For the comparable 2023–24 configurations with detailed Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) headlight tests, the Ford Expedition has the better result. Its tested headlights earned a Marginal rating, while the Chevrolet Tahoe’s earned Poor. The Expedition still had inadequate illumination on both right-hand curves and some low-beam glare; the Tahoe had inadequate illumination on more approaches and excessive low-beam glare.
That is a comparison of the specific 2023–24 lighting configurations IIHS tested, not a guarantee for every trim or a direct 2026 comparison. Before buying, verify the model year, trim and headlamp equipment on the exact Expedition or Tahoe you are considering.

The short answer: Expedition wins the tested comparison
When night visibility is the deciding factor, the Ford Expedition is the stronger choice of these two full-size SUVs based on the available detailed IIHS results. The Expedition’s headlight system was rated Marginal; the Chevrolet Tahoe’s was rated Poor. Both vehicles used LED reflector headlights, high-beam assist and no curve-adaptive headlamps in the tested setups.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe grades do not mean that the Expedition provides consistently strong nighttime lighting or that the Tahoe is unusable. They summarize measured seeing distance on a straight road and four curves, together with the amount of low-beam glare directed toward an oncoming driver. On those measures, the Expedition had fewer serious deficiencies and less glare than the Tahoe.

The evidence applies to the 2023–24 configurations represented by the detailed IIHS vehicle pages. A current-year listing or a different trim can use different headlamp hardware. Treat the result as a model-year-and-equipment comparison, not as a blanket rating for every Expedition and Tahoe sold.
What the IIHS grades actually measure
IIHS evaluates headlights on five approaches: a straightaway, a gradual left curve, a gradual right curve, a sharp left curve and a sharp right curve. It measures the distance at which the lamps provide at least 5 lux of illumination, a threshold used to represent useful visibility. It also measures low-beam glare experienced by an oncoming driver.
The vehicles are tested as delivered by a dealer. IIHS does not adjust the headlamp aim before testing. That matters because the result reflects the lighting a buyer receives in the vehicle rather than an idealized setup after an expert alignment.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The method is therefore more informative than a feature label such as “LED.” An LED lamp can still illuminate too little distance, illuminate unevenly around a bend or create excessive glare. IIHS combines those factors into the complete rating.
High-beam assist is accounted for in the IIHS procedure. A vehicle equipped with the feature can receive a reduction in low-beam demerits because the system may provide additional high-beam use when conditions allow. That adjustment does not turn a weak low-beam pattern into a strong one; it simply recognizes the potential benefit of automated high-beam operation.
Ford Expedition and Chevrolet Tahoe: side-by-side results
| Test question | Ford Expedition (2023–24 tested setup) | Chevrolet Tahoe (2023–24 tested setup) |
|---|---|---|
| Overall IIHS headlight grade | Marginal | Poor |
| Headlight type | LED reflector | LED reflector |
| Curve-adaptive headlights | No | No |
| High-beam assist | Yes | Yes |
| Low beams on a straight road | Good visibility on both sides | Good visibility on the left; inadequate visibility on the right |
| Low beams on curves | Inadequate on both right curves; fair on both left curves | Fair on the sharp left curve and both right curves; inadequate on the gradual left curve |
| Low-beam glare | Some glare | Excessive glare |
The table shows why the Expedition leads without being a clear-cut “good” headlight system. Its straight-road coverage was good on both sides, but both right-hand curves were inadequate. The Tahoe had a right-side deficiency even on the straightaway and another on the gradual left curve. Its excessive glare is an additional disadvantage for drivers approaching the SUV.

How the Expedition performed in the test
Straight-road visibility
IIHS described the Expedition’s low-beam visibility as good on both sides of the straightaway. That is the cleanest part of the Expedition result: on an uncurved road, the tested lamps reached the needed illumination distance to the left and right without an inadequate designation.
Curves
The Expedition’s performance became uneven when the road bent. Both right-hand curves were rated inadequate, while the gradual and sharp left curves were rated fair. Because the lamps were not curve-adaptive, they did not swivel into the bend. The driver therefore depends on the fixed beam pattern and steering direction to reveal the road ahead.
“Inadequate” in an IIHS approach means the measured light did not reach far enough at the 5-lux threshold for that test geometry. It is not a prediction that a driver will always fail to see a particular obstacle. It does identify the situations in which the tested beam provided less measured margin.
Glare
The Expedition produced some low-beam glare. That is less severe than the Tahoe’s excessive-glare result, but it is still a demerit because glare can reduce comfort and visibility for drivers coming toward the SUV. Correctly aimed lamps and a clean windshield remain important even when a system earns a better overall grade.
How the Tahoe performed in the test
Straight-road visibility
The Tahoe’s low beams provided good visibility on the left side of the straightaway but inadequate visibility on the right. That asymmetry means the tested system did not provide the same measured reach across the full forward field on a straight road.
Curves
On the curves, IIHS rated the Tahoe fair on the sharp left curve and on both right curves. The gradual left curve was inadequate. The Tahoe therefore had one inadequate curved approach in addition to its inadequate right side on the straightaway.

Its fixed, non-adaptive lamps did not turn with the steering. The fair results show that the beam supplied a usable but limited margin on several curves; they should not be read as equivalent to a Good rating.
Glare
IIHS recorded excessive low-beam glare from the tested Tahoe. This is a separate issue from how far the lamps illuminate the road. A lamp can reach an acceptable distance and still direct too much light toward oncoming traffic, which is why the test reports both visibility and glare.
Why a Marginal-versus-Poor result matters
IIHS’s headlight ratings are associated with crash patterns at the population level. Its headlight overview reports that vehicles with Good-rated visibility had 19% fewer nighttime single-vehicle crashes and 23% fewer nighttime pedestrian crashes than vehicles with Poor-rated headlights in an IIHS analysis published in 2022 by Brumbelow.

Those percentages are not a measured difference between an Expedition and a Tahoe, and they do not provide an individual driver’s probability of a crash. They compare groups of vehicles with different headlight ratings. The useful takeaway is that the complete rating has safety relevance beyond styling or the presence of LEDs; the Expedition’s Marginal grade is a better position than the Tahoe’s Poor grade, but neither tested system reaches Good.
Night visibility also depends on speed, weather, road markings, windshield condition, driver vision and whether other vehicles are present. The IIHS result isolates the headlamp system under its standardized conditions, so it should be one input into a purchase decision rather than a promise about every nighttime drive.
LED, reflector and high-beam assist: what the labels do—and do not—tell you
LED does not equal better illumination
Both tested SUVs used LED reflector headlights. That tells you the light source and optical architecture, not the measured performance. The Tahoe’s Poor grade demonstrates why “LED” cannot substitute for an illumination and glare result.

Neither tested system was curve-adaptive
Neither the Expedition nor Tahoe configuration used curve-adaptive headlights. A fixed beam can still perform adequately on some bends, as the test descriptions show, but it cannot redirect the lamp toward a curve in the way an adaptive system can. Buyers who frequently drive unlit, winding roads should pay attention to the actual test pattern rather than assuming a large SUV’s size or LED equipment solves that problem.
High-beam assist is helpful but limited
Both vehicles had high-beam assist. The feature can switch between low and high beams when conditions permit, increasing forward light on dark roads without requiring constant manual operation. It does not repair an inadequate low-beam pattern, and it cannot remove glare when the high beam should be off. IIHS’s method gives credit for the feature, yet the Expedition remained Marginal and the Tahoe remained Poor.
Model-year and trim boundaries you should verify
The detailed evidence behind this comparison covers 2023–24 lighting configurations. Headlamps can vary by trim, package, production change and market, so the badge on the tailgate is not enough to identify the tested hardware.
- Confirm the model year. Do not apply the 2023–24 result automatically to a 2025 or 2026 vehicle.
- Confirm the trim and options. Ask whether the vehicle has the same LED reflector assembly and high-beam-assist equipment represented in the detailed IIHS page.
- Match the exact lamp assembly. Exterior styling can look similar while the internal optics differ. Use the vehicle’s equipment list or the manufacturer’s parts and specification information.
- Check the applicable IIHS entry. A current summary listing can show that a model is present without proving that every newer trim uses the same hardware or has the same detailed result.
- Inspect the vehicle in person. Look for condensation, damaged lenses, mismatched replacement lamps and obvious aim problems on a used SUV. Those conditions can change real-world performance even when the original test was sound.
If a salesperson cannot identify which headlamp assembly is installed, treat the detailed 2023–24 comparison as historical evidence rather than a confirmed rating for that particular vehicle.

The 2026 Tahoe owner’s manual describes IntelliBeam as a system that switches the high beams based on surrounding traffic. Automatic operation does not remove the driver’s responsibility to monitor the road and intervene when conditions demand it.

- Fog, snow, mist, smoke and road spray can scatter light back toward the driver.
- Airborne obstructions can make high beams create glare or obstruct the driver’s own vision.
- Traffic, reflective signs and road geometry can cause the system to change modes when the driver still needs to make a judgment.
Follow the vehicle-specific manual for activation and override instructions. If visibility is poor, manually select the beam that lets you see without dazzling others. The Tahoe manual warning is especially relevant when relying on an automatic feature in bad weather; it is not evidence that the 2026 Tahoe has the same detailed IIHS result as the 2023–24 tested configuration.

A directly comparable 2026 Expedition manual or headlight test was not established in the available material. Do not infer that its 2026 automatic-high-beam behavior, lamp hardware or IIHS grade matches the older Expedition entry.
Which SUV should different night drivers choose?
Choose the Expedition when the two vehicles are otherwise equal
If you are comparing the same model year and similarly equipped 2023–24 vehicles, the Expedition is the evidence-based choice for night visibility. It has the higher IIHS grade, good straight-road coverage on both sides and only some glare rather than excessive glare.
Do not treat the Expedition as a “Good” headlight system
The Expedition’s inadequate results on both right-hand curves are important for drivers who regularly travel winding roads, ramps or rural routes without street lighting. Its Marginal grade means the system still has measurable limitations.
Recommended Free Tools
Be cautious with a Tahoe selected for frequent dark-road driving
The Tahoe’s Poor result combines inadequate right-side straight-road coverage, an inadequate gradual-left curve and excessive glare. If you frequently drive at night, especially on unlit roads, those deficiencies deserve more weight than the fact that the lamps are LED and include high-beam assist.
Prioritize condition and equipment on used vehicles
On a used SUV, lens condition, lamp alignment and replacement parts can matter as much as the original specification. Have the headlamps checked if the vehicle has been in a collision, has a visibly damaged lens or illuminates one side differently from the other. A properly maintained example of the better-rated configuration is preferable to a neglected one, but maintenance cannot change the underlying beam design.
A practical inspection checklist before purchase
- Read the equipment sheet. Record the model year, trim, headlamp type and whether high-beam assist is installed.
- Match the IIHS configuration. Verify that the lamp assembly is the one covered by the detailed test, rather than assuming all trims share it.
- Inspect both lenses. Look for clouding, cracks, moisture or signs of a replacement unit.
- Check aim on level ground. Uneven aim can create glare and leave one side of the road dark. Use a qualified service department if the pattern appears abnormal; do not make an improvised adjustment.
- Test the controls safely. Confirm that low beams, high beams and the automatic function operate, and learn the manual override before driving at night.
- Consider your routes. Straight, lit suburban roads place different demands on headlights than dark, winding rural roads. The IIHS curve results are particularly relevant to the latter.
- Review the manual. Learn the warnings for fog, snow, spray, mist and smoke before relying on automatic high beams.
What this comparison cannot establish
There is no apples-to-apples detailed 2026 headlight test established here for the Expedition and Tahoe. The available detailed results describe older configurations, while the 2026 Tahoe manual documents feature operation rather than a new IIHS performance grade. A current-year summary is not enough to prove that every newer trim uses the same hardware.
The data also do not establish a driver’s personal crash risk, a guaranteed view distance in every weather condition or how either SUV feels on a particular road. They are controlled measurements of illumination and glare. Use them to compare equipment, then confirm the exact vehicle and maintain it correctly.

For the 2023–24 configurations tested by IIHS, the Ford Expedition has better night visibility than the Chevrolet Tahoe: Marginal versus Poor. The Expedition is the sensible pick when the vehicles are otherwise comparable, but its inadequate right-hand-curve performance means it is not a top-tier headlight system. The Tahoe’s inadequate right-side straightaway coverage, inadequate gradual-left curve and excessive glare make it the weaker choice for regular nighttime driving.
For any newer model year, verify the trim and headlamp assembly first. The rating belongs to the tested configuration, not automatically to every Expedition or Tahoe carrying the same model name.
