No: the insolvency headlines did not mean that every business using the RECARO or BBS name was closing. RECARO Automotive GmbH filed for insolvency in Germany in 2024, then Proma Group announced an agreement to take over the German automotive business. BBS Autotechnik GmbH was in insolvency proceedings when KW automotive said it had acquired relevant plant assets and would restart wheel production. Those announcements describe different transactions—and do not establish the current legal or financial status of every company or product line.
What happened to RECARO Automotive?
July 2024: a German company filed for insolvency
On July 30, 2024, RECARO Automotive GmbH announced that it had filed for insolvency with the Local Court of Esslingen. The company cited steep price increases, adverse market conditions and the loss of a major contract. It said preliminary self-administration had been approved the previous day. October 2024: RECARO clarified which businesses were affected
RECARO Automotive said the proceedings applied exclusively to RECARO Automotive GmbH in Germany, not its other named automotive units or RECARO Group businesses in aircraft seating, gaming and rail. It said RECARO Group had no ownership stake in RECARO Automotive and described the connection as a licensing relationship. An insolvency filing by one operating company therefore was not evidence that every RECARO-branded business was insolvent. RECARO Automotive’s October 9, 2024 clarification.

On December 4, 2024, Proma Group announced it had signed an investment agreement with RECARO Automotive GmbH in Germany to take over the business. Proma said operations would continue and relaunch across Europe in January 2025, with aftermarket seats planned to be available that month. Those details were Proma’s announced plans; the announcement alone does not confirm every later legal step, product line or supply arrangement. What happened to BBS?
March 2025: KW automotive reported an asset acquisition
BBS Autotechnik GmbH was in insolvency proceedings when KW automotive announced on March 27, 2025, that it had acquired relevant assets of the Schiltach and Herbolzheim plants from those proceedings. KW said it owned the BBS brand and aftermarket business, and that the acquired equipment and resources would enable a restart of BBS wheel production. This was an asset transaction and a production-restart announcement; it should not be read as proof that the original insolvent company continued unchanged or that every BBS product remained available. What do the announcements establish—and what remains unknown?
The available company announcements show that particular German legal entities faced insolvency proceedings and that subsequent business or asset transactions were announced. RECARO Automotive’s press page lists a collaboration announcement dated April 8, 2026, as well as other 2025 activity, indicating later company activity. What should buyers check before ordering?
Neither company announcement confirms a particular retailer’s inventory or whether a product suits a specific vehicle. For BBS alloy wheels, verify the exact wheel’s diameter, width, bolt pattern and offset against your vehicle’s requirements, and confirm stock and delivery with the seller. For a RECARO aftermarket seat, verify the exact model, seller, availability and vehicle compatibility. The brand-level announcements are not a substitute for fitment or order confirmation.
