You can change an F-150’s oil yourself, but there is no single “F-150 oil change” specification. The correct oil quantity, viscosity, Ford specification, filter part number, drain-plug tool and oil-life-monitor procedure depend on the truck’s model year, engine and sometimes market. Identify those details first, then use the owner’s manual supplied with the truck as your controlling reference.
The job consists of draining the old oil, replacing the filter, reinstalling the drain plug without overtightening, adding the specified amount of qualifying oil, checking the level and resetting the monitor when equipped. The sections below give a safe decision process and a Ford-supported sequence without pretending that one year’s numbers fit every F-150.

Start with the exact F-150 configuration
“F-150” covers multiple generations, gasoline engines, diesel applications and trim levels. A 2020 F-150 XLT with a 2.7-liter engine and a 2020 XLT with a 3.5-liter EcoBoost are different service references even though both are F-150s. Before buying anything, record the model year, engine displacement and fuel type. If the truck was sold outside the United States or has an engine swap, record that as well.

Choose oil by specification, then viscosity
Ford’s 2022 owner’s manual states: “Use oil that meets the defined specification and viscosity grade.” That order matters. An oil can display the correct SAE viscosity and still fail to meet the Ford specification required by the engine.
The 2022 F-150 example
In the cited 2022 F-150 manual, the listed example is SAE 5W-30 meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C961-A1, with a capacity of 6.0 U.S. quarts (5.7 liters), including the oil filter. Those figures apply only to the engine and configuration covered by that 2022 manual; they are not an all-years F-150 rule.
That manual recommends Motorcraft oil. If it is unavailable, the same manual permits oil of the recommended viscosity grade that displays the API Certification Mark for gasoline engines. Read the container for both the required Ford specification and viscosity rather than choosing by brand name or viscosity alone.

Do not add supplemental oil additives
Ford’s cited 2022 guidance says supplemental engine-oil additives are unnecessary and could lead to engine damage that the vehicle warranty does not cover. Use a qualifying oil at the specified level instead of trying to alter its properties with an aftermarket additive.
Match the replacement filter to the engine
Replace the oil filter at the same service. Ford’s 2013 F-150 diesel supplement directs owners to use the filter part number listed in that manual’s Capacities and Specifications chapter. Treat that as the method for every F-150: look up the exact part number for your year and engine, then confirm the package or catalog listing identifies the same application.
Do not select a filter solely because it fits the thread, resembles the old filter or is advertised for “F-150” without an engine and year match. Keep the new filter, the oil and the manual together before starting so the truck is not left drained while you search for a substitute.

Tools and supplies checklist
- Engine oil that meets the exact Ford specification and SAE viscosity for your truck.
- A replacement oil filter with the correct year-and-engine part number.
- An oil-drain pan large enough for the full capacity listed in your manual.
- Hand tools that match your truck’s drain plug and filter arrangement.
- Clean measuring containers or a way to add oil in controlled increments.
- Shop towels and suitable hand protection for used oil and a hot filter.
- The owner’s manual supplied with the truck, opened to the oil-change, capacities and monitor sections.
Ford’s 2013 diesel supplement specifically says a 3/8-inch socket drive may assist with removing and installing that manual’s drain plug. It is not a universal F-150 drain-plug size; confirm the tool detail for your truck before applying force.

Safety points Ford specifically calls out
- Do not remove the oil-filler cap while the engine is running.
- Do not add oil when the engine is hot. Follow the temperature and service precautions in the exact manual.
- Never fill above the dipstick’s maximum mark. Ford warns that an overfull oil level may cause engine damage.
- Do not handle a hot oil filter with bare hands. Used oil can irritate skin; wash with soap and water after contact.
- Use the vehicle-specific instructions for access and support. The cited material does not establish one universal lifting or underbody procedure for every F-150, so do not substitute a method from another model.
Ford-based DIY oil-change sequence
The order below follows the sequence in Ford’s 2013 F-150 diesel supplement. The drain-plug design, access points, tightening specification and refill quantity still belong to your own manual.
- Confirm the specification and capacity. Recheck the year, engine, oil specification, viscosity, filter part number and the quantity stated for an oil change with the filter. Set out the correct supplies before opening the drain.
- Make the truck safe for service. Turn the engine off, keep the filler cap installed until service requires its removal, and follow the manual’s precautions concerning temperature and access. Never work from an assumed tool size or procedure copied from another F-150.
- Position the drain pan. Place it where it will catch oil from the oil-pan drain opening and the filter. Account for the full capacity listed in your manual so the pan does not overflow.
- Remove the oil filter and drain plug as directed. The 2013 diesel supplement lists removing the filter and oil-pan drain plug, then waiting for the oil to drain. Your truck may require a different access sequence; use its instructions if they differ.
- Allow the old oil to drain. Wait until the flow has reduced as described by your manual. Keep skin away from hot oil and do not handle a hot filter bare-handed.
- Install the new filter. Use the exact part number for the engine. Follow the manual’s installation instructions and do not improvise a different filter because it appears interchangeable.
- Reinstall the drain plug. Start it with the correct method for your truck and tighten it only to the vehicle-specific instruction. Ford’s supplement expressly warns not to overtighten the plug; excessive force can damage the plug or the oil-pan threads.
- Add new oil in measured increments. Use the specified viscosity and Ford specification. Add the manual’s stated refill quantity, remembering whether that figure includes the filter. The 2022 example is 6.0 quarts (5.7 liters) including the filter, but that number must not be transferred to another year or engine.
- Check the level without exceeding the maximum mark. Follow the dipstick or electronic-level-check procedure in your manual. If the level is at the maximum mark, stop; Ford warns against overfilling. Correct an overfill according to the vehicle’s service instructions rather than driving with the excess.
- Reset the oil-life monitor if fitted. The 2013 diesel supplement places the Intelligent Oil Life Monitor reset after the refill. Menu names and button sequences are vehicle-specific, so use the exact manual rather than a generic F-150 button sequence.
When the oil-life monitor says service is due
Ford’s 2013 diesel supplement instructs owners to change the oil and filter when the display indicates “OIL CHANGE REQUIRED.” That message is a service reminder, not permission to ignore the oil specification or filter fitment. The interval and the reset menu can vary by vehicle, so record the message and consult the manual for the truck’s procedure.

If you changed the oil but the reminder remains, the service itself may be complete while the reset was not. Find the oil-life section for your exact instrument cluster and repeat only that documented reset procedure. Do not assume that a reset confirms the correct oil level or proves that the right filter was installed.

This framework is more reliable than choosing an oil because it is marketed for trucks or because another F-150 owner used it. Requirements can change between engines and model years.

A practical pre-start decision checklist
Do not open the drain until every answer below is documented:
- What is the truck’s model year?
- Which engine and fuel type does it have?
- What Ford oil specification and SAE viscosity does that manual require?
- What capacity does the manual give with a new filter?
- Which filter part number is listed for that engine?
- What tool and tightening instruction apply to the drain plug?
- Does the truck use an Intelligent Oil Life Monitor, and where is its reset procedure?
- Where will the used oil and filter be handled after removal under local requirements?
If any answer is unknown, pause the job and identify the configuration first. That short delay is safer than guessing at a capacity, specification, filter or reset sequence.
What the documented examples do—and do not—prove
The 2022 manual example establishes one configuration’s 5W-30, WSS-M2C961-A1 oil and 6.0-quart (5.7-liter) capacity including the filter. The 2013 diesel supplement establishes a Ford-described drain, filter-replacement, refill and monitor-reset sequence for that supplement, plus its reference to a 3/8-inch socket drive and its warning against overtightening. The 2025 manual establishes the cited hot-engine, filler-cap and maximum-level precautions. None of those examples supplies a universal specification for every F-150.
