The Ford Expedition posted a strong 2025, but the available sales figures do not establish it as America’s best-selling full-size SUV—or as the best-selling three-row SUV. Ford reported 85,921 Expeditions sold in 2025, up 10.1% and the model’s best annual result since 2019. In the same report, Ford called the Explorer America’s best-selling three-row SUV. The Expedition’s case is better explained by its full-size passenger and cargo utility, towing capability, and range of trims.
Is the Ford Expedition America’s best-selling full-size SUV?
That ranking is not established by the available figures. Ford’s U.S. full-year report says the Expedition sold 85,921 units in 2025, a 10.1% increase over 2024 and its best annual result since 2019. Ford reported 222,706 Explorer sales and identified the Explorer—not the Expedition—as America’s best-selling three-row SUV. The latest reported period gives a more mixed picture. In the first half of 2026, Ford said Expedition total sales fell 9.8%, citing fleet-order timing. Retail sales rose 13.7% for the half, and second-quarter retail sales rose 15.2%. What makes the Expedition appealing?
The Expedition is a full-size, three-row SUV built around passenger space, cargo flexibility, and towing capability. For 2026, Ford offers the standard-length Expedition and the longer Expedition MAX, with Active, Tremor, Platinum, and King Ranch series. The useful choice is not simply which one is “bigger”: it is whether you want easier-to-manage standard-body dimensions or more cargo room behind the seats.

Ford’s 2026 technical sheet describes a fully boxed high-strength steel frame and high-strength aluminum-alloy body. The lineup uses twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engines, with output depending on version. Ford also lists rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive, plus a Tremor configuration with a 3.73 electronic-locking rear differential. Expedition or Expedition MAX: how much cargo space do you get?
The MAX’s longer body provides more cargo volume at every measured seating position. Ford lists optimized cargo volumes as follows:

Choose based on the space you need with the seats in use: the standard Expedition has 22.9 cubic feet behind the third row, while the MAX has 37.4. How much can a 2026 Expedition tow?
Ford’s listed maximum depends on body length and drivetrain. The 2026 figures are:

What changed for the 2026 model?
Ford’s current lineup page lists Active, Tremor, Platinum, and King Ranch series, along with standard Expedition and Expedition MAX body styles. Ford also lists features and options that depend on trim or package, including a Ford Security Package, available hands-free Open On Approach for the Split Gate on specified trims, second-row device-holder or entertainment-screen options, Marsh Gray paint, and 24-inch Ebony-painted wheels in the Stealth Performance Package. How does it compare with the GMC Yukon?
