In the available U.S. gasoline-model-year data, the first-generation Ford Escape (2001–2007) ranks strongest overall, while the third generation (2013–2019) has the weakest broad run. This is a provisional ordering, not a statistical comparison of generation-wide failure rates: the available source ranks individual model years against compact SUVs from the same year, and it does not provide a directly comparable hybrid series. The year-by-year variation is substantial, so use the ranking to narrow your search—not to judge an individual Escape.
Ford Escape generations ranked by reliability
This article uses these model-year ranges: first generation, 2001–2007; second, 2008–2012; third, 2013–2019; and fourth, 2020–2025 for the scored years covered here. Other references use overlapping ranges around redesign years, so check the model year rather than relying on a generation label alone.
The ranking below synthesizes available model-year evidence. VehicleReliability.com compares each gasoline Escape with compact SUVs sold in the same model year, using NHTSA complaint reports weighted against U.S. sales volume, according to the publisher. A complaint is not necessarily a confirmed defect, and a relative class position is not a failure rate. Consumer Reports’ available summaries describe owner-survey results, but they are not interchangeable with the complaint-based ranking.

First generation (2001–2007): strongest provisional showing
Among the years covered by the gasoline ranking, 2007 is the strongest Escape year in its series: VehicleReliability.com places it seventh of 22 compact SUVs, in the 71st percentile. That supports a favorable view of the generation’s later years, not a guarantee for every first-generation vehicle. The source series does not cover 2001–2003, and Consumer Reports describes 2005 as about average against same-year vehicles.

Fourth generation (2020–2025 in the scored span): uneven, with a poor launch year
The 2020 Escape is the weakest year in VehicleReliability.com’s gasoline series, ranking 34th of 35 compact SUVs (3rd percentile). Consumer Reports’ available summary also describes 2020 as less reliable than same-year vehicles. Later years look better in the complaint-based series; for 2025, it reports 17th of 42 (61st percentile), while Consumer Reports describes the year as more reliable than same-year vehicles. These newer vehicles have had less time in service, so their apparent standing is less mature.
-
Second generation (2008–2012): uneven, with a strong 2012
The generation’s final year stands out positively: VehicleReliability.com ranks the 2012 Escape fifth of 18 compact SUVs (76th percentile). That result does not characterize the whole generation; the years immediately before it are weak in the same dataset. Compare the exact year and the individual vehicle’s records.

Third generation (2013–2019): weakest broad run in the available year rankings
Most scored years from 2013 through 2018 sit low against same-year compact SUVs in VehicleReliability.com’s table. The available evidence supports calling this the weakest broad run in that dataset, not claiming that every Escape from these years will fail. The source material does not establish which engine, trim, or individual vehicle has the lowest lifetime repair costs.
What the rankings can—and cannot—tell you
The year rankings are relative standings among compact SUVs sold in the same model year. For example, 34th of 35 means the 2020 Escape placed near the bottom of that comparison; it does not mean a particular percentage of 2020 Escapes will need repairs. VehicleReliability.com’s reported percentile and rank are its own published comparisons, not independently audited measurements.
Consumer Reports says its reliability history draws on a latest subscriber survey of about 380,000 vehicles and 20 potential trouble spots. Its available summaries broadly agree with the complaint-based series for 2020 and 2025, but the two sources use different evidence and should not be combined into a single score. The Consumer Reports pages were not directly accessible for this comparison, so component-specific conclusions are not established here.
Neither source settles hybrid reliability by generation. VehicleReliability.com has a separate hybrid series, but the gasoline table used for the year comparisons does not include it. Treat the ordering as applying to the available gasoline-model-year evidence, not as a ranking of every Escape powertrain.

How to assess a used Ford Escape
- Start with the exact year and powertrain. The sharp differences between years within the same generation mean a generation-wide label can conceal useful distinctions.
- Review service records and arrange an independent inspection. A population-level ranking cannot establish the condition of a specific car; have a qualified mechanic assess the candidate and its maintenance history.
- Check open recalls by VIN. Use the NHTSA recall lookup to see whether a particular vehicle has unrepaired recalls. NHTSA notes that newly announced recalls may not appear until affected VINs are identified, and its VIN results exclude recalls more than 15 years old unless the manufacturer offers broader coverage.
- Use an OBD-II reader only as a screening aid. A code scan can surface diagnostic information, but it cannot identify every problem, establish overall reliability, or replace an inspection. Ford’s 2013 Escape Owner’s Manual says the data-link connector is for diagnostic scan tools and cautions against unapproved aftermarket plug-in devices. Verify a reader’s compatibility and supported functions for the vehicle.
- Match the owner documentation to the car. Ford provides year-indexed owner manuals; use the manual for the exact model year.
