Ford supercar hidden from buyers. It was a serious proposal that reached the prototype stage and then lost a corporate funding decision.
