The Pickman is a small electric utility vehicle made by Chinese automaker Kaiyun Motors. It is better understood as an electric mini truck for on-site and other low-speed utility work than as a conventional full-size pickup intended for highway driving. NHTSA’s manufacturer record lists Kaiyun Motors and the Pickman, describing it as an “Electric mini truck for on-site use” and classifying it as both a low-speed vehicle and an off-road vehicle. Is the $8,950 Pickman for sale in the U.S. now?
There is no evidence in the current distributor information that $8,950 is the price of a currently available U.S. Pickman. Futurism reported on February 5, 2019, that Kaiyun planned to sell a road-legal version in the United States starting at $8,950. That was a launch-plan price, not a current quote. Futurism’s 2019 report also said the truck cost $5,700 in China at the time.
The distributor’s current general information page gives a U.S. price range of $12,000–$32,000, depending on model, battery, options, and order quantity. The seller says the range includes several transport and import cost categories to its dealer facility; it does not establish the final delivered amount for a particular buyer. A four-door passenger Pickman listing showed a $19,700 sale price against a $21,700 regular price, but was marked “Out of Stock” when reviewed. What did the 2019 announcement claim about price and performance?
Futurism’s 2019 article reported a planned U.S. starting price of $8,950 and advertised figures of 75 miles (120 km) of range, a 28 mph (45 km/h) top speed, and 1,100 pounds (500 kg) of cargo capacity. These are historical claims tied to the configuration discussed then; they are not independent test results or confirmed specifications for current models. The original report is the source for those figures.
Another contemporaneous report gave a different planned U.S. price. Xinhua said on January 29, 2019, that Kaiyun planned U.S. exports that year and reported a $5,000 U.S. price. The two reports therefore give different historical planned prices; neither establishes today’s price. Xinhua also reported that Kaiyun’s founder aimed to sell as many as 10,000 trucks, a stated target rather than evidence of realized U.S. sales. Xinhua’s 2019 report spells the founder’s name Wang Chao; Futurism spells it Wang Fao.
