The Ford Free Bird was a compact camper conversion built on the Ford Transit Connect Passenger Wagon—not the full-size Transit. In its 2022 configuration, it seated four and slept two inside, with an optional rooftop tent reported to add room for two more. Launch prices were US$46,550 for the XLT and US$48,990 for the Titanium; those are historical figures, not current quotes. The Transit Connect platform was later discontinued, and current Free Bird availability has not been established.
What was the Ford Free Bird?
Caravan Outfitter converted the long-wheelbase Transit Connect Passenger Wagon into the Free Bird, a small camper intended to retain useful passenger seating while adding a rear sleeping and cooking setup. New Atlas reported the 2022 vehicle at 190 inches long. The conversion removed the third row, leaving four seats, including two rear captain’s chairs.
This was a Transit Connect-based mini-camper, not a conversion of the larger Ford Transit. The distinction matters when comparing dimensions, seating, equipment, or prices: figures for the Free Bird do not describe the full-size Transit camper market.
How many people could the Free Bird seat and sleep?
The reported 2022 layout seated four and provided a standard sleeping place for two. The two rear seats folded down, and a two-piece, three-inch-thick mattress formed a 78-by-47-inch bed. That is a compact sleeping area, so intended occupants should consider its width and length rather than assume it offers the space of a full-size van bed.

The tent was an option, not part of the standard interior sleeping arrangement; its current availability and fitment on any particular Free Bird have not been verified.
What equipment did the 2022 conversion include?
Tailgate kitchen
The rear kitchen slid out at the tailgate. Reported equipment included a portable dual-burner stove, a collapsible sink basin with a water jug, and a 30-liter drawer refrigerator. A removable cutting board could also serve as a table.

A 2024 New Atlas report said the Transit Connect was among the mini-camper donor platforms discontinued, alongside the Nissan NV200 and Mercedes Metris. That makes the Free Bird a historical model based on a discontinued platform; it does not establish that no leftover vehicle or used conversion can be found. Anyone considering one should check directly with Caravan Outfitter and review current vehicle listings before relying on availability, pricing, or rooftop-tent compatibility.

What to check before buying a used Free Bird
- Confirm the exact vehicle and conversion: verify the model year, trim, seating configuration, and which Free Bird components are present.
- Inspect the camper equipment: check the refrigerator, stove, sink setup, mattress, roof fan, outlets, lighting, and battery system in person.
- Verify tent fitment separately: do not assume the reported Skycamp Mini option is included or compatible with a particular vehicle without confirmation.
- Evaluate the donor vehicle: have the Transit Connect inspected and check service history, since the conversion’s historical specifications do not establish the condition or support status of an individual van.
- Compare total purchase cost: use the asking price and the specific vehicle’s condition and included equipment—not the 2022 launch price—as the basis for a present-day decision.
