The North American Ford Fusion is best understood in two generations: 2006–2012 and 2013–2020. Within those spans, major redesigns and refreshes changed its styling, engines, hybrid options and safety technology. Exact equipment varied by market, model year and trim, so a year-by-year comparison should be tied to a specific vehicle.
How many Ford Fusion generations are there?
For the North American midsize sedan, a useful overview divides the Fusion into two generations: 2006–2012 and 2013–2020. Model-year updates and refreshes occurred within each generation; a refresh does not automatically mean a new generation. Ford used different generation numbering in some markets: for example, its Mexican-market announcement called the 2017 Fusion the “fourth generation.” Avoid applying that label to the North American timeline. Ford’s Brazil retrospective and its 2017-model announcement illustrate why market context matters.
First generation: 2006–2012
2006–2008: launch and equipment additions
The Fusion launched in Brazil in 2006 with a 2.3-liter Duratec engine and five-speed automatic in a high-specification SEL configuration. Ford’s Brazil-specific chronology records color and convenience-equipment additions for 2007, followed in 2008 by items including rear parking sensors and tire-pressure monitoring. These details describe the Brazilian lineup and should not be assumed to match U.S. or Canadian cars. Ford Brazil’s 10-year retrospective
2009–2011: revised styling, engines and hybrid
Ford’s Brazil history identifies 2009 as a significant restyling and powertrain update, with new 2.5-liter four-cylinder and 3.0-liter V6 engines. In Brazil, the V6 paired with a six-speed automatic and intelligent all-wheel drive; a front-wheel-drive 3.0-liter V6 version followed in 2011. Ford says the Fusion Hybrid arrived in Brazil in 2010. That launch timing is specific to Brazil, not a claim about when the Hybrid first appeared in every market. Ford Brazil’s retrospective

2012: another major redesign in Brazil
Ford describes a complete renewal for the 2012 Brazilian Fusion, with styling influenced by the Evos concept, new safety and convenience systems, and a 2.0-liter EcoBoost rated at 240 cv in that market. This Brazil-specific milestone sits at the end of the first-generation span used in the North American overview; market launch and model-year timing do not always align exactly. Second generation: 2013–2020
2013–2016: broader powertrain choices
Ford’s Brazilian material describes the 2013 Fusion as a full redesign, with EcoBoost, 2.5 Flex and Hybrid versions. The Brazilian product page lists a 2.0-liter EcoBoost at 240 cv and a six-speed automatic; that rating is not a universal specification for North American versions. In 2014, Ford’s Brazil retrospective records 2.0 EcoBoost configurations with front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. North America also offered Hybrid and plug-in Hybrid Energi versions during this generation, with availability depending on year and market. 2017: major refresh
The 2017 model year brought revised exterior and interior styling, SYNC 3 and additional driver-assistance technology. Ford’s North American lineup included Hybrid and Energi plug-in hybrid models as well as a V6 Sport; feature availability varied by series. Ford’s Mexican-market release described this vehicle as the “fourth generation,” a market-specific label rather than a reason to renumber the two-generation North American overview. 2018: series and engine choices
Ford’s 2018 guide lists S, SE, Titanium, Platinum and V6 Sport series, with gasoline choices including a 2.5-liter engine and EcoBoost four-cylinders. The guide is the better reference for a particular 2018 configuration than a trim name alone: engine and equipment combinations depend on series and build. Ford 2018 Fusion guide

2019: driver-assistance and plug-in changes
Ford highlighted Co-Pilot360 driver-assistance technology as standard on the entry Fusion for 2019 and promoted greater electric range for the plug-in hybrid. Its order guide shows that engines and equipment continued to vary by series, so confirm the specific vehicle’s configuration rather than assuming all 2019 Fusions share the same features. 2020: model-year endpoint in this overview
2020 is the endpoint of the North American model-year range used here. The available Ford owner-manual and model-year references support that range, but do not establish a production-end statement, so this timeline does not claim a specific date or event for the end of production. How to compare two Fusion years or trims
Start with the vehicle’s market and model year, then compare the items that can materially change the car’s powertrain, equipment and history:
- Market: Check whether the car was built for the United States, Canada, Brazil or another country; engines and equipment can differ.
- Powertrain: Distinguish gasoline models from Hybrid and Energi plug-in hybrid versions.
- Engine and drivetrain: Verify the engine and whether the car is front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
- Series and factory equipment: Use the original year-specific guide or vehicle build information; the same trim name does not ensure identical equipment across years or markets.
- Vehicle condition and recalls: Assess the individual car and check open recalls using its VIN through Ford or the relevant national safety authority. A Ford Brazil recall notice, for example, applies to specified vehicles in one campaign and is not a complete recall list. Ford Brazil recall information
