On an F-150 equipped with a selectable four-wheel-drive transfer case, 2H means two-wheel drive high range and normally sends power to the rear wheels. 4H means four-wheel drive high range and is for conditions where extra traction is needed. The available settings and their correct use depend on the truck’s model year, market, trim, and equipment, so check its owner’s manual before changing modes.
What 2H and 4H mean on a Ford F-150
The letters and numbers identify transfer-case settings. “H” means high range; “2” and “4” indicate two-wheel or four-wheel drive. Ford Argentina’s regional F-150 description labels 2H as “4×2 (2H)” and describes it for ordinary street and highway use. It labels 4H as “4×4 alta (4H)” and gives deep snow, sand, and mud as examples of low-traction conditions for that setting. These examples are specific to Ford’s Argentina offering, not universal instructions for every F-150. Ford Argentina’s F-150 description

| Setting | What it means | How Ford describes it |
|---|---|---|
| 2H | Two-wheel drive, high range; Ford Argentina describes rear-wheel drive. | Ordinary street and highway use in Ford Argentina’s regional description. |
| 4H | Four-wheel drive, high range. | Added traction on low-traction surfaces; Ford Argentina gives deep snow, sand, and mud as examples. |
| 4A | Automatic four-wheel drive, where equipped. | Ford Argentina says the system electronically controls power to the front and rear axles as needed. |
| 4L | Four-wheel drive, low range, where equipped. | Low-range gearing provides greater torque multiplication for demanding, low-speed or high-load conditions such as deep sand, steep slopes, or pulling heavy objects, according to Ford Argentina. |
How 4A and 4L differ from 4H
4A: automatic distribution
4A is not the same as 4H: it automatically varies power between the front and rear axles as needed, according to Ford Argentina’s description. It is available only on configurations equipped with it.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems4L: low-range gearing
4L is a low-range transfer-case setting, not simply another high-traction mode. Ford Argentina describes its gearing as multiplying torque for demanding low-speed or high-load situations. Follow the exact vehicle’s manual for operating instructions and limits.

Transfer-case settings are not selectable drive modes
Labels such as 2H, 4H, 4A, and 4L refer to the transfer case. The dashboard’s selectable drive modes are a separate system. Ford U.S. model pages list examples including Normal, ECO, Sport, Tow/Haul, Slippery, Deep Snow/Sand, and Mud/Rut; Rock Crawl appears on some off-road versions. Which modes are offered depends on series, drivetrain, and equipment. Ford U.S. F-150 models Ford U.S. F-150
Ford Brazil explains that selectable driving modes in its regional offering can adjust accelerator response, gear shifts, steering feel, traction, rear differential lock, and stability control. That describes broader vehicle behavior, rather than defining the transfer-case labels. Ford Brazil on driving modes

Which settings your F-150 has—and where to confirm their use
Not every F-150 has a 2H/4H selector, and 4A or 4L is not present on every truck. Current U.S. model information shows both 4×2 and 4×4 configurations, while drive-mode choices vary by trim and equipment. Regional Ford descriptions also reflect different market offerings. - Consult the owner’s manual for that exact vehicle for shifting instructions and surface limitations; do not assume a speed threshold or operating rule applies across model years.
