Ford Fairlane 500 vs. Pontiac Tempest: Which Early-1960s Classic Is Right for You?

The Fairlane 500 and 1961 Tempest represent two very different early-1960s choices: Ford’s full-size configuration variety versus Pontiac’s compact Trophy 4 engineering. Learn how to compare the exact year, drivetrain and condition before buying.

The right choice depends first on which Fairlane you mean. A 1960 or 1961 Ford Fairlane 500 is a full-size Ford, while the Fairlane name moved to Ford’s smaller intermediate line for 1962. The 1961 Pontiac Tempest is a compact with an unusual engineering package centered on Pontiac’s 195-cubic-inch Trophy 4 four-cylinder. Compare a specific model year, body, engine, transmission and condition—not badges alone.

Choose the early Fairlane when you want broad engine and configuration choices and the presence of a full-size Ford. Choose the Tempest when its compact dimensions and distinctive four-cylinder drivetrain are the reason you are buying. Neither period specification sheet establishes a modern reliability, repair-cost or parts-supply winner, so the actual car and its documentation matter more than a generic model reputation.

Start by identifying the Fairlane generation

“Fairlane 500” is not one fixed specification across the early 1960s. Ford used Fairlane as a full-size model line in 1960 and 1961, then repositioned the name on a smaller intermediate range beginning in 1962. That change affects the car’s physical scale, likely use and the validity of any comparison with a 1961 Tempest.

1960–1961: the full-size Fairlane

A 1960 or 1961 Fairlane 500 belongs to Ford’s full-size Fairlane era. Hagerty’s cited 1960 Fairlane 500 configuration has a 119-inch wheelbase. That number is useful only when it is attached to the 1960 configuration; it should not be silently applied to every Fairlane wearing a 500 badge.

Engine, trim and body choices vary by year. A car advertised simply as a “Fairlane 500” may have a six-cylinder or V8, different equipment and different documentation from another car with the same name. Before comparing dimensions, performance or value, record the vehicle identification information, model year, body style, engine and transmission.

1962 and later: an intermediate Fairlane

Ford’s 1962 move to the intermediate range is the essential boundary. A 1962-or-later Fairlane is not the same size class as a 1960–61 full-size Fairlane, so it should not be treated as a direct dimensional equivalent of the 1961 Tempest without naming the year and body style. If a listing, appraisal or conversation omits the year, ask for it before drawing any conclusion.

The comparison below uses the cleanest like-period pairing: a 1960–61 full-size Fairlane 500 against the 1961 Tempest. A later Fairlane can still be the car you prefer, but that becomes a different comparison.

Quick comparison: what the period evidence actually shows

Category 1960–61 Ford Fairlane 500 1961 Pontiac Tempest
Model identity Full-size Fairlane in 1960–61; Fairlane becomes an intermediate line in 1962 Compact model introduced for the 1961 model year
Representative wheelbase 119 inches for Hagerty’s cited 1960 Fairlane 500 configuration 112 inches for the 1961 Tempest sedan, according to Pontiac’s fact finder
Engine character Six-cylinder and V8 choices; exact range depends on year and trim 195-cubic-inch Trophy 4 four-cylinder in several output configurations
Documented period outputs 1960: 223-cubic-inch six at 145 hp; 292-cubic-inch V8 at 185 hp; 352-cubic-inch V8 at 235 or 300 hp depending on carburetion. 1961 adds a 390-cubic-inch V8 and small six-cylinder choices. 110, 120, 130, 140 and 155 hp configurations; rating depended on fuel, carburetion and transmission
Best comparison method Match the exact year, engine, body, trim and transmission Match the year, Trophy 4 configuration, transmission and originality

These are period specifications from Ford and Pontiac reference material, not a common road test. The sources do not provide a matched acceleration test, fuel-economy test or present-day ownership survey, so horsepower figures should not be turned into a definitive modern performance ranking.

Ford Fairlane 500: configuration breadth is the main attraction

1960 engine choices

Hagerty’s 1960 Fairlane material lists a 223-cubic-inch inline six rated at 145 hp, a 292-cubic-inch V8 rated at 185 hp, and a 352-cubic-inch V8 rated at either 235 or 300 hp depending on carburetion. The carburetion qualification matters: two 352-equipped cars can carry different period ratings even though the displacement is the same.

Those figures describe available configurations, not a single standard Fairlane 500. When reviewing a car, check the engine markings, carburetor arrangement and supporting records rather than accepting a seller’s shorthand such as “352 car” or “V8 Fairlane.” If the engine has been replaced, the current mechanical specification may no longer match the body, trim or paperwork.

1961 changes

For 1961, the cited Fairlane engine information adds a 390-cubic-inch V8 and includes small six-cylinder choices. The year therefore cannot be represented accurately by repeating the 1960 list. A 1961 car needs its own verification of engine, trim and transmission before you compare it with a Tempest.

The practical advantage of the Fairlane is choice. Buyers can encounter a relatively modest six-cylinder specification or a larger-displacement V8, and those combinations create very different driving characters. The same badge can describe a restrained cruiser, a V8-focused project or a car whose present engine is not original. That variety is useful if you know what you want; it is a source of confusion if you shop by model name alone.

What “more engine” does—and does not—tell you

Displacement and rated horsepower provide a period snapshot, but they do not establish acceleration in a particular car. Vehicle weight, transmission, axle gearing, carburetion, tune and condition all affect how a surviving Fairlane behaves. None of the supplied period sources provides a directly comparable Fairlane-versus-Tempest road test using the same measurement method.

Pontiac Tempest: the Trophy 4 is the defining engineering story

195 cubic inches in four cylinders

Pontiac introduced the Tempest as a compact for 1961. Its signature engine was the 195-cubic-inch Trophy 4, offered in several configurations. Pontiac’s 1961 brochure describes it as a “195 cubic inch displacement, 45° inclined, Indianapolis-type, short stroke, four-cylinder engine.” That is manufacturer promotional wording, so it should be read as Pontiac’s description of the design, not as an independent test conclusion.

The 1961 Pontiac and Tempest fact finder and brochure list 110, 120, 130, 140 and 155 hp versions. The rating depended on fuel, carburetion and transmission. Consequently, “a 155-hp Tempest” and “a 110-hp Tempest” are not interchangeable descriptions of the model; they identify different configurations.

Why the layout matters to a buyer

The Trophy 4 and the Tempest’s unusual powertrain arrangement are the car’s engineering distinction. That makes the Tempest interesting to someone who values mechanical originality, compact packaging and a story that is unlike the usual small-block-V8 narrative. It does not, by itself, prove that the car is faster, more reliable or less expensive to maintain than a Fairlane.

When inspecting a Tempest, identify the exact engine and transmission combination and determine whether the drivetrain is original to the car. A replacement engine, altered carburetion or changed transmission can move the car away from the configuration described in the 1961 literature. Photograph identification markings and retain any invoices that explain changes.

Size and use: full-size Ford versus compact Pontiac

Wheelbase is a useful starting point

The cited 1960 Fairlane 500 configuration has a 119-inch wheelbase. Pontiac’s 1961 fact finder gives the Tempest sedan a 112-inch wheelbase. The seven-inch difference indicates the broad size contrast between these specific examples, but wheelbase is not a complete measurement of exterior length, interior room or turning behavior.

Use the figures as a way to frame expectations, not as a substitute for inspecting the body style you are considering. A Fairlane coupe, sedan or other body configuration can differ from another Fairlane, and the Tempest figure is specifically for the sedan. Verify dimensions for the exact body before planning a garage, transport or restoration project.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the size difference means in practice

A full-size Fairlane is the natural fit for a buyer who wants the visual and physical presence associated with a larger early-1960s Ford. The compact Tempest suits a buyer drawn to a smaller Pontiac and its distinctive mechanical layout. Neither description predicts ride quality, maneuverability or comfort in a particular surviving example; suspension condition, tire choice, seat condition and modifications can dominate those impressions decades later.

Choose by priorities, not by a headline horsepower number

Pick the Fairlane when configuration choice is important

  • You want to choose among a six-cylinder and several V8-era specifications rather than accept one distinctive engine concept.
  • You prefer the full-size 1960–61 Fairlane identity and are prepared to verify the exact body and trim.
  • You enjoy researching factory-correct combinations, because the engine list changes between 1960 and 1961.

This is a preference for breadth, not a sourced promise of lower running cost or easier repairs. The available material does not rank the Fairlane above the Tempest for reliability, restoration expense or parts availability.

Pick the Tempest when engineering distinctiveness is the point

  • You specifically want a 1961 compact with the 195-cubic-inch Trophy 4 story.
  • You value an unusual powertrain arrangement and are willing to document which output configuration the car has.
  • You want a car whose appeal comes from Pontiac’s compact design and period originality rather than from a large V8 menu.

The Tempest’s novelty should be treated as a reason to investigate the car, not as proof that it is objectively better. A poorly documented or heavily modified Tempest may be less satisfying to an originality-focused buyer than a well-preserved Fairlane, regardless of the model’s historical interest.

Pick neither on paper if the actual example is wrong

Walk away from a car whose identity cannot be established, whose drivetrain is represented only by vague claims, or whose condition is hidden by fresh paint and missing records. A desirable model name cannot compensate for structural damage, undocumented modifications or an ownership history that cannot be reconstructed.

A practical inspection and documentation process

1. Establish the model year and generation

  1. Record the year from the title, identification plate and surviving factory paperwork.
  2. For a Fairlane, confirm whether it is a 1960–61 full-size car or a 1962-or-later intermediate.
  3. For a Tempest, confirm that the car is a 1961 model if you are comparing it with the early Trophy 4 specifications discussed here.
  4. Write the body style next to the year. Do not use a sedan wheelbase figure to describe a different Tempest body without verification.

2. Verify the engine and transmission

  1. Photograph engine identification marks and compare them with the seller’s description.
  2. On a 1960 Fairlane, check whether the car corresponds to the documented 223-six, 292-V8 or 352-V8 choices, and note the carburetion associated with a 352 rating.
  3. On a 1961 Fairlane, verify whether the car has the claimed 390 V8, a six-cylinder or another listed configuration.
  4. On a 1961 Tempest, identify the Trophy 4 configuration and record fuel, carburetion and transmission details because those affect the stated 110–155 hp ratings.
  5. Ask whether the engine and transmission are original, rebuilt, replaced or modified. Require invoices or photographs when the answer affects the car’s identity or value.

3. Inspect condition without assuming a model advantage

  • Check the body, floors, frame or structural areas, suspension mounting points and signs of previous collision repair.
  • Inspect the engine bay for incompatible parts, cut wiring, non-factory brackets and evidence that a replacement engine was installed.
  • Review the transmission, steering, brakes, cooling system and fuel system as components of the individual vehicle.
  • Look beneath cosmetic finishes. New paint can conceal repairs, while an older finish can make a structurally sound car look less attractive than it is.

These checks are general buying guidance. The period material does not provide a quantified condition scale or a reliability ranking for either model.

4. Reconstruct the ownership history

  1. Request titles, registration records, maintenance invoices and restoration photographs.
  2. Match the paperwork’s year, body and engine description with the car in front of you.
  3. Separate factory equipment from later additions, including carburetor changes, engine swaps, transmission swaps and suspension modifications.
  4. Ask for a written list of known defects rather than relying on statements such as “runs great.”

5. Use manuals carefully

An Auto History Preservation Society listing documents a 1961 Pontiac Service Manual covering Tempest chassis and body material. That establishes that model-specific service documentation exists. It does not establish current retail availability, completeness of a particular copy or compatibility with every Tempest year. Confirm the manual’s coverage before paying for it or using it to guide a repair.

Originality, modifications and how to describe the car accurately

Originality is not a single yes-or-no label. A Fairlane can retain its original body while carrying a replacement V8; a Tempest can preserve its Trophy 4 appearance while using non-original carburetion. Record what is known, what is believed and what has not been verified.

Use precise descriptions in advertisements and purchase agreements: model year, body style, engine displacement, transmission, known modifications and documentation supplied. “1961 Tempest” is a starting point. “1961 Tempest sedan with a documented 195-cubic-inch Trophy 4, stated 120-hp configuration and replacement transmission” is a materially more useful description if those facts are supported.

The same discipline prevents Fairlane confusion. State “1960 full-size Fairlane 500” or “1961 full-size Fairlane 500” when that is the car. If the car is a 1962-or-later intermediate Fairlane, say so plainly rather than allowing the unqualified Fairlane name to imply the earlier full-size model.

What the available evidence cannot answer

Period specifications explain identity and design, but they do not settle modern ownership questions. The cited sources do not provide a matched reliability study, current repair-cost survey, restoration-cost comparison, parts-sourcing ranking or present-day buyer-preference statistic.

They also do not provide a common road test for the Fairlane and Tempest. Horsepower numbers come from period manufacturer or reference specifications, with configuration qualifications, and should not be presented as equivalent laboratory measurements. A 1960 Fairlane’s 119-inch wheelbase and a 1961 Tempest sedan’s 112-inch wheelbase are useful reference points, not complete predictions of room or handling.

For that reason, a responsible buyer should spend more time verifying condition and records than searching for a universal winner. Two cars of the same model can differ more in structural integrity, originality and maintenance history than the model names suggest.

Decision matrix for a real purchase

Your priority More natural starting point Question to resolve before buying
Full-size 1960–61 Ford character 1960 or 1961 Fairlane 500 Is the car genuinely from the full-size generation, and which engine and body configuration does it have?
Several period engine choices Fairlane Does the advertised engine match the identification marks and documentation?
Compact dimensions and a distinctive four-cylinder story 1961 Tempest Which Trophy 4 output configuration, fuel system and transmission are present?
Factory-correct restoration Either model Can the seller document year-correct trim, drivetrain and major repairs?
Lowest projected ownership cost Not established by the cited evidence Obtain a condition-based inspection and local parts and labor information for the exact car.
Best modern reliability Not established by the cited evidence Judge the individual vehicle’s maintenance, workmanship and current mechanical condition.

Bottom line: which early-1960s classic is right for you?

Choose a 1960–61 Fairlane 500 if you want a full-size Ford and the ability to select among markedly different six-cylinder and V8 configurations. Make the year explicit, because the Fairlane name changes category in 1962, and verify the exact engine, carburetion, body and trim.

Choose a 1961 Tempest if the compact Pontiac’s engineering identity is the attraction. Its 195-cubic-inch Trophy 4, offered in 110- to 155-hp configurations depending on fuel, carburetion and transmission, gives the car a character unlike a conventional V8-focused comparison. Confirm the drivetrain and originality before treating any horsepower figure as applicable.

If your deciding factor is reliability, restoration cost or parts availability, the available period evidence cannot supply a defensible model-wide answer. Inspect the actual vehicle, review its records and buy the example whose identity and condition you can prove.
