Ford has not announced a restart date for the current-generation F-150 Lightning because it later said that production run had concluded. The “no exact date” statement was Ford’s position on November 7, 2025, during a production pause. In December, Ford announced a next-generation Lightning with an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) powertrain, but did not give its launch date.
What happened to F-150 Lightning production?
The status changed from a temporary pause to the end of the current-generation truck’s production. Ford’s November 2025 comment about restarting the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center described the situation at that time; it was not a schedule for resuming production.
| Date | Ford’s stated position | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| October 23, 2025 | Ford said Lightning assembly would remain paused while it prioritized gas and hybrid F-Series trucks. | The pause was tied to Ford’s production priorities and recovery from the Novelis plant fire. Ford said gas and hybrid trucks were more profitable and used less aluminum. Ford’s October 23 announcement also described a planned increase of more than 50,000 F-150 and F-Series Super Duty trucks in 2026. That was not a Lightning production target. |
| November 7, 2025 | A Ford spokesperson told Ars Technica that the company had good Lightning inventory and no exact date to bring the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center back up. | This was an attributed statement during the pause, not an announced restart date. Ars Technica’s November 7 report quoted the spokesperson. |
| December 15, 2025 | Ford said current-generation F-150 Lightning production had concluded. | The earlier pause no longer describes the current-generation truck’s production status. Ford’s December 15 strategy announcement and SEC filing document the decision. |
Is Ford bringing back the same Lightning?
Ford’s December announcement points to a different vehicle program, not a restart of current-generation battery-electric Lightning production. The company said it had concluded production of the current generation and announced a next-generation Lightning using an EREV architecture. Ford said the new vehicle would be assembled at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center, but did not provide a launch date in that announcement. Ford’s next-generation announcement described the plan.
| Vehicle | Powertrain and status | Timing announced in cited statements |
|---|---|---|
| Current-generation F-150 Lightning | Battery-electric pickup; Ford said production had concluded. | No restart date. Ford’s later statement was that production had concluded. |
| Next-generation Lightning | Ford-announced EREV architecture; planned assembly at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center. | No launch date provided in the December 15, 2025 announcement. |
What Ford has said about the next-generation EREV
Ford described the future truck as retaining electric power delivery while adding an onboard range-extending system. The company estimated a range of more than 700 miles and claimed sub-five-second acceleration. Those are Ford’s announced product claims, not independently verified test results. Ford’s announcement did not establish a delivery date or a production restart timetable for the current-generation Lightning. Ford’s EREV announcement contains the company’s description.

What buyers and owners should take from the change
- If you mean the current-generation battery-electric Lightning, Ford has not announced that it will restart its production; it said production had concluded.
- If you mean the next-generation EREV Lightning, Ford has announced the vehicle concept and production location, but its December 2025 announcement did not give a launch date.
- Ford’s earlier F-Series production increase referred to gas and hybrid F-150 and Super Duty trucks, not a planned Lightning output figure.
Ford’s plans and future specifications can change. The latest timing established by the cited announcements is that the next-generation Lightning’s launch date had not yet been provided.
