For an India-market used Ford EcoSport, choose the diesel when your driving is dominated by longer trips and you value its stronger low-speed torque; choose the 1.5-litre petrol when most journeys are urban or you need an automatic. That rule is only a starting point. The right purchase depends on the exact year and engine, gearbox, service records, present condition, annual distance, local fuel prices and any diesel-use restrictions where you live.
First, identify the exact EcoSport you are considering
“Petrol EcoSport” and “diesel EcoSport” do not describe one fixed specification. Engines, emissions versions and transmissions changed during the model’s life, and equipment varied by year and trim. The figures below apply to the India-market cars covered by the cited manufacturer releases and used-car guide; a car registered in another country can have different engines or ratings.

| Engine and period | Published output | Gearboxes reported | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.5-litre, three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol (facelift range from 2017) | 123 hp, 150 Nm | Five-speed manual or six-speed torque-converter automatic | Autocar India used-car guide description; verify the individual VIN and trim. |
| 1.0-litre, three-cylinder EcoBoost turbo-petrol (facelift range from 2017) | 125 hp, 170 Nm | Six-speed manual | Different engine from the 1.5-litre petrol; do not assume the same economy or maintenance profile. |
| 1.5-litre, four-cylinder diesel (facelift range from 2017) | 100 hp, 205 Nm | Five-speed manual | Autocar India guide figure; later BS VI releases quote 215 Nm. |
| 1.5-litre petrol Ti-VCT (2020 and 2021 releases) | 122 PS, 149 Nm | Five-speed manual or six-speed torque-converter automatic | Ford’s later specification; PS and hp are closely related but not identical units. |
| 1.5-litre TDCi diesel (2020 and 2021 releases) | 100 PS, 215 Nm | Five-speed manual | BS VI specification in Ford’s January 2020 announcement and 2021 lineup release. |
Ford’s November 2017 launch announcement quoted 123 PS and 150 Nm for the 1.5-litre petrol and 100 PS for the 1.5-litre TDCi diesel. Ford’s January 2020 announcement identified the BS VI petrol as 122 PS and 149 Nm and the diesel as 100 PS and 215 Nm. These small rating differences reflect the particular model-year specifications and measurement labels; they are not a reason to treat every petrol or diesel car as interchangeable.

Diesel: torque and distance-oriented use
The diesel’s published torque is higher than the naturally aspirated petrol’s, which helps when climbing, overtaking or carrying passengers on a long run. The used-car guide therefore presents it as the more natural fit for frequent intercity driving. It is a manual-only choice in the cited India lineups, so the driver must be comfortable operating a clutch in traffic.

Do not buy a diesel solely because a brochure says it can travel farther on a litre. A used diesel’s economy depends on maintenance, tyre pressures, traffic, load, driving style and the condition of its fuel, air and emission systems. A neglected example can erase the expected fuel saving through repairs.
1.5-litre petrol: the practical automatic option
The 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol was offered with a five-speed manual and a six-speed torque-converter automatic in the facelift range and in Ford’s later releases. That makes it the relevant powertrain for a buyer who wants two pedals, provided the exact year and trim actually have the automatic. Smooth, predictable response and easier stop-start driving can matter more in a city than a diesel’s extra torque.
1.0-litre EcoBoost: a separate petrol decision
The 1.0-litre EcoBoost is turbocharged, produces the highest quoted petrol torque in the used-car guide and uses a six-speed manual. Autocar’s guide says it can be sensitive to driving style and records owner complaints about poor fuel efficiency. Those comments are not a failure rate and do not prove that every EcoBoost is inefficient. They do mean that you should demand a clear service history, check how the car was driven and assess whether its previous use resembles yours.

What the published economy and maintenance numbers actually mean
| Figure | What it represents | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 17 km/l petrol | Ford India’s claimed figure for the 1.5-litre petrol at the November 2017 launch | Historical manufacturer claim, not a measured result for a used car. |
| 23 km/l diesel | Ford India’s claimed figure for the 1.5-litre TDCi diesel at the November 2017 launch | Historical manufacturer claim, not a guarantee in present traffic or on an older vehicle. |
| ₹21,754 petrol; ₹27,882 diesel | Figures attributed by Ford’s 2021 announcement to Autocar India’s 2020 Maintenance Report over 60,000 km or five years | Historical published comparison; not a current quote or a forecast for a particular car. |
The maintenance comparison is especially easy to misuse. It describes a defined five-year/60,000-km ownership cycle and is not an estimate of what a ten-year-old car with unknown history will cost. A single clutch, air-conditioning repair, sensor, turbo-related fault or transmission problem can outweigh routine-service averages.
Estimate your own fuel-cost difference
Use your own records or a conservative test rather than the launch claims. For each fuel, calculate:
Annual fuel cost = annual kilometres ÷ observed kilometres per litre × local price per litre.

This automotive diagnostic scanner is designed for wide vehicle coverage; please check compatibility with your vehicle before purchase
Then add an allowance for scheduled service and condition-related repairs. Keep petrol and diesel estimates separate, and use the actual engine and gearbox in the car you are inspecting. Because no current fuel prices, independent consumption test or present service quote is established here, any result you produce is an estimate, not a published break-even mileage. Include the cost of convenience: an automatic may be worth more to you in heavy traffic even if its fuel bill is not the lowest.
Which engine suits your route and annual distance?
Mostly city commuting
- Start with the 1.5-litre petrol if your trips are short, congested and frequent.
- Choose the automatic if clutch work is a major burden, but verify that shifts are smooth and that the transmission specification matches the registration year.
- Do not assume every petrol is the same: the 1.0 EcoBoost is manual-only in the cited range and has different service-history questions.
Frequent highways and intercity travel
- The diesel’s torque and the guide’s long-distance recommendation make it a logical candidate for regular highway kilometres.
- Confirm that the car’s condition, clutch and maintenance records support that choice; a tired diesel is not a bargain because of its theoretical economy.
- Check current local rules before buying an older diesel, since emissions requirements and access restrictions are location-specific and are not settled by the specifications above.
Mixed use
For a balanced city-and-highway pattern, compare two inspected cars on total expected cost and transmission preference rather than applying a universal kilometre cutoff. Use the same annual-distance assumption for both, price fuel locally, and obtain repair estimates for defects actually found. If the cars are similarly priced and maintained, your route mix and need for an automatic should decide more than a claimed mileage headline.
Inspection checklist for any used EcoSport
A professional pre-purchase inspection is sensible for an older used car. Arrange it before committing money, and provide the inspector with the VIN, service invoices and any warning lights observed. An optional OBD-II scanner can read some stored fault codes, but it cannot certify the engine, gearbox, body, safety systems or authenticity of the service history.

- Match the identity. Compare the VIN, registration documents, engine designation, model year and trim with the seller’s description. Confirm whether the car is the 1.5 petrol, 1.0 EcoBoost or diesel and whether it is manual or automatic.
- Review maintenance evidence. Look for dated invoices, odometer continuity, oil and filter work, cooling-system work, clutch replacement and any transmission or emission-system repairs. Missing paperwork is a risk to price into the decision, not a reason to assume perfect maintenance.
- Start the engine cold if possible. Note warning lamps, unusual smoke, unstable idle, extended cranking and noises. A warm engine at arrival can conceal a cold-start symptom, so ask how long it has been running.
- Test a manual clutch. Autocar’s used-car guide says the clutch pedal should not feel abnormally springy; that sensation can indicate a worn clutch plate. Check take-up, slipping under acceleration and engagement consistency, then obtain a repair estimate if anything feels wrong.
- Test an automatic thoroughly. Select every position, move off gently and accelerate through several shifts. The guide calls for smooth shifts without jerkiness. Delay, harsh engagement or repeated jolts require diagnosis before purchase.
- Evaluate the air conditioner. It should cool the cabin quickly and effectively. Some owners have complained of insufficient AC cooling, but that is a reported issue rather than a measured failure rate. Have a technician check the cause instead of accepting a vague promise that it only needs regassing.
- Drive on representative roads. Include slow traffic, a clear stretch and an incline if safe. Listen for driveline noise, check steering and braking, and see whether the engine and gearbox suit your normal route.
- Inspect the rest of the car. Look for accident repairs, uneven panel gaps, tyre wear, corrosion, fluid leaks, damaged wiring and warning lights. These checks are not substitutes for a lift inspection, but they can reveal conflicts with the seller’s account.
- Get a written condition report. Separate urgent safety repairs from routine future work. Use documented findings when negotiating, and walk away if the seller will not allow an independent inspection.
Transmission choice: manual diesel versus petrol automatic
| Question | Manual diesel | Petrol automatic |
|---|---|---|
| Availability in cited lineups | Five-speed manual | Six-speed torque-converter automatic on the 1.5-litre petrol |
| Best reason to choose it | Higher torque and frequent long-distance use | Two-pedal convenience in urban traffic |
| Main inspection focus | Clutch pedal feel, clutch slip and engagement | Shift smoothness, engagement delay and jerkiness |
| Key caveat | Diesel-only ownership may conflict with local rules or short-trip economics | Automatic availability is year- and trim-specific; verify the VIN |
The table is a decision aid, not a reliability ranking. A well-maintained manual petrol can be a better buy than a neglected diesel, and a smooth automatic is preferable to one with unexplained shift shocks regardless of fuel type.

2017-era facelift cars
The facelift range described by Autocar India introduced the three engine choices listed above. Ford’s launch announcement quoted the 1.5-litre petrol at 123 PS and 17 km/l claimed economy and the diesel at 100 PS and 23 km/l claimed economy. Confirm the build year, registration year and actual engine because a car advertised simply as a “2017 EcoSport” may have a different manufacturing or registration date.

2020 and 2021 BS VI cars
Ford’s January 2020 release identifies the 1.5-litre TDCi diesel as BS VI, with 100 PS and 215 Nm, and the 1.5-litre Ti-VCT petrol as 122 PS and 149 Nm. Ford’s 2021 lineup release repeats those outputs and transmission choices. These later cars may be attractive where emissions compliance matters, but confirm the registration documents and local rules rather than inferring compliance from an advertisement.

Warranty expectations
Ford stated a factory warranty of three years or 100,000 km for the 2020 lineup. Whether a used car still has coverage depends on its in-service date, mileage, transfer terms and any remaining eligibility. Do not value an old car as if the original warranty automatically follows it.
In Ford’s January 2020 release, executive director of Marketing, Sales & Service Vinay Raina described the warranty as “a testament of our continuous localization efforts and commitment to deliver an even greater value to our customers.” That is Ford’s statement about its warranty proposition, not an independent assessment; verify any surviving coverage with the relevant records.
A practical buying decision in six questions
- Where will the car spend most of its time? Mostly urban routes point you toward the 1.5 petrol, while regular long trips make the diesel more compelling.
- Do you require an automatic? If yes, concentrate on the 1.5 petrol automatic versions and verify the exact trim. The cited diesel versions are manual.
- How much verified maintenance history exists? Give priority to invoices and consistent mileage over a seller’s mileage claim.
- What did the inspection find? Price clutch, AC, gearbox and safety repairs before comparing fuel savings.
- What do local economics and rules say today? Use current fuel prices, realistic consumption and location-specific diesel restrictions. Historical figures cannot answer those questions.
- Would you still buy it if fuel savings disappeared? If the answer is no, the car may be too dependent on an uncertain economy calculation. Choose the example whose condition and usability you can defend.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the 17 and 23 km/l claims as promises. They are manufacturer claims from the 2017 launch, not independent measurements of an older car.
- Grouping all petrol engines together. The 1.5 naturally aspirated petrol and 1.0 EcoBoost have different outputs, transmissions and owner-reported considerations.
- Assuming diesel is always cheaper. The historical maintenance comparison actually reported higher diesel maintenance over its specified cycle, and condition can dominate fuel savings.
- Ignoring the gearbox. A smooth automatic or a healthy clutch materially changes daily usability and repair exposure.
- Treating an OBD-II scan as a certification. It is only a limited fault-code aid and cannot replace a mechanical inspection.
- Comparing cars without normalising use. Calculate both options with the same annual kilometres, local fuel prices and condition-adjusted repair allowance.
Verdict
Buy a diesel EcoSport when a documented, well-inspected example will spend much of its life on longer routes and its torque is useful to you. Buy the 1.5-litre petrol when urban driving dominates or an automatic is important. Treat the 1.0 EcoBoost as its own manual-only inspection case, not as a proxy for every petrol model. In every case, the exact year, VIN, maintenance evidence, clutch or automatic behaviour, AC performance, local rules and a professional inspection matter more than a brochure mileage number.
