But the “75 miles” in the original title needs a model-year qualifier: the 2017 U.S. model was EPA-estimated at 115 miles, while ENERGY STAR lists 76 miles for the 2016 model. Actual range depends on conditions and the individual car.
What does the Focus Electric feel like to drive?
The Focus Electric is a five-seat, front-wheel-drive compact hatchback. Its single-speed automatic delivers electric power without conventional gear changes, and regenerative braking slows the car while recovering energy. Those features make it an electric car, but the basic layout and hatchback packaging are familiar rather than exotic. Descriptions of steering, ride, or acceleration as “ordinary” or “real-car” impressions should be understood as a particular tester’s subjective experience, not a measured specification.
Ford’s 2017 specifications list a 107-kW electric motor, equivalent to 143 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, and an 84-mph top speed. The car uses a 33.5-kWh liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery. It also includes heated front seats, SYNC 3 with navigation, and a supplied 120-volt charging cable.
How far can a Ford Focus Electric go?
For the 2017 model, Ford Motor Company gives an EPA-estimated range of 115 miles. ENERGY STAR’s 2017 vehicle entry also lists 115 miles, with estimates of 126 city miles and 102 highway miles. Its combined efficiency figure is 107 MPGe (118 city and 96 highway) in Ford’s 2017 specifications; ENERGY STAR lists 31 kWh per 100 miles.

The older 2016 model is a meaningful exception: ENERGY STAR lists its electric range at 76 miles. That is close to the title’s “75 miles,” but it is not the 2017 EPA estimate. A 75-mile result from an individual drive could be a test-specific observation; it should not be presented as the official range for every Focus Electric.
Neither an estimate nor a single driver’s result guarantees the distance a used car can cover. Temperature, highway speed, heating or air-conditioning use, route elevation and traffic, and battery age can all affect range. A buyer should consider the likely worst-case trip, not just a favorable displayed estimate.

How long does a Focus Electric take to charge?
The Focus Electric’s combined charging port supports 120-volt AC, 240-volt AC, and DC fast charging. Charging times vary with the power source, vehicle state of charge, and equipment. Ford’s figures and ENERGY STAR’s 2017 entry use different stated scenarios, so treat them as approximate reference points rather than a universal promise.
| Charging scenario | Published time | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Household 120V outlet | About 16 hours | Ford figure for a 230V/10A outlet; actual 120V charging depends on circuit and conditions. |
| 240V home charging | About five hours | Ford figure for a 32A wallbox. |
| 240V charging | Six hours | ENERGY STAR’s 2017 vehicle entry. |
| CCS DC fast charger | About 80% in about 30 minutes | Ford estimate with a qualifying CCS charger rated at 50 kW or more. |
The supplied 120V cable can be useful where a suitable outlet is available, but it is the slow option. A 240V wallbox is better suited to routine overnight charging when installation and household electrical capacity permit. Before relying on public DC fast charging, confirm that the specific car’s charge port and the station connector are compatible and operational.

Does the Focus Electric have CCS fast charging?
Yes. Ford describes a combined charging port that accepts CCS DC fast charging as well as AC charging. Ford’s estimate—about 80 percent in about 30 minutes—applies to a qualifying 50-kW-or-higher CCS charger, not to every charging stop or to the time needed to reach a full battery. Connector, vehicle condition, charger output, and the battery’s starting charge affect the session.
Is the 2017 Focus Electric worth buying used?
It can make sense for a driver whose regular trips fit comfortably within the car’s real-world range and who can charge where the car is parked. Its five seats, hatchback utility, heated front seats, and familiar compact-car format are useful strengths. It is a less flexible choice for frequent long trips, especially when fast-charging availability or the car’s remaining range is uncertain.

Cars.com lists a $29,120 starting MSRP for its 2017 research page; that is a historical new-car figure, not a current used price. Its current consumer-review page shows 80 percent of five reviewers recommending the car. That is a very small sample, not a representative reliability study. One owner review posted in 2024 describes disputes over battery warranty coverage and alleges coolant, contactor, fuse, and gear-drive problems. Those allegations are a reason to check an individual vehicle carefully, not evidence of a fleet-wide failure rate.
What to check before buying
- Battery condition: Ask for a battery state-of-health assessment or other credible diagnostic information, and compare the car’s usable range with the trips you need to make.
- Warranty by VIN: Confirm remaining battery warranty coverage directly for the specific vehicle. Do not assume coverage based only on model year or a seller’s description.
- Charging equipment: Inspect the charge port for damage and test AC charging if possible. Confirm whether the supplied 120V cable is included and functional.
- Service history: Review records for battery, cooling, charging, and drivetrain work; have a qualified EV technician inspect unresolved warnings or repair claims.
- Route fit: Consider seasonal conditions, highway sections, charging access, and a reserve for detours rather than planning around the most optimistic range figure.
Is 75 miles realistic in a Focus Electric?
It is plausible as a particular trip result, and it is close to ENERGY STAR’s 76-mile listing for the 2016 model. It is not the published 2017 range, which Ford and ENERGY STAR put at 115 miles. For a used car, the answer depends on its model year, battery condition, weather, route, speed, and climate-control use. Treat 75 miles as a possible observed outcome—not a universal specification or a guarantee.
