The Lightning is the better fit when you want a familiar full-size F-150 layout, Ford’s documented Pro Power Onboard system, and the option to supply a properly equipped home during an outage. The R1T makes more sense when its gear tunnel, front trunk, bed, and adventure-focused accessories solve your particular cargo problem.
Range, towing and charging are configuration-specific on both trucks. Ford’s published figures apply to model year 2025; Rivian’s online configurator changes with battery, drivetrain and wheel choices and labels some range estimates as preliminary. Use the exact vehicle’s window sticker, door-jamb label and owner documentation before comparing a deal or planning a trip.

At a glance: which truck fits which buyer?
| What matters most | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Familiar full-size pickup format | 2025 Ford F-150 Lightning | It uses the F-150 nameplate and layout, with a large front trunk and available Pro Power Onboard. |
| Distinctive storage for outdoor gear | Rivian R1T | The front trunk, gear tunnel, bed and available crossbars create several separate cargo zones. |
| Highest published towing ceiling | Specified Gen 2 Rivian R1T configurations | Rivian lists up to 11,000 pounds for certain configurations, but a weight-distributing hitch is required for maximum R1 towing capacity. |
| Documented truck-based export power | 2025 Ford F-150 Lightning | Pro Power Onboard is rated up to 9.6 kW on available equipment, and Ford offers a home-backup system when the home is correctly equipped. |
| Simple daily charging decision | Neither by default | Both require you to verify the connector, cable or adapter, electrical capacity and installation for the exact truck and home. |
Those are use-case conclusions from the manufacturers’ specifications and feature descriptions, not results from a comparative road test. No independent range, towing or ownership test established a winner.
Body, seating and storage: two very different interpretations of a pickup
Ford keeps the conventional F-150 formula
The Lightning is an electric version of Ford’s F-150 concept: a full-size pickup with a separate bed and a large front trunk where an engine would normally sit. That makes it intuitive for drivers already accustomed to an F-150’s proportions, loading height and crew-cab passenger space. Ford’s specifications page describes the truck’s available front-trunk capacity and the Pro Power Onboard outlets together, so the frunk can serve as weather-protected cargo space while the bed handles bulky or dirty loads. See Ford’s current specifications at Ford’s F-150 Lightning specifications.

Rivian adds a full-width gear tunnel
Rivian describes the R1T as an all-electric truck with two rows and seating for five passengers. Its storage design includes a front trunk, the pickup bed, a pass-through gear tunnel behind the cab and available accessory crossbars. The tunnel is useful for long, wet or valuable items that you do not want exposed in the bed. Rivian’s storage article also discusses bed outlets and the way the separate compartments are intended to support recreation and equipment transport: Everything in its Place.
In practical terms, choose the Lightning when a conventional full-size truck bed and familiar F-150 package are the priority. Choose the R1T when dividing cargo among several enclosed and open compartments is more valuable than matching a traditional pickup layout. Neither storage system eliminates the need to measure your own equipment: check the dimensions of coolers, tool cases, bikes, boards and child gear against the actual truck.
Range: compare the exact battery, drivetrain and wheels
Electric-truck range is not one number per nameplate. Battery size, motor configuration, wheel-and-tire package, payload, temperature, speed and towing all affect the estimate. Ford’s 2025 information says select Lightning models reach an EPA-estimated 320 miles. Other 2025 configurations have lower published estimates. Rivian’s current R1T configuration flow displays different estimates as you select powertrain and options and warns that some figures are preliminary rather than official EPA values. Ford’s figures are at Ford’s specifications page; Rivian’s live estimates are at Rivian’s R1T configuration builder.

- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
| Truck and evidence | Published range information | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 Ford F-150 Lightning | Up to 320 miles EPA-estimated on select models; the page also lists lower estimates for other configurations. | Match the number to the specific 2025 trim and wheel package on the build sheet. |
| Current Rivian R1T | The configurator shows an estimate that changes with battery, drivetrain and options; some estimates are identified as preliminary, not official EPA values. | Record the selected configuration and whether the displayed figure is official or preliminary before comparing it with Ford. |
Do not turn the maximum advertised figure into a promise for every truck. A towing route, a cold-weather trip or sustained highway speed can reduce the distance available between charges. The manufacturer estimates are useful for comparing configurations, but they are not an independent real-world test.
How to make a fair range comparison
- Write down the model year for both vehicles. The Ford data here is specifically model year 2025; Rivian’s configurator is current and can change.
- Record battery, motor or drivetrain selection and wheel size for each truck.
- Confirm whether the Rivian number is an official EPA estimate or a preliminary estimate.
- Use the loaded vehicle and trailer weight, expected temperature and route elevation when planning a trip.
- Leave a charging reserve rather than planning to arrive at zero percent.
Towing: capacity is a rating, not a range guarantee
Ford F-150 Lightning towing
Ford lists maximum towing of up to 10,000 pounds for select 2025 Lightning configurations equipped with the available Max Trailer Tow Package. Its technical specifications also state that the rating varies with cargo, configuration, accessories and passengers. The package and rating details are in Ford’s 2025 F-150 Lightning Technical Specifications and the main Lightning specifications page.
Rivian R1T towing
Rivian’s product information lists up to 11,000 pounds for specified Gen 2 R1T battery and drivetrain configurations. Rivian says a weight-distributing hitch is required to achieve the maximum R1 towing capacity. The product information is available at Rivian’s R1 vehicle information. Because the published R1T information spans newer configurations and model years, do not compare its 11,000-pound figure with every R1T or assume it applies to the vehicle you are considering.

| Question | 2025 F-150 Lightning | Rivian R1T |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum published towing | Up to 10,000 lb on select configurations with available Max Trailer Tow Package. | Up to 11,000 lb on specified Gen 2 configurations. |
| Special equipment called out by manufacturer | Max Trailer Tow Package for the applicable rating. | Weight-distributing hitch required for maximum R1 towing capacity. |
| What can reduce the rating | Cargo, passengers, accessories and configuration. | Battery, drivetrain, configuration and the exact vehicle’s ratings. |
| Does the rating predict driving range while towing? | No; Ford’s rating is a structural/towing limit, not a range guarantee. | No; towing can materially change energy consumption and charging stops. |
What frequent towers should verify
- Loaded trailer weight, tongue weight and the truck’s payload limit.
- Door-jamb ratings, axle limits, hitch rating and the owner’s manual for the exact vehicle.
- Whether the required hitch or towing package is installed, not merely advertised as available.
- Charging locations that can accommodate the truck and trailer without unhitching.
- A route plan that allows for reduced range in wind, hills, cold weather and sustained speed.
If you tow occasionally, the maximum rating may be sufficient but charging planning remains important. If you tow every week, payload, route charging and the exact loaded combination matter more than the highest headline number.
Onboard power and outage backup
Lightning: up to 9.6 kW and optional home backup
Ford says Pro Power Onboard can provide up to 9.6 kW through available outlets. Ford also describes Home Backup Power, which can supply a properly equipped home during an outage when the truck is paired with the required charging and home-integration equipment. The truck alone is not a complete whole-home backup installation; the home hardware, wiring and installation must be designed and commissioned correctly. Ford’s specifications and system description are at Ford’s F-150 Lightning specifications.
R1T: useful outlets, different claim
Rivian’s 2025 owner guide documents vehicle power outlets, including 120-volt outlets, while warning that not every vehicle has every outlet. The guide does not establish a whole-home backup system equivalent to Ford’s described Home Backup Power. Use those outlets for compatible tools, appliances or campsite equipment only within the truck’s stated limits. Confirm the outlet equipment on the exact R1T and read the owner documentation at Rivian’s 2025 R1T Owner’s Guide.

Charging at home and on the road
Both trucks can be charged through manufacturer-supported hardware, but the existence of an accessory does not mean it is included with every vehicle. Ford lists the Charge Station Pro and Mobile Power Cord for the 2025 Lightning. The Charge Station Pro is the hardware associated with Ford’s home-backup feature when the home is correctly equipped. Rivian’s configurator lists a Rivian Wall Charger and adapters. See Ford’s charging information, the Ford technical specifications and Rivian’s R1T configuration builder.
Before buying either truck
- Ask the dealer or manufacturer which connector the exact truck uses and what charging cable or adapter is included.
- Have an electrician check the service panel, circuit capacity, grounding and cable route before you order a wall unit.
- Get a written installation quote; distance from the panel, trenching and panel upgrades can change the total cost.
- Confirm whether your parking space has reliable cellular or Wi-Fi coverage if the charger requires connectivity.
- For apartment or curbside parking, verify that you have a dependable public or workplace charging option.
- For towing trips, check charger access, stall layout and whether a trailer must be disconnected.
A home charger can make either truck convenient for routine driving, but neither manufacturer’s accessory listing establishes your local installation cost or a universal charging time. Electricity rates, demand charges and public-network pricing vary by location and date, so calculate those from your utility and the charging providers you actually use.

Daily practicality: match the truck to your cargo and routine
Choose the Lightning for conventional truck work
- You already use or understand the F-150 format and want familiar bed-based loading.
- You need substantial export power for tools, events or emergency loads.
- Home outage capability is a major reason to choose an electric pickup and you are willing to install the required home equipment.
- Your local Ford service and parts network is more convenient than the alternatives.
Choose the R1T for compartmentalized adventure cargo
- You regularly carry wet, dirty or valuable items that benefit from the enclosed gear tunnel or front trunk.
- Accessory crossbars and multiple storage zones fit bikes, boards, camping equipment or camera gear.
- You prefer a five-seat, two-row truck with an adventure-oriented storage design.
- The exact R1T configuration’s towing and range estimates meet your needs after checking the model year and equipment.
When neither is automatically the right answer
If you have no dependable place to charge overnight, solve that constraint before choosing between the trucks. If you tow a heavy trailer long distances every week, map the route and charging stops with the loaded trailer rather than relying on an unladen range estimate. If your primary need is whole-home backup, price the complete electrical installation—not just the vehicle—and confirm what loads the system is designed to support.

Ownership cost: what you can and cannot conclude from these specifications
Current transaction prices, incentives, local inventory, insurance premiums, electricity rates and charger-installation costs were not established in the manufacturer material cited here. They can vary by state, tax status, utility territory, dealer, financing date and vehicle configuration. Do not treat a national advertised price or a temporary incentive as your ownership cost.
Build a local cost worksheet
| Cost item | What to obtain |
|---|---|
| Vehicle | A written quote for the exact trim, battery, drivetrain, wheels, towing package and accessories. |
| Charging equipment | Price and availability for the applicable Ford or Rivian charger, cable and adapter. |
| Installation | An electrician’s quote covering permits, panel work, trenching and inspection. |
| Energy | Your utility’s residential rate, time-of-use schedule and any demand or connection fees. |
| Public charging | Rates and access rules on the routes you actually drive, including trailer-friendly locations. |
| Insurance and registration | A local quote using the exact vehicle identification and coverage limits. |
This worksheet often changes the practical winner. A truck with slightly better advertised range may be less convenient if installing its charger requires a costly service upgrade, while a truck with a lower estimate may work well when you can charge every night at home.
A decision process that avoids the common mistakes
- Define the job. List passenger count, bed cargo, enclosed gear, trailer weight, annual towing frequency and outage-power needs.
- Select a configuration first. Do not compare a maximum-range Rivian estimate with an unspecified Lightning or mix a 2025 Ford figure with an unqualified Rivian model year.
- Check ratings on the actual vehicle. Use the door-jamb label, window sticker, hitch label and owner’s manual for payload, axle, tongue and trailer limits.
- Plan charging where you live. Confirm parking, electrical capacity, connector, included equipment and installation cost.
- Plan a representative trip. Include weather, highway speed, hills, cargo and any trailer; identify backup chargers.
- Price the complete purchase. Add charger installation, insurance, registration, energy and any required towing or home-backup equipment.
- Test the storage solution. Bring the items you actually carry and verify bed, frunk, gear-tunnel and crossbar compatibility.
Which electric truck is right for you?
Buy the 2025 Ford F-150 Lightning when the F-150 format, documented up-to-9.6-kW Pro Power Onboard output or properly equipped home-backup capability is central to your decision. Confirm the 320-mile EPA-estimated figure applies to the exact trim and wheels you are buying, and remember that the up-to-10,000-pound towing rating is limited to select configurations with the required package.
Buy the Rivian R1T when the gear tunnel, front trunk, bed and accessory system are more useful than a conventional pickup layout. Verify the current configuration’s range label, because some Rivian estimates are preliminary, and confirm whether your selected Gen 2 truck is one of the configurations rated up to 11,000 pounds. Maximum R1 towing requires a weight-distributing hitch.
For either truck, home charging and the exact loaded use case decide more than the badge. Compare the vehicle you can actually order, the equipment you can install and the route you can charge—not the best number appearing on a general model page.
