Ford F-150 Raptor Generations Ranked by Reliability: A Used-Buyer’s Guide

The 2011–2014 6.2L Raptor is a simplicity-based pick, while 2017–2020 trucks merit cam-phaser scrutiny and newer models still need long-term evidence. Check campaign status and the individual truck’s history before buying.

Provisional ranking: 2011–2014 6.2L first-generation Raptors are the simplest age-based pick; 2021-and-newer trucks look promising but lack long-term evidence; and 2017–2020 second-generation trucks deserve the closest scrutiny for Ford-documented cam-phaser noise. This is an evidence-weighted buying guide, not a measured reliability league table: no comparable Raptor-specific dataset establishes failure rates across all three generations. A particular truck’s maintenance, mileage, modifications, off-road history, and condition can overturn the order.

How to read this reliability ranking

The generations span 2010–2014, 2017–2020, and 2021 onward, with a 2015–2016 gap. The ranking weighs configuration and age, documented service concerns, and how much durability evidence is available. It does not assign a statistical reliability score: the sources do not compare failure rates while controlling for mileage, maintenance, modifications, or off-road use.

That distinction matters especially when shopping for a used truck with more than 80,000 miles. A documented repair and careful use can make a specific second-generation Raptor a better prospect than a neglected truck from another generation. Treat the order as a starting point for inspection, not a substitute for one.

1. First generation (2010–2014): simplest pick, but condition rules

The first generation ranks first as a configuration-specific, age-based preference—not because a published study proves it has the lowest failure rate. The key distinction is under the hood: the model-history overview identifies a 5.4L V8 in 2010 and a 6.2L V8 in 2011–2014. Do not apply the 6.2L preference to every first-generation truck.

These are now the oldest Raptors in the comparison. Their present reliability depends heavily on mileage, maintenance, corrosion exposure, and how they were used. Check the underbody and suspension for damage or wear, and assess the drivetrain and cooling system alongside the service records. The available sources do not establish a defensible first-generation failure rate.

2. Third generation (2021 onward): promising, but long-term reliability is unproven

Third-generation trucks are too young to compare confidently on long-term durability with older Raptors. Several vehicle-specific campaigns are relevant, but none establishes that every truck of a given model year has the same issue.

2022 Raptors with 37-inch tires

Ford recalled certain 2022 Raptors equipped with 37-inch tires for low lug-nut torque. Confirm whether the specific VIN was affected and whether recall 22S59 was completed; check wheel and stud service records as well. Ford’s recall document describes the campaign.

2023 Raptor R

Ford’s Customer Satisfaction Program 23B20 covered a limited group of 2023 F-150 Raptor R trucks with a potentially loose or missing bellhousing bolt. Ford stated a U.S. affected population of 881 vehicles, and the program term ended September 30, 2024. These figures describe the campaign, not the reliability of all 2023 Raptor Rs. Ask whether the VIN was included and whether the repair was completed while the program was active. Ford’s program document has the details.

Certain 2026 3.5L Raptors

Ford’s 2026 emissions recall 26E03 concerns incorrect PCM software installed at manufacture in certain 3.5L Raptors. Ford stated that 2,074 U.S. vehicles were affected and called for a software update. Check completion by VIN; the campaign population is not an overall failure estimate. Ford’s bulletin identifies the affected population and remedy.

3. Second generation (2017–2020): scrutinize cam-phaser history

This generation ranks third in this provisional comparison because Ford documented cam-phaser noise in certain 3.5L GTDI F-150s and explicitly included Raptor and Limited variants in its 2021 service programs. Ford described a possible rattle at startup after an extended shutdown or a knock at warm idle. The service actions are an important inspection lead, not proof that every truck is affected.

What Ford’s programs covered

Program 21B10 described a PCM reflash. The companion 21N03 document said that, for eligible vehicles still making noise after the update, dealers were to replace all four cam phasers under its stated terms. Those programs had time-limited terms that have expired; do not assume they will pay for a repair now. Ask for the service invoices and have a qualified technician listen to a true cold start and assess any unexplained startup rattle or warm-idle knock. Ford’s 21B10 document and 21N03 document provide the program details.

Ford’s stated assessment was: “A cam phaser that has developed an undesirable noise does not affect the vehicle safety, performance, or emissions.” That statement addresses the specified noise condition; it is not a blanket assurance that an affected vehicle has no reliability risk. Ford’s service-program document contains the statement.

How to check a specific Raptor before buying

  1. Get the VIN and check campaign status. Use NHTSA’s recall lookup, and ask a Ford dealer to confirm Ford campaign status and completion. NHTSA notes that its lookup may not yet reflect every manufacturer-provided update, so check both channels.
  2. Match the truck to its generation-specific checks. For a 2017–2020 Raptor, request cam-phaser program and repair invoices. For a 2022 truck with 37-inch tires, confirm 22S59 completion. For a 2023 Raptor R, ask whether it was in 23B20’s affected VIN population and whether the repair was completed. For a certain 2026 3.5L Raptor, verify 26E03 completion.
  3. Review the truck’s history and condition. Compare maintenance documentation, mileage and use, stock versus modified condition, cold-start behavior, and underbody and suspension condition. Consider whether off-road use is reflected in wear or damage.
  4. Arrange a qualified inspection. Ask a technician to assess concerns found in the records or during a cold start. A basic OBD-II reader can screen for some stored engine and emissions codes, but it cannot establish overall reliability or replace an inspection. Ford’s 2013 F-150 owner guide describes OBD-II’s emissions-monitoring role; it does not establish that every scanner can access every Raptor module.

What recalls and complaint counts can—and cannot—tell you

A recall or customer-satisfaction program is a reason to check a vehicle’s VIN and repair history, not a reliability score for its generation. NHTSA explains that it reviews complaints when deciding whether to investigate, while recalls address safety risks or noncompliance with standards. Neither a complaint count nor the number of vehicles in a campaign supplies a controlled comparison of Raptor failure rates. For a purchase decision, combine VIN-specific campaign checks with service records, condition, and an inspection.
