Ford says the next-generation F-150 Lightning will use an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) setup: electric motors propel the pickup, while a high-power generator supports a Ford-estimated total range of more than 700 miles. That is a company estimate, not a published EPA rating or independent test result. Ford has not yet announced a launch date or full production specifications.
What Ford has announced about the next Lightning
In an announcement dated December 15, 2025, Ford said the next-generation F-150 Lightning will be an EREV rather than a battery-electric truck like the current model. Ford says electric motors will drive the wheels and a high-power generator will back the truck’s estimated total range of more than 700 miles. Ford’s announcement does not identify that estimate as an EPA-certified figure or report a test result.
Ford chief EV, digital and design officer Doug Field described the truck as retaining “near instantaneous torque and pure electric driving,” and said the generator would help it “tow like a locomotive.” Those are Ford’s promotional descriptions; the company has not published a final towing rating or independent performance measurements for the future model.
Ford says the truck will retain exportable electricity for work sites, campsites and home backup during an outage. The company plans to assemble it at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn, Michigan. It has said more vehicle details and timing will come later.

How can an electric pickup have more than 700 miles of range?
In an EREV, electric motors provide propulsion, while an onboard generator supplies electricity to support driving beyond what the battery alone can provide. Ford has not yet published the next Lightning’s battery capacity, electric-only range, generator make or output, or fuel capacity. The more-than-700-mile figure therefore describes Ford’s estimated total range, not how far the truck can travel on battery power alone.
Ford’s current consumer FAQ says it is not yet prepared to announce specific availability dates. It also confirms that the next generation will use EREV technology rather than be replaced by a new all-electric truck. Check Ford’s F-150 Lightning page for its current FAQ and updates.

What changes for current F-150 Lightning owners?
Ford says production of the current battery-electric F-150 Lightning ends in 2025, and that version will no longer be available to order. Ford says support for existing owners will continue and replacement parts will remain available. The EREV is a different powertrain, so current-model specifications should not be treated as specifications for the next truck.
For context, Ford’s 2025 specification sheet lists the current BEV with a 98-kWh standard-range battery and 123-kWh or 131-kWh extended-range batteries. Its EPA-estimated range is 240 miles for standard-range versions and 300–320 miles for extended-range configurations, depending on configuration. Ford says actual range varies with conditions, use, maintenance and battery age or health. These figures do not establish the EREV’s battery size, electric-only range or total range. Ford’s 2025 specifications also list maximum towing of up to 10,000 pounds for some properly equipped current-model configurations; that rating is not a rating for the future EREV.

What Ford has not announced yet
Ford has not published a complete production specification sheet for the next-generation truck. In the official material available, the following details remain unannounced:
- Price, trims and order date
- Launch or availability date
- Battery capacity and electric-only range
- Generator make, output and fuel capacity
- EPA rating
- Final towing and payload ratings
- Charging specifications
That leaves key ownership comparisons unanswered: how much range it will retain while towing, what charging and refueling it will require, how much exportable power it will provide, and how its price and operating costs will compare with battery-electric and gas or hybrid pickups. Ford has said it will provide more details later, but has not yet supplied enough information to resolve those questions.

How the EREV fits Ford’s broader strategy
Ford’s 2025 SEC-filed release said the company expects approximately 50% of its global vehicle volume by 2030 to be hybrids, extended-range EVs and fully electric vehicles, up from 17% in 2025. That is Ford’s projection, not an independently verified market statistic. The F-150 Lightning EREV announcement sits within that broader strategic shift; it does not establish the future truck’s price, efficiency or sales performance. Ford’s SEC-filed release provides the company’s stated projection.
The broader corporate announcement also included financial context: the Associated Press reported that Ford expected $19.5 billion in special items associated with its changes. That figure concerns Ford’s corporate strategy, not the truck’s technical specifications. The Associated Press report covers that context.
